and its a fucking dirt movie. I just got my copy in the mail today and threw it in. I have to say its probably the best am movie i have ever seen, the pow segment is rediculous. Props to Montage
honestly I wasn't impressed much at all. the editing was so boring, with the exception of the weezy song the music was boring as hell too. the skiing was definitely amazing, but shaky follow cams, boring editing, and lack of lifestyle shots, idk I just had much much much higher expectations for it after all these people saying it was going to be unreal.
i don't consider a movie to be "good" just because it has some nice skiing. it's the music, the filming, the style of editing, the mood, the filler lifestyle shots, all that shit.
i see what you mean there are a few shaky follow cams at the begining, and there is a really akward gap between segments, but i really enjoyed it, skiing was dirt, not just park big mt too, music i thought fit really well, but yeah 7 month wait was not sick, everyone who pre ordered should get a discount on next years filmÂ
so if the video was tom wallisch and jon brogan raping every feature imaginable for a half hour, but the editing was set up to be a flashing strobe that gave you epileptic seizures every 5 seconds, would it be okay because the skiing was good?
editing matters just as much, if not more, than skiing does.

I think they are absolutely necessary. I don't exactly mean "artsy" shots, just filler shots.. it gets real boring ski clip after ski clip.. you need progression.. footage that goes with the music. i'm not trying to hate on montage but i think i'd just like to see a more "well rounded" movie, the skiing was dope but it lacked so much.
Seriously, watch any top rated video on here, with a few exceptions, and notice how the film. The JOSS submissions all have lifestyle shots that build up to the skiing. You can't make a good, presentable video without the addition of outside material. It might just be eye candy, but its what keeps most people entertained, considering most people dont really appreciate most of the skiing in most of the new movies these days. I for one do enjoy watching a good skier throw down, but it just wouldn't be the same without some sort of innovative filming or editing.
its not done in your normal rider segment style movie, its more location, like park bc summer urban ect. But yeah garrett kills it along with everyone else, alot of the shit garrett was doing onto rail was real creative and looked so sick
The skiing could be amazing but if its edited bad then I could care less about it, I can't sit through something that looks like it put together in a day if its going to be an actual movie that im buying. I havn't seen it though, thats just my 2 cents
100% agree....havent seen this movie yet, hope too, but ski movies are still movies, which is a big production...imagine calling a hollywood movie good just because of the acting...while the editing music, and filming sucked, that would be dumb.
Even if its good skiing, if its not edited good it just sucks to watch. I think the problem is you've never seen a good skier that hasn't had their shots edited well. Its not very common but ive seen it before, sick skiing but the editing just made me want to puke and i had to stop.
Glad they finally got it out the door, I'm stoked to see it.
I probably shouldn't be commenting because I haven't watched it yet, but I'll just say that the editing in The Background was probably not what a lot of people would consider "good," but it was real, it was unique, it had its own flavor, and it captured the good feeling of skiing. that's what I expect from montage's montages.
are you fucking serious??? not enough LIFESTYLE shots??
lifestyle shots are gay, just how many shots do you want to see of somebody hiking a feature?? i can see one or two being useful in a segment but no more then that.. and while we're on the topic of gay shit.. fuck giving speeches about your love for skiing, etc. at the beggining of edits/movie segments too..
A few of the Rastafarides come to mind... It just sounds like background music, like someone happened to have reggae playing while they made them and whatever they were listening to was the soundtrack for the movies. Still want to see this, though...
sure but I cut up that packaging case that it came in, I could def hook it up for $15.. it was real funny walking around my kitchen real high looking for food.. find an envelope from MONTAGE INC, got so excited.. went to go watch asap and stugged to get off the plastic for like 5 minutes getting real frusterated, just said fuck it and cut it in half with scissors.
but I still stand behind my point on having no lifestyle shots. I'm just not into how it was ski shot after ski shot etc, need to mix it up with some kind of development, shots to go with the music.. shit like that. and I also thought the techno-ish beats got real boring after a while, each segment was like 4 mins.
The editing isn't bad, it's cut to the music and isn't hard to watch. I can't watch vids that aren't edited well, it just pisses me off. It's just no trickery. Just simple, skiing shots, nothing complicated. I like it.
anyone hating on this movie is a fool. go watch your million dollar budget MSP movies. I'll sit here and enjoy the fuck out of movies like this that are skiing at it's purest. These are people out there doing this for the love of it and killing it hard the whole time. A+ in my book.
you sound like an idiot, "im not into how it was ski shot after ski shot" if you dont like that then i dont really understand why u buy ski movies. I personally hate alot of the extra shit ppl put in movies
so what if level 1 stopped really editing their movies and just cutting shots to the music? that wouldnt matter right? cause editing doesnt matter? ofr real guys you need to realize that just because there is good skiing in a movie doesnt make it a good movie. I am not saying The F in Life was bad im just saying that everyone in here that says editing doesnt matter needs to think a little harder about that. would you pay the $30 for a pro movie if it wasnt edited well? maybe but then you would all get on here and complain about how bad it was and how you want your money back.
i stand by my statement. people using extreme examples like editing to flash strobes are retarted. i feel like its pretty stupid saying the skiing is amazing but the editing is mediocre so i didn't like the movie. i guess thats your personal opinion but for me unless the editing is fucking like ATROCIOUS i'm not going to be crying about it, personally i think your just bitter that the movie took 7 months to get to you so your sippin on some biased haterade.
Would you pay 30 bucks for a movie of stock shots with pros riding, with absolutely NO editing, just clip after clip after clip? Would you really enjoy watching that?
exactly.
Skiing is as much of an artform as it is a sport, and you guys need to remember that. It is a combination of both that makes a good movie.
Is this a fucking pro movie with a pro budget you're paying $30 for? No. You're a moron if you compare that.
The same guys that are skiing in the video are the same guys that are filming and editing this thing. There isn't some dude that's paid to stand there and do nothing but film all day with his expensive ass equipment. There aren't dollies and $10,000 HD cameras. Some dude wasn't paid to sit on his computer all day and edit this shit. They aren't trying to turn a dime. Show some respect for guys that just flat out fucking love skiing and put this together to share it.
