The Do Nots of Edit Making

this thread is fucking gay

outb4 people lose all creativity because nsers think all edits have to be the same

No dubstep.

No film burn.

No twixtor.

No ridiculous grading. (aka blown out snow, blown out color, fake vignette, etc)

thats my main 4 that turn me off hard from edits. film burns can be okay in some situations, but 99% of the time people use them too much. same thing with twixtor, but again, 99% of people don't now how to use it.

for the record, i am guilt of this in the past. i know someone will try to cal me out.

re-using a song from a well know/popular edit/movie part, come on use your brain and pick something original

ITT: haters
think of it this way, it's a personal creative process and practicing it/getting it wrong is part of the process in getting it right.
my .02, it's art. as corny as that sounds, and just because everybody else is doing it one way doesn't mean you have to.

Meh, like Heath there are things that really bust my balls when people do certain things in edits (dubstep, film burn transitions every other clip, etc.). But there are no "Do Not's" of filming. Filming is an art, so therefore there are no real rules.

More things that bug me:

DSLR follows w/o rig or stabilizer

People asking for feedback, then arguing

Lame rap (i.e. Rick Ross)

The "skateperception" look

Grainy footage

edits with 100% dolly shots

People that try to pan while using a dolly

The list goes on and on...

well put. i could go on but like you said, it is an art and it's not my place to tell you, well anything. be creative and do your own thing

i know that it obviously doesnt look as good without one but you can still film without a stabilizer and make it look decent

I agree. But I will argue to the death that there is such a thing as "bad" art. Calling something "art" doesn't exempt you from standard aesthetic criteria, nor does it justify ill conceived or poorly executed work. I'm not saying people should do everything the same way (there's too much of that already), I'm just saying you should have a valid reason behind what you're doing other than "it looks cool."

I think my absolute biggest pet peeve is when the skier stays in the middle of the frame. If you're shooting wide from the knuckle of a table for instance, the skier should take off the jump on the left side of the frame, and land on the right side of the frame (and vice versa). Don't keep them in the middle! It's called "dead" center for a reason. It's completely uninteresting.

-Glidecam shots are a novelty at best, but they mute important compositional elements that you can otherwise get using nothing more than a tripod.

-Warm colors in flat light = disgusting. Why are people so afraid of cold colors even when the atmosphere calls for it? Blue is beautiful.

this is something i did in 2010, and yes, EVERYTHING is wrong with this clip (colors, twixtor, ect)

but here is an example of what not to do, and there is much worse out there i tell ya

Why not??? You can get some beautiful results panning while using a dolly. It may look bad when it's not properly executed, but it certainly isn't something you shouldn't do. I was on a shoot last week where this was our main shot. We would dolly either left or right while keeping the same framing, which gave it a "3d" feel. Now we were using a $6,000 tripod system which made it fairly easy to do, but it is still very possible for your average person on ns to achieve this type of shot with a budget tripod on a pvc dolly.

I would like to know this as well. Panning dolly shots are a pretty standard maneuver. They look great when done in a subtle fashion.

note the "known/popular" qualifier.

If the person is new and the edit in question is 3-4 years old, then yeah they might have a valid excuse for not having seen it. But songs like "Coastin", "Cracks", "Crimewave", and pretty much anything by meth and red or biggie have all been used, usually multiple times.

i was just in someone's edit that used Sail, aw man.. i love that song though.

cut out most of the ride-in before the feature's approach, nobody wants to watch you ski in a straight line for 30 seconds before and after every trick, keep the edit moving, changing, interesting.
