i just read the whole thing and heres a summary: Chappelle's Show was seen as a racially unstable show, and what i mean is Dave's racist jokes made for controversy in the media and privately, his fame underground and in the mainstream elevated this sense that racial progress that had been made in the last 50 years was now obsolete.
Many celebrities were unhappy with the message that Dave seemed to be portraiting. These included: Oprah Winfrey, Al Sharpton, Bill Cosby, Jesse Jackson, and Louis Farrakhan. These were all black people with high social and religious status.
They made private verbal and written attacks to Dave including a voodoo doll of him dressed as the "black white supremecist" with needles in it.
They did not know that the others were as upset as they were. When they finally figured this out they formed a group to bring dave down that was called "the dark crusaders". They hired three body guards who followed Dave around and broke into his home at night on several occasions. They also made verbal attacks towards him telling him to end the show, via telephone calls and in one instance his television was tapped and Oprah warned him to end the show.
Dave continued to film seasons and air the previously recorded shows so the threats contiued, this continued to happen for quite some time and Dave developed paranoia. Dave's wife and close relatives did not beleive what he was telling them regarding the dark crusaders and what had happened to him, thinking that he was unable to control his emotions about his wealth and fame.
One night dave awoke to one of the body guards sitting on his chest and his wife sleeping, drugged beside him. They told him again to cancel the show and threatened him saying, if we can do this imagine what we could do to your wife and kids.
Another instance like the previous one happened when he got out of the shower and the body guards were all in his bathroom. They threatened him again, saying that maybe they would break into his bathroom and his wife or kids would be in the shower instead.
Dave continued with the show for a while and many of the dark crusader's called him including Al Sharpton, and Bill Cosby. Cosby and Sharpton seemed to be the biggest leaders of the dark crusader's.
Threats continued, the stalking continued, until the Day after Christmas 2004, he recieved a letter from the dark crusaders, they enclosed a picture of someone resembling Sharpton's stature in his child's bedroom.
This prompted Dave to take immediate action, and, knowing that Bill Cosby was on the forefront of this operation, he called him. Bill said that the harrasment would not stop until there was news of the cancellation of the show in the press.
Dave then made the decision to go to South Africa and stay there with a friend to protect himself and his family from the dark crusaders. Finally Time magazine covered the story of the discontinuation of the show and had an interview with dave in which he did not elude to dealing with the dark crusader's at all.
After reading the article the dark crudaders had gotten what they wanted and agreed not to be seen in public for the next 12 months. The disassembled then.
