The Cost of Progression

As we all are very aware of, the past two seasons have resulted in many tragic incidents/deaths of very talented and very unlikely people. As we all have asked ourselves, "why skiing?" or, "is progression worth it?" I have come to inform you that this is starting to occur in another sport that is also progressing. The sport I'm talking about is that of quads (fourwheelers). Just this season and just in the New England racing scene, there has been one death (Todd Vescovi RIP) and two very close calls. One occured when our good friend had another quad land on top of him during his first ESPN race appearance. The other just happened and to make a long story short, "he way it was explained is Jose was thrown off and faceplanted on the dirt , when the quad flipped the rear grab bar came through the eye openeing of his helmet and the full weight of the quad came down on Jose's face/head...he is very lucky to be alive."

" ...the seat grab bar crushed through the helmet and crushed the right side of his face. All the bones on that side are broken and we're concerned about vision in his right eye."

Skiing is not the only sport experiencing tragedys as a result of pushing the limits of how fast or how big you can go. We cannot say to stop it, we have to stop progessing because injuries are going to be a factor no matter what is going on. To be honest I don't know where I'm going with this post, it's just that with all these incidents happening it just reminded me of what happened with skiing in the past two seasons. Well I'll just end it with what one person said,

"Its times like these I say to you guys remember this is a sport for FUN. Dont make such a big deal and sweat the little things and take a step back and realize how lucky we all are just to be able to enjoy what we are doing."

u make a valid point

i agree with it

sometimes i question if progresing in a sport that i do liesurly other then my main sport hockey is worth getting hurt bbadly over. then the fact that the ruush you get after landing a trick youve been workin on forever is priceless. i guess it all depends on who the person is

wsorry to hear about ur buddy

I know, it's starting to get silly, I can't see how it's worth it. It's getting terrible in our sport, and like you said, in other sports as well. I feel that the biggest cause of tshese accidents are the pros who are just going bigger, and bigger. But I guess that what they do, and how they do. Everyone can easily have different opinions with this. But I agree with you. Life is too valuable to risk it to the amount that people are.

im not saying that that is not an amazing point-but there are death in every sport..ie-lacrosse or hockey-but these sports are not progreesing. its just sometimes very unfortunate and tragic situations that cause these accident. as far as progression goes in the world of "extreme" sports.. its not going to stop because it hasnt stopped since its started. so take that into account

Lax and Hockey are progressing. Lax has come a long way and is spreading all through the US. It is progressing heavily.

ok, the rules and basic concept of how the sport is conducted hasnt changed. as far as it spreading-i dont consider it progression, that expansion and gaining popularity

what about the new gear availible to players like ofset heads/shafts, new stringing solutions, lighter weight pads, new metal compounds. that has come a long way since the natives played, all with what are now "womens" sticks, just more primative. and who are you to say the rules havnt changed? when the sport was first created, it was played between tribes, and the tribe that lost was killed and eaten. the losing team isnt killed anymore, now is it? change is all relative. it hasnt changed much in the last 5 years, but yes, it has changed some. and since its creation it has changed an unmeasurable amount

Look at the Aerials guys. They go way bigger than we do and they still get hurt. Aerials is way oldschool and not progressing. Injuries are part of the sport.
