The Camera Gear review thread

I'm not sure if something like this exists, but just recently rented some gear and thought it'd be cool if we had a thread to post reviews on recent gear you've used, whether it be bodies, lenses, lights, mics, stabilizers, etc.

I'll start, rented the Ronin-M and A7S mk II this week and have some thoughts when they're still fresh in my mind.

A7s Mk ii

- was surprised that my high speed sandisk cards weren't capable of recording 4k. Got a card that was capable, and damn it looks sooooo good.

- 120fps @ 1080 was awesome to have, but wish 4k had 60fps

- lowlight was indeed insane

- Mini HDMI port SUCKS, monitor kept having issues with the connection

- Battery life is pretty weak. Fully charged battery lasted about an hour in the cold

- Autofocus was surprisingly slow, didn't work for the shots that I was going for

- Besides that I liked everything, UI was a little confusing for a first time user

- Debating picking it up as a b-roll camera

Ronin- M

- Unreal, I think I need to buy one. Had used the regular ronin before and it had some issues, none which the M series had.

- Takes a bit to learn how to stabilize but once you learn it, you have it down and it only takes between 5-10 minutes to balance.

- Battery life is GREAT. used it for 3 hours outside in the cold and then had another shoot inside for another hour plus and still had some juice left

- DJI assistant APP is super easy to use and never had any problems connecting

- Packs down very quick and fits in a surprisingly small Pelican Case

- Had some issues with briefcase mode but could have been user error

That's it for now, hopefully it's helpful for somebody and if anyone has any questions, I can't guarantee I'll answer them but I'll try.

Post up your gear reviews!

they have a spot on reviews to rate camera gear, kinda new and needs more camera categories.

the a7sii isnt going to have reliable autofocus if you arent using a sony lens. with an adapter you cant use autofocus for video.

briefcase mode always sucks with the ronin and ronin m. I dont see the point of it skiing its made more so the gimbal and get lower in tight spaces. I just hold the top handle if I need to low for skiing.

also you can update the ronin firmware to the latest one the ronin m uses and it might fix some of the issues your talking about not sure what they are.

I had never seen that part of NS, my apologies.

About the auto-focus, I tried it with a sony E mount lens and the autofocus worked pretty damn good it was just really slow. It would eventually get the focus just took a few seconds, unlike some other cams I've used that are super fast.

Good looks on the firmware update on the ronin, I just rented it so I was thinking it'd come up to date, but that could have been the issue
