The Evolution of Newschoolers: Past & Future

I'm going to keep this as simple and concise as possible.

The more senior members of this website can often be found reminiscing about the good old days on Newschoolers dot com, when it was a tight knit community, and trash talking was unheard of and unwelcome.

Unfortunately, these days things have changed.

I am going to safely assume that the average age of the website was much higher back then, than it is now. Now, nobody can deny we’ve seen an influx of a new generation of skiers. While this new generation is our future and essential to our sport, it seems that the state of this website has degenerated quite a bit since its infancy.

So here is my question for you.

Do you think as the average age of the NS population increases, things will drift back to the way they were in the earlier days of this site?

Or, on the other hand, do you think that as our sport’s popularity continues to rise at a rapid rate, there will be no shortage of young punks coming up, and things will just get worse?

Hmm... Seems we have a paradox here. Can't really say for sure, except for, yes...

dave i would say you will always have punk... i mean you have em in any sport young and old... jibbing will always be younger age but i would assume it would even out over time and be like a bellshaped curve... but this is online.

Nothing online ever makes sense AJ.

I guess what I was trying to summarize when I said punk was the animosity that seems to exist on this site at times.

Maybe that's a little more clear?

Just a thought: You may notice that the 'bad' members are, in fact, louder and more noticeable than the good ones, generally speaking and not always. Accepting that as a general rule, it would make sense that a smaller site with the same proportion of idiots (say, 25%, to be generous), would have less stupidity abound than a larger site with the same proportion. As the site population increases, the quiter, 'good' members are more easily overcome by louder, 'bad' members. Thoughts?

Oh, and if you're hoping the core membership of this site will improve with age, I should point out that MikeE is at least 6 years younger than Dloc... not a good sign.

Then babies will come onto this site whining about their hot milk. Then we will get to people that are like, -5 years old. Which means we will be shut down for indecent exposure.

Its getting worse. When I first started, there was no such thing as posers on skis... Now there's almost as many as on snowboards.

I think that the maturity of this site will increase with age, and that our next genereration will be much smaller than the present one, considering the cancelation of our prime media, freeze, so the spread will be diminished to word of mouth.

There is hope. If you go by the 'newschoolers ratio' then 1 out of every 100 posts will be worth it. However, there does seem to be evidence that this ratio might change because ski season is knocking on the door and most people will only start posting intermittently. Maybe this will weed out some of those 'bad' users. I mean I'll only be posting every now and then, so it's gotta get better right?

Cocky wanna be funny people like spam man are annoying. I must say this site has taken a turn for the worse.

I must add my two cents to this post. I'm only 23, but I've been an NSer since the 'good old days', and have been working in the ski industry for the past 8 years.

I'd say the most frustrating thing has to be the focus on image now that has been brought into our sport. As a kid my hero was Glen Plake, who had an extremly flamboyant personality, but the focus was on skiing, not the skiis themselves, or his jacket, or his pants, etc.

Blizzard of Ahh's was my first ever ski flick, and it was 100 percent sick skiing, there were no guys flashing gangster signs, no trash talking, no thuggery, and there wasn't one close up of a logo on a ski boot or a helmet covered in logos. They didn't even wear helmets back then!

I guess what ticks me off the most about this site now is kids on here who post all these 'lifestyle shots' but never post any of them in action. It really isn't cool to wear your ski gear in your living room if you cant rip it outside.

The other issue that ticks me off is a lack of respect for other skiiers, kids on here who spend all their time in the park, can't carve a turn, and come on here bashing Jeremy Nobis cuz he skiis big mountain instead of the park. Lately I find I have been riding with boarders becuase many of the kids on skiis now have so much attitude that I am ashamed to be a skiier.

But hey, skiing is cool again and posers come with the territory. On the bright side, the industry is booming now and the quality of ski gear had improved exponentially in the past 10 years, along with a drastic reduction in prices. Whether a kid rides his skiis or not, hes still a consumer, and that means he's good for the industry.

WE TAKE THESE RISKS NOT TO ESCAPE LIFE, BUT SO THAT LIFE DOES NOT ESCAPE US

I do agree with you CanadianSkibum, but I'd like to take your point a little bit further. I was talking to a friend the other day and I was talking about how I saw a video clip of Bode Miller droppin' a 40ft cliff in Alaska and straightlining the rest of the run. I was impressed to say the least. I did some research and found out that Daron Ravhles (sp?) is also a super good big mtn skier. The same is true with almost all the US Ski Team members. While I agree that FIS isn't the best judging organization, it's weird that people dog on them. It's skiing and I'll support skiers, and I think it's awesome to see stuff that makes you look at things differently. I dunno, I just think that racers get a bad rep for that they do, even if it is a means to do something else with their skiing.
