Like skating videos, do u think videos will ever become mainly company produced with only riders sponsored by that company?.....it wouldnt be every company just mainly the bigger companies.

as the interest in the sport grows, and thus the sales of vids go up, then you will start to see more company-produced videos. there will still be a few independent companies, but not many will be able to match the spending power of the likes of salamon, k2, rossignol etc.

thats my 2 cents

the olsen twins are SO hot!!

The spending power of WHO?! The reason there are no company videos in skiing is beacuse none of the ski companies want to kick down the fundage or invest the time to produce a full fledge team ski movie. They get way more bang for their buck by giving a production company X amount, which is usualy pretty miniscule in comparison to the overall costs associated with producing a full fledge 16mm ski flick. (cause if it aint a 16mm film the fucking bitch nugget ski industry says automaticaly the video is a piece of shit.)

The reason there are so many skate team videos is the fact that there is damn near zero cost involved to make them. Just round up your team and a couple digi cams, hop in a van, drive to the nearest suburban area and destroy shit.

jibtech has it right...so much easier to set up a skate vidoe then a ski one

Clearly there is more money being thrown around to make snowboard video and it hasn't happened there. With awesome companies like MSP having like 20 riders in a 1 hour movie why would you want to limit it to only one team where there are only like 5-10 guys. Also you end up with something like 1242 that doesn't have a good mix of freestyle and freeride.

I'd take high end digi (professional tapes, professional cam) over 16mm with cheap film anyday. Not to mention if the person with the 16mm cam doesn't know what they're doing, what's the point? That's why I hate stereotyping like that, like how people judge the quality of something on the equipment.

Skate vids and stuff have a lot of low-quality footage yet it still makes it into the vids, whereas with skiing people will diss it because it's not up to standards. And yeah... there was an entire motion picture film filmed with Digital Cams. They bought like 20 $4,500 cameras and got all creative with angles and white balance.

you can make it look almost (almost not really though) like film with some of the new digi cams, but if I actualy had a budget to use 16 mil i would. it is so much easier to shoot film than it is digi.

I like digi a lot better, its more crisp and lifelike almost, it seems to pull me into the film more

Levin is completely right

no ski company is gonna put a large enough chunk of cash on the table to produce a team video, save for OAKLEY who is such a large comporation (last time i knew, they were still in the list of 'Fortune 500' companies).

Until the ski industry gets bigger, and funds projects that arent 16mm (should happen soon, with the advent of high def and 24p cameras in a reasonable price range), you get the 'mixed team'' videos

Film is only easier to shoot if you have a good telecine and you can spend the money on a multi-light session. If you can only afford one-light telecine sessions from shitty companies then you better nail your exposures or you are fucked. Also, You better have steady hands, because every shake shows up on film, unlike digi which has asteadying device, alleviating some jiggling in the camera movement. Loading film can be a bisnatch and you don't know what your shots look like until they are transferred. But if you have the money, yeah I guess certain aspects of shooting film are easier. Though I'd say for the most part digi is easier to shoot. Levin? You wanna weigh in on this one? You've shot a lot of both.

'buddy. honestly. longer skis. ill buy you some extentions for easter.' -Mommy, to stevexs2

i wouldnt say shooting 16 is in any way EASIER then digi. Loading film is a bitch, not being able to just SHOOT WHATEVER U WANT because of the cost of 16 is a bitch, paying for stock and telecine is a bitch, having to meter every shot for light is a bitch, not knowing if you even GOT the shot is a bitch

the only thing better about 16 is the quality, other then that, id consider it HARDER to work in then digital

Hibachi King drops 9/9/04...and it shouldnt suck! hah

I'm talking about getting a better shot. if you are a good filmer then it should be easier. there are so many more things that one must do on a digi to get a useable shot, in my opinion. I don't care what the light is like if you can meter then the shot will be better than digi.

^ of course its a given to get a better shot on 16mm. my point was that unless you are well versed in shooting 16mm, your going to obtain a BETTER show with a digi instead of trying your hand at 16. I completely agree that if i used my 16mm camera all winter, my shots would be better then with my digital

Hibachi King drops 9/9/04...and it shouldnt suck! hah

film should be obsolete for ski film makers... but its not. Whats the point in spending so much money for 16 when you can spend the same amount and get like 10 panasonic agdvx100 or whatever the fuck its called and have the shots be pretty much the same qaulity... PLus with final cut you can color correct like a mad man and add that grain film noise bullshit that makes film look a little softer...

I think some people are too attached with the words 16mm ski film on their box when really you shouldnt give a fuck about that. Companies should start caring about how there video isnt some Direct Copy of what they did last year just with updated footage.

^ very true...i have the ag100a, and its a sick camera. but professionals still mostly use 16mm, cause no matter what, it gets taken more seriously and gets more sponsor dollars then digi
