Style vs. Technical difficulty

Which do you think is better?

These days, people are throwing riskyflips, venus fly traps, d-spin 1260's, misty 5'000s (or wherever we are at, and 1440's.

Freestyle was spawned when people grew tired of aerial skiing and such - where no style exists, all the riders look the exact same. If you come out of a tight form to do your own style you will get marked down.

Freeskiing seems to be going in the direction of this. I don't believe that judges are giving proper credit to style as they are to technical hucks.

We need more judges who are riders, who pay proper respect to the person's style and fluidity in the air.

We are the future, we control where this goes.

Do you consider a huge hucked trick greater than that of a slow, tweaked-out grab with a spin?

As much as I like the pros that throw big tricks, I love the style and control riders like J.P. Auclair have.

Yeah style is really important, but going big is too. Some pros are getting to the point where they can make these huge tricks look stylish, so it sort of a give and take thing.

i think you have to look at it from more of a progression standpoint. Look at Jon Olson and CR Jhonson. Jon's switch misty 1080 reverse mute is a big trick. People say that a 1080 looks stupid and not stylie, however if you look at the tricks of today, there is a strong emphisis on style.

I think that people that worry about style too much just cant keep up with the progression. The kids that say that CR's bio 1260 has no style, are just jealous because they cant do it. Now i agree that a 1260, straight up, no grab, and just spinning a shitload has little style, however throw a reverse mute grab in it and the style is there.

I think judges are looking at style very much so, but you have to step back and see what the overall goal of the judges is. To score higher the more difficult trick. Im going to use the finals of the US Open Big Air as an example.

a bio 1260 reverse mute, or a switch rodeo 9. Which is a harder trick. break them down

first, the bio 1260

forward takeoff-0

off axis spin-1

1260 degress of rotation-1

reverse mute grab-1

fakie landing-1

that is a badass trick.

switch rodeo

fakie takeoff-1

inverted-0

900 degrees of rotation-0

tail grab-0

forward landing-0

the 1 and 0s next to the element of the trick dicifers more difficulty (this is an opinion and cannot be deemed fact). As you see the bio 1260 thogh deemed less stylie has much more difficult elements than the switch rodeo 9.

i hope im getting my point across that i believe that syle and biog tricks are essential, not just style.

sorry, but a 720 tail grab is much better than a 360 mute with a shitload of style.

The future of our sport is big tricks, with style.

its an essance of the both, to be the best you have to go big with style, unless its so hard that you dont have a choice about what you do in the air......

yeah i agree...the tricks are going to keep getting bigger as long as people can keep landing them....the style part will progress naturally, just how it has for years passed

1st off:

I know many of will disagree and complain but whatever

Aerailist do have there own style such, Eric Bergoust takes of in a pre-set tilt which is different from about 90% of other aerailist take offs,

As far as Aerails goes, Yes it's restrictive, and can be very boring, but it's a disipline.

Newschool isn't much diffrent especially when People progress there tricks to the point where there doing switch 1080's... The Scrabs do big hucks look where it's gotten them....

To bring it back to the point of style, Dave Crighton throws switch 1080's that look as smooth as butter, yet it's a huge trick, (thats' the PROgression)

But then An inverted half-cab 180 can look way doper off the same hit, as long as it's smooth.

style=smoothness

it is all subjective. what is style to me is ugly to you. what music i like is crap to you. what tricks i like you hate. it is all subjective. judging can never be consistent, because people are different. it is ridiculous to STATE what is 'stylish'. we can all say what we THINK is stylish but there is no way to judge it because it comes down to personal opinion. Well, I shouldn't say that it can't be judged, it most definetly can, and is, but not accurately in my eyes. i see things different than you, and you see things different than i. please flame me all you want over this rant.

I just look at difficulty. it's a good trick if it's hard, style is hard, sticking huge spins/flips is hard. it's just a mix of the two.

i think that they are both vary important, but style will always come out in the end. of coarse id rather see a nice switch 5 grab then a sketchy 1080, but id rather see the 1080 then some 'stylie' 180 grab.. i think that some skiers r just making it as an excuse. like he'll say 'oh his 900 was such crap but my 360 has more style to it'

You guys all made some good points.

So style and technical tricks come together,

without the style the trick is dull,

and without the trick the style is also.

if a 1080 was thrown over a huge distance, cool, but hucked on a QP at SnowJam? no thanks, I suck shit, I'm a terrible skier, I won't front, I will never in my life throw a 1080, I am not good enough to. I'd still rather see a big floaty 3 0r 5 than a 1080. Just my preference. but this is just my opinion, huck on brothers....

THINK ABOUT THIS: currently the individualistic style of skiers is still very fresh. But as I watch more ski vids I see our "individual" styles while skiing trending towards each other. How long before we are back in the same situation where we all look the same again? All of us skiing with the same "progressive newschool" style?

Nice bump... I honestly think I remember reading this in '02.... but in any case, still a very relevant thread. But I'm not worried. Bobby Brown won't be filming with Nimbus any time soon and they won't be rocking out with Seth or Daron Rahlves or the likes. Things will keep changing, skiing will still be awesome... either way, I'm not about to try any triple corks. Hopefully we just keep getting plenty of pow days. And besides, snowboarding may be losing share to skiing, but it's still a big deal and has a 10 year lead on 'newschool'

except now switch 10s are steezy and dubs are hucked. makes me wonder if 8 years from now dubs will be acceptable and steezy and trips will be the new hucked trick

its bound to happen to some extent. it used to be all about steezy 9's and people hating on hucked doubles. now its still steezy 9's, steezy doubles, and hating on hucked triples. i'd make an estimate on where it would stop, but my mind was blown like 3 years ago, im done making guesses.

i remember someone found a thread discussing if spins over a 12 were even feasible in like 01 or 02. haha if only they could have seen TJ at Xgames this year. dub 16...

but seriously 5 years ago, these boards looked exactly the same, just replace doubles with switch 10's.

exactly, and in 15 years from now we're gonna be replacing doubles with something else. its just too hard to try to guess what's gonna be the typical banger by then.

haha, blast from the past. It's crazy how some things never change. 15 years later, people are still having the same debate.. Style vs tech?

Pretty much called it. Dubs are mandatory these days

Threads to check back in, in another 7 years when triples are the new steezy trick and quads are the hucked trick in all comps.

That's some prophetic shit right there.

However no one could predict that flopping over knuckles and rolling on the ground in adidas track pants and jacket while still calling it skiing would be the answer to "hucked" tricks

haha. its basically a dub 10. d spin 7 to backflip

Mhhmhmm does sound risky. I like the classic old school trick names before it got standardized to the axis/degree/grab formula. This is less confusing though.
