The Benefits of Travel

I just thought i'd mention to everyone on here, especially those nearing the end of high school about he benefits of seeing the world before going to school. Take a year, and go somewhere. You can learn so much about different cultures, you build tolerance and respect and learn so much more about yourself then you could have ever imagined. It rebuilds your outlook and really helps you figure out all the shit that confuses you throughout high school. You meet incredible inspiring people, i met a couple who had been travelling out of their home country for 5 continuous years, i wouldn't know where to begin telling you their stories. Learning to speak to use gestures and facial expressions to have a conversation with someone is a true experience. Everyone should consider this. Countries like new zealand and australia, are very safe and easy to travel through, Southeast asia is easier to travel through then canada, tours through africa are dirt cheap for what you get. Even the middle east, contrary to what the media will have you believe, is mostly safe for travel (if you're male especially). The local people you meet are so incredible the stories they have, it really does change your world for the better. I really sincerely think the world would be a better, more understanding place if more people took the time to experience what different cultures have to offer, particularily since the post 9/11 paranoia. Take it under consideration and don't let people talk you out of it...they always use fear tactics. I was told i'd be murdered if i went to cambodia...what i found was amazingly friendly people, no different then you or i, but with different opinions and outlooks on life. Not for one minute was i afraid of anything, in any place that i've been. I've spoken with isrealies, shocked and outraged by what they read about their country in western news (completly blown out of proportion) people who have travelled through china, nepal, pakistan, india, columbia, throughout africa...with nothing but fond memories and a desire to one day return.

Take a year, it'll unforgetable and by far, the best decision you'll ever make. It's easy, just get the plane ticket and go from there.

You're old enough to know that you won't get a lot of things in life because you don't have tits' - One of the 1/4 pipe builders at snowjam winnipeg to a couple young boys in response to why we'd let 3 girls on the ramp and not them

I'm posting from Thailand, where I am on exchange for a half year. I'm 15, by the way.

how do you like it so far??

Head up to Pai, near Chaig Mai, if you can, it's such a sweet little town...nothing to do, but that's part of the beauty of the place.

i agree fully. learn a new language, travel the world. hell since ive been traveling ive realized that the european mentality suites me much better than that of north american culture. davidh, what exactly are you doing in thailand and how do you feel about the country thus far. i know nothing about the area so if you want to, fill me in a little.

no offence to americans, because I am one, but people elsewhere (out of the US) seem to be much more educated in foreign affairs than any one I know. I recently traveled to Sweden and Denmark, and just in general conversation, it seems that they know more about my country than I do.

I am in total agreeance with you, people need to get out and travel. It opens your eyes to so many different things, and is so educational even if you don't realize it.

Americans seem like they just don't travel. I met a lot of people when i was away, mostly from canada and europe. I did meet one american couple, but everyone i talked too also noticed that there were very few out there considering the number of people in the country. The running joke is 'if a car backfires in paris, a million american's cancel their travel plans'. It's a shame too, i think americans are the ones who need travel the most.

ec-tom, speak for yourself, just because youre uneducated doesn't mean the rest of us are.

Why do black people dislike me? If it wasn't for white dudes they would still be slaves.

And I'm sure I would own a few.

nononono ec tom has a point. the average european knows more about other countries around the world including america than THE AVERAGE AMERICAN knows. A V E R A G E

i was told to take a year off after this year(im going into grade 12,my last year of high school)by my parents because they say i'm not ready and immature.i agree. but i feel like i'll lose all my friends that i have now and feel uncomfortable being a year back in University. I also have no money.

How much did all that travelling cost you jibs?

'pet what? pet her kneecap farrel'

depends on where you go and how long. My plane ticket cost me $2000CAD, that got me a day in singapore, to New Zealand and then to bangkok for an unlimited stop over. I did 8 months in NZ, but had a work visa so i did about 4 months of orchard work there and spent $1200 on a car, 1 month hitchhiking in australia, then 2 months in asia. After the plane ticket, i left canada with $2500, and earned $7400 in NZ. So for 11 months travel with a tight budget $12000 will get you around. My sister did 3 months in europe right after high school, saw 5 countries, lived it up and spent 4 to 5 grand including her plane ticket. If you go to a place like thailand or vietnam, you can live really well on 500US a month...though you can still get by on 300.

As far as your maturity level...you learn fast how grown up you are once you cut the strings to your parents. You'll never lose your friends, they'll always be back in the summer and at christmas. As far as being 1 year behind in school..so what, that means you'll have 1 more year to be a kid and avoid the 'real world' 9 to 5 career. And besides, chicks dig older men.
