The Current State Of Popular Music....

Nobody is forcing you to listen to what is popular. Listen to whatever you like and stop worrying about what others choose to listen to.

Also, its pretty common knowledge that most popular songs sound similar because they use 4 chords.

Popular music has been watered down for years. Just look at Parlor songs (piano song sheet music that was bought and played at home by the consumer). It was dumbed down so that non-musicians could enjoy it. This isn't something new. Every generation complains about their popular music.

For example, the song "Calendar Girl" from the 60's made in to #4 and was heavily criticized by everyone at the time. You can't blame pop artists, they just make what a huge number of people apparently want. If pop music was so terrible no one would buy it and therefore it wouldn't be popular. Obviously marketing comes into play (such as boybands of the 90's) but the music machine just feeds us what we will eat.

i think people like ke$ha know their music is absolute shit but it makes them money

nobody ever said pop music was good, it's just a good business

I wasn't complaining. I thought it was funny.

Also, in that video, listen to THEIR version of the songs, then listen to the actual song. They sound really different, eh?

A group of kids did that act for the talent show, and while it is funny, most music is NOT actually made of the same 4 chords. I play piano, and the songs that I can play on that video stick out as weird and unfitting. Case in point: when he plays apologize, those chords are nowhere close to the chords the actual song contains.

RAHHHHHHH ANGRY.

I'm kind of sick of all the bitching about music. Our generation has access to *and I'm not kidding* MILLIONS times of more material than all the other past generations combined. Most of us don't even pay for most of our music anymore. But I'm not going to rant about that now.

Sure there is lots of shit, I can't listen to the radio anymore. But alternatively the internet has allowed us to emerge ourselves in more media than our grandparents couldn't EVEN IMAGINE when they were our age.
We live in a time when ANYONE can make it, Owl City, Soulja boy, they all came up on there own. That's pretty cool, even if their music isn't the greatest.
And don't even get me started on mashups and remixes. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? They are the coolest thing. Think about it, anyone can share, collaborate, and make something better than the original. And then share it with the freakin world!
Sure there is a lot of shit, but that's a product of having access to the largest collection of media in the history of the planet. I'm glad music is where it's at. I like the change.

hahaha I don't think they do. I know so many girls that listen to that shit religiously, and live by the lyrics, it's fucked. "Music is my, like, life!"

I hate her but in her defense she has a ridiculous musical resume. IT was said earlier in the thread that its just business and it makes them money. But its people like the jonas brothers that really get to me. Their fans are little girls who get caught by a melody and dont know that they are being used by shitty musicians. but whatever, i cant really listen to the radio anymore without getting angry
