the only reason youd have to buy another one, would be yourself not giving a fuck because its not expensive and spilling a drink on it.

i wont be getting my laptop for college til atleast next summer, but i am wondering from an architecture student's point, mac or pc? i really want a mac but i hear getting software (for architecture) can be hard and the prices are much more.
 
im thinking about wentworth, in boston, and they give you macbook pros your sophmore year. i forget what you get freshman year, though.
 
everyone i know who owns an hp has had to have it repaired within the first year and were completely annoyed with the service experienced during repair. i've had to have my macs fixed before, but on the laptop i'm using now, i haven't had anything done to it in 4 years. so i'm happy. just need to upgrade it a bit.
 
First, that has been my icon since I started posting. Second, I bought my PC myself like a responsible adult, and have had it for 4 years without a single problem whatsoever, rendering the mac argument useless. Being in a computer security program, I also love hearing about how invincible Macs are from viruses and such. I look forward to the day when you all have your banking information stolen "because that never happens with a Mac." However, I'm done with this thread because the abundance of Mac fanboys is overwhelming. If I read many more posts I may just start listening to jam bands and wearing a scarf every day of the year. Enjoy your "grown up" discussion. Little ironic coming from the one that trashed Windows 7 without so much as an explanation don't you think?
 
lol dude the macbook 16 costs a little more than it. And I guarantee it is more powerful and will preform faster than said macbook. Also, lol@virus argument, if you're not a moron, its not hard to stay away from virus's.

To all the retards saying MBP have bad specs look at what I can get for the same amount of money. Do you even know what those numbers mean? Honestly specs only come into play when your dealing with games, otherwise most of those numbers are not going to affect any of your day to day activities. When purchasing a laptop you need to look pass the specs because this item is not going to just sit on your desk and collect dust. You need to take into account battery life, portability, ease of use, as opposed when buying a desktop you just want to get the most bang for your buck.
With regards to the criteria i labeled MBP imo dominate all their competitors, however they are also expensive. You just gotta weigh the pros and cons yourself, being a desktop window user and a mac laptop user I can assure you I am not brand loyal, but I love my MBP and think it is one of the best designed products I have ever used.
 
Not just games, editing video and using some engineering software. And really, not a retard. I wanted something more powerful than a mac, and I damn well know I did that. Editing video with vegas or anything takes A LOT of memory.
 
I honestly love this retort. It is such a great one. If you think that OSX or whatever they are on now is an optimal operating system you are kidding yourself. It still runs on UNIX, just like Linux and they both have their vulnerabilities.

Fact is kid, the usability is the same. You can do things on a Windows you can't on a Mac, and vice versa. Additionally, you can dual boot so that you have OSX and Windows on one computer if you so choose due to the compatibilities of the Intel chipset nowadays.

Moreover, OSX is NOT more secure than Windows, this is a downright lie. It is less ATTACKED as has been said previously. It is actually far less secure. Give it a few years, when people start to actually care about Mac's and Mac users, you will find your plethora of viruses, spyware and malware around every corner and it will take Mac years to catch up.

If you use a computer just for internet, adobe programs (photoshop, illustrator...) a mac will be fine for you.

Otherwise get the HP.
 
That hp might be better quality, but I have an hp dv5t that is about a couple years old. My biggest problems are the durability.
Within these 2 years the left mouse button has broken so it clicks loudly and giggles. It still works but is annoying. I took the laptop apart but the whole mouse area is one molded piece and can't be replaced.
The finish where I rest my hands has become worn away and the raw gray plastic is showing through in places. This is also happening around the trim that wraps the side of the laptop.
The side panel for the DVD player became loose on one side and can lift off and catch on things.
I developed a green vertical line that now doesn't go away on my screen (apparently this can be a loose screen connection, but I don't want to take the laptop apart again).
The softtouch volume control buttons at the top never work right. If you try to use them it will start glitching out and keep moving the volume up and down. Then the computer needs to be restarted to stop it.
At the 2 year mark the battery is now dead and won't hold a charge for longer than 15 minutes.
I had to replace my charger a couple months ago because it stopped working.
All the hardware/software and internal components works fine and I have no complaints, but it is the cheap, crappy chassis that will make me not buy another hp.
 
for the battery duration, it is the same for every battery. there are ways to make it last longer like only charging when your battery is dead.
 
Yeah I know the battery thing is not too terrible. I always only change it when at 0 and go to full, so that is about as good as it is going to get. I do use the crap out of my laptop though.
I am going to run this one into the ground because it has basically no resale value at this point. Then I am considering a Mac because they seem to have much better chassis durability.
 
New Lenovo's have software that charges and decharges the battery through cycles if it is always plugged in, which causes the battery to lose little of it's total life.

Awesome idea really to have it software dependent. You should look up new Lenovo's, they are killing it for build quality lately.

