The Dragons Lair

'it could make the big bang theory enept, but it could also say that gravity is getting stronger from some unknown source pulling us closer together.'

It is actually really strange, but the farther the galaxy is away from us, the faster it is receding. Its not like we are being thrown into some abyss, or closer together. The space inbetween things is getting larger. Is kind of a weird concept.

yeah it is, the space time continuem is very weird, its almost too complex for the human mind.

What I find amusing is that for every one of you who have answered the question about history repeating itself, you've only discussed the history of the modern Homo sapien. You should remember that the rest of history including pre-humans is not exempt from the question... Consider the Ice Age, Stone Age, etc. How many have we had? Anybody seen The Time Machine? But yeah, the question isn't specifically about wars, political leaders, etc. It's a pretty broad question, so keep your mind open and think a bit before answering.

''Skiing's unique from other sports. I think the biggest thing that I like most about it is that you're doin' it for yourself... You're not out on a team, you know. You can add your own style to any aspect of it, and you can ski things how you want... You can move at your own pace... And, you just, you have a lot of time sort of to yourself to be skiin', and that's... That's a lot of fun.''

I'd join, but i generally can't be arsed with intelligent discussion on the internet. Thats what college is for. The internet is for porn, free music and ns.com

the ice age and the stone age were modern homo sapiens. i guess there were homo sapien neandetalensis in the ice age too... but generally speaking you have to go back more than 500 k years to get before humans as we know them now... and homo habilis and the other homo species didnt really have a recorded culture, so thats really hard to take into account.

We've been getting a few very good responses recently. Don't be afraid to make them a bit drawn-out, people always seem to be apologizing for being longwinded, but don't worry, someone will read them (me at least), and we'd rather see that you have something to say. So don't be afraid to write as much as you want.

yes but we do not know that history before man was like what the scientists say it was, history that mankind has written down or told from generation to generation is verifable to some extent, and scientists could be wrong, as history has shown us, people who were experts were completely wrong about certain things, especially medicine, so we really cannot use time before man to prove or disprove that statement, because history is mostly fact, and we have no eyewitness accounts of time before man obviously, so we really cannot prove that what supposedly happened happened

History is mostly fact? History is our best guess in almost every instance. We try to weed out the exaggerations and fabrications of historians, piece together our estimates from contemporary art, legal decisions and royal writs. Very little of it is fact. As Wilde says, the same fantasies posing as fact lie (no pun intended) 'in the works of Herodotus, who, in spite of the shallow and ungenerous attempts of modern sciolists to verify his history, may justly be called the 'Father of Lies '; in the published speeches of Cicero and the biographies of Suetonius; in Tacitus at his best; in Pliny's Natural History in Hanno's Periplus; in all the early chronicles; in the Lives of the Saints; in Froissart and Sir Thomas Mallory; in the travels of Marco Polo; in Olaus Magnus, and Aldrovandus, and Conrad Lycosthenes, with his magnificent Prodigiorum et Ostentorum Chronicon; in the autobiography of Benvenuto Cellini; in the memoirs of Casanuova; in Defoe's History of the Plague; in Boswell's Life of Johnson; in Napoleon's despatches, and in the works of our own Carlyle, whose French Revolution is one of the most fascinating historical novels ever written, facts are either kept in their proper subordinate position, or else entirely excluded on the general ground of dulness.

yeah nice job listing books, but just because some famous authors have fiction ingrained in their books because of bias or other reasons, it doesnt mean that we have attained a general understanding of most historical occurences up to around 3000 years ago, these understandings dont necesarily come from famous authors, they come from actual evidence that we have found fromt those periods, be it journals, other writings, roman curse tablets and graves, most of pompeii, rgyptian writings, and the many other things that actualy historians use to piece together evidence of what happened during a time period, famous authors are famous because their books were interesting and extrememly well written, all of our history does not come from them, because they needed to inlude fiction to make their books interesting in some instances, but because we have other ways of discerning what happened in the past, it is safe to say that most history is fact, most likely, nothing that has been generally agreed upon has not occured, but in science theories are being disproven that have been accepted for years, and what occured before humans, like ice ages and other events of that type, are really more scientific than historical, because science does have patterns and things follow rules, unlike history who is influenced by people, who are unpredictable and follow no rules

^Yes, you are of course right, and if you read carefully, I mention many of those sources near the beginning of that post. History is an estimate of what happened, of the cultural climate, and so on, based on a number of diffferent sources of information. We look at different reports and decide what is most likely. That certainly doesn't sound like hard fact to me.

yeah all of history is not hard fact, but most of it is a soft fact, i just made that up, its generally agreed upon, but the intricacies are argued about, like we know who won which war and who assasinated who in roman times, but people argue about the parties involved and whatnot

Some people. I think that history can repeat it self, but in coincidence. Though there have been more than one ice age, and supposidly we are still in one, there has not been a repeat of other catastrophic events.

thank you guys for your interest in the cult. New users have been invited. We only invited a few. It was a hard decision, and if you were not invited do not take it personal at all. We simply were looking for users that we felt could contribute the most.