I bought my 15" MBP last July and it still runs like the day I bought it. It was under $2000 and I used my graduation money for it so technically I didn't even buy it.

For the amount of money and time you will probably have to spend in the next 1-3 years to backup your PC, pay for virus protection (if you dont get a free provider), run system updates, repair the thing when it overheats and crashes, ETC ETC ETC - you probably could have saved yourself the hassle by just purchasing the Apple to begin with.

And if you REALLY miss windows, you can always do Bootcamp on your MBP. I hear Windows runs better on a Mac anyways....

Its actually common sense. Just because I'm a girl doesn't mean I don't know how to operate a computer. Get your head out of your ass and WAKE UP. Just because you're sitting behind a computer screen right now doesn't make you any more badass than the rest of us.
 
It is NOT common sense. Allow me to debunk you for the following reasons:

1) Comodo internet security, free virus protection suite that is one of the most highly rated and takes no time to set up or oporate

1.a.) You are under the assumption that you do not need any protection on your Mac, which is a fallacy. They are less secure than Windows machines, they are also less ATTACKED. This will not last, I will guarantee it.

2) Run System Updates - All computers need system updates, if you don't have system updates then you aren't utilizing your computer to your full potential. This includes updating Mac OS as well as anything else. The fact that Mac DOESNT have updates regularly is actually a negative. Value neutral for both parties.

3) Repair the thing when it overheats and crashes. This is a problem of PROPER maintenance and nothing to do to the computer. Both Macs and Windows PCs can overheat. The fact that you think this is a common problem is actually the biggest strike against you. Repairs? What repairs? My Lenovo is more robust than any Mac you will ever buy.

4) Hassle? Apple is hardly hassle free.

Next time, Get your head out of your ass and WAKE UP. Just because you think you have the greatest computer in the world doesn't mean you do, nor does it give you the entitlement to give someone else an opinion when you don't know what you are talking about.
 
new operating system for MBP is so dope...plus being having final cut is key for me...but if ur not into editing then its really up to you
 
I did not say I have the greatest computer in the world. And as you can see in the rest of this thread, more people clearly favor a Mac over a Windows PC.

Obviously all computers need updates, and I agree it would be stupid not to utilize - which is why I always check for updates every few days, as well as run a scheduled weekly update. No different than any other computer.

From my experience, I don't have to look far to see that a mac holds up better than a PC. I go to one of the biggest technological schools on the east coast (RPI). You can buy a laptop through the school with their mobile computing program. They offer several versions of the TI LENOVO laptops. A professor did a survey in our class of who has had their computer less than 2 years, and of these people who has had computer problems within the last 2 WEEKS. Everyone with the Lenovo's raised their hands. Myself, on the other hand, have not had 1 problem with my computer since the day I bought it.

Now I am not saying my mac/a mac is indestructible, because no computer is, I am saying that I have had a lot less problems (if any) with my computer when compared to almost everyone else's around me.

And I do not use my mac to just 'go on facebook chat or check NS'. As an architecture major I run major software programs for the design work I have to do.
 
So you are sampling one class, and think that is representative of anything? Surely for being an architect you have taken statistics, and would know that this means nothing.

Macs are for the most part, overrated and overpriced. I have a Lenovo that has only had ONE problem ever, and it is because I triple boot (2 Windows OS partitions and one Linux partition) and I had an issue with boot manager hibernation recovery.

I can tell you that unless I am absolutely forced to I will never use a Mac. My computer was $700 less than an MBP and has better hardware in it and has been bulletproof for 2 years now. Just the other day, I was editing and encoding in Adobe Premiere for my website that I was building in Dreamweaver while generating images and animations for the site in Photoshop and Illustrator. Yes, a Mac can do all of that too, but I was doing it for a fraction of the price.

People that have computer problems are people that don't know what they are talking about and are not tech literate. You might know what you are talking about, but by your first argument you show that you are either illiterate with technology or else extremely biased.
 
My friend bought a new $1400 laptop with 7 and has had a bunch of issues with it. Crashing Freezing ect and has already had to have it repair within a month of owning it. Its also one of the Hp laptops with Beats and really not that impressed by the sound. While the speakers on the 13" macbook pro are awful as well that has been my only complaint about it. And you can always just throw in some earphones
 
put the same specs in both... OS X will kill, the PCs are just adding more to keep up.
i have MBP 15 for like man... i have the 1st one. since they came out. i have had minimal problems (and its me doin shit not the macbook) It is amazing. Go MBP you wont regret it.
 
lol not everyone is a fucking gigabyte point dexter like you.. i use my laptop for school, watching porn, watching movies and a few other random things. I also cringe at the idea of having to maintain my operating system in any way. My mac has being going strong doing all of those things without me ever having to fix anything. I
