Thankful to be Sober :)

Drinking addiction is really not something you can compare to something like opiate/heroin addiction. 9 out of 10 opiate addicts relapse. 9 out of 10. Thats the same percentage of doctors that dont want obamacare. So for an addiction like heroin there needs to be something to substitute for heroin yhat allows addicts to live a normal life. Unfortunately in america your only options are suboxone and methadone, two terrible drugs which give users horrible side effects snd cognitive impairment. In europe they have realized that these demrugs are substandard and dont "hold" addicts and they have come up with new substitution options that addicts actually like. In austria bulgaria slovenia and somewhat in the UK, they treat opiate addicts with slow release morphine, a prototypical opioid with one of the cleanest side effect profiles of any opiate. In switserland, germany, holland and the uk they even use pure heroin injections for addicts. Both of these drugs are much better at "holding" addicts because they are drugs the the addicts are actually satisfied with and the addicts, now having their addictions boiled down from an all consuming nightmare to a daily trip to the pharmacy or heroin assisted treatment clinic, so they can finally go about living normal lives. Addicts in these european treatment programs have normal lives, jobs, friends, and families. In america we are literally in the stone age compared to europe in regards to opiate addiction treatment options and the lack of progress is truly disgusting. Its hard to take addiction treatment in america seriously when we are so stuck in the mud with regards to opiate addiction treatment. Fuck america

Im kind of on the fence as to whether or not addictions qualify as diseases. There is no defined cut off as to when you have "caught" the disease as in other normal diseases

After a night of drinking the smell/taste of alcohol makes me feel so I'll. I don't think I could ever become addicted, maryo did you ever think you could become an alcoholic?

I agree with you. I'm not trying to start anything, I just think that in order to "cure" something you have to understand it from it's very beginning. I think calling it a disease really throws off how we understand, diagnose it and treat it.

I feel like this is something a lot of NS'ers deal with. We're all crazy adrenaline junkies, why else would we do absurdly dangerous shit on skis? It's the same driving force that leads people to use substances.

how it it not? alcoholism is a genetic trait in which some people can be way more prone to at birth. don't understate how serious it can be if you have never been personally affected

My kids are very thankful I stopped drinking. Alcoholism is considered a family "disease" because it affects every member of the family whether they realize it or not. It can, and does tear families a part. Everyone suffers! So yes they are very grateful I'm sober. They don't have to live in fear that mom isn't all there, if you know what I mean. There used to be conflict between me and their dad over my drinking, so this had to be very stressful on them, hearing us fight. Poor kids. But I can't look back and dwell on the damage. Thank God I got healthy and still have the love of my family.

So YES, they can depend on me now completely. And I'm definitely a better parent. I have my self esteem and integrity back. I feel good about myself. I don't live in regret, remorse, shame, guilt, fear, anxiety and everything else that goes along with addiction. I'm not preoccupied on drinking, putting the bottle before everything else. Now my family IS 1st. I'm far from perfect, but they can always rely on me for guidance and help with their own struggles.

Certainly I never thought I would become an alcoholic. But looking back on my history, I see the signs were there even at a young age. But as a teenager, it's not easy to distinguish between normal partying and problem drinking, let alone alcoholism. We feel invisible. Like "everyone does it". But the difference is the "normal" drinker grows up and is able to stop when they want and control their intake, where the alcoholic gets progressively worse, relying on more and more alcohol to TRY and get the desired affect. The craving for alcohol is always there. You become preoccupied. Alcohol controls your life, if you let it. It was a horrible way to live, but at the time, I couldn't imagine life without it either. Can't live with it, or without it. Thank God I don't have to live that life anymore.

this thread is good for all the younger kids on here who see us talking about weed and 'kratom' and who associate good park skiing with drugs and booze. In Mutiny, probably the best film of the year they show everyone smokin and theres that shot of the dude pounding those airplane mini bottles. Hittin a tranny might bruise you up if you fall but addiction, even nicotine is way way worse than physical injury. Ive been there Maryo, good thread.

If you actually know a lot of kids that have gone to rehab for heroin... sorry dude. That is fucked up. I live in western Canada and feel as though drugs are fairly prevalent. I don't think mdma/molly/ecstasy really existed for our parents. At least it wasn't as readily available as it is today. I've definitely played around with drugs a little bit and I believe it can be done safely, know your limits and know what you're putting into yourself (testing kits).

I'm not sure if this is true or what but I have a tendency to think drugs are safer in Canada than the US. The penalties aren't as bad for getting caught, which results in cheaper drugs, and since the drugs are already cheap, people have less of a reason to cut them to make more profits.

Yeah LSD is a fringe drug these days, not used all that often that I've seen. Coke is still really popular around here, probably because of the amount of oil money though. Oil and drugs go hand in hand, when dudes that haven't ever had much money before, are suddenly making thousands... well its a recipe for disaster.

No its not. The FDA and the government just have your brain trained to think that it is. My 1976 edition glossary of herbs would agree with me.

I work a job 2 weeks on 2 weeks off, during my two weeks off its drinking 3-5 times a week, usually blacking out and LSD MDMA coke and shrooms. During my two weeks at work I have no cravings for any of it, but on my time off I can't really say no to it either. I don't know if I have a problem or not

I know. It should be a lesson for the us. Less enforcment= cheaper drugs= less problems resulting from addicts needing loads of money

True.

Weed goes both ways, benefits are overwhelmingly positive but peoples insistence that it can never have any negative effects is just dumb.

To OP- Congrats!

We are all different in what we can and can't handle. I have a worse addiction to weed than booze or cigs, I can keep booze and cigs in my possession and not use them, if I have weed I will smoke it so the only way for me to not blaze is to have none, I just don't have the control or willpower.

And theres probably 5x as many people who would say the same but opposite, that they couldn't handle having a beer in the fridge without drinking it, or a pack of smokes in their car without smoking them, yet they could easily have a dimebag from 2 weeks ago in their dresser that they are saving to smoke for when they feel like it.

The only thing SERIOUSLY that pisses me off about recovering addicts is their stubborn insistence that moderation doesn't work. That shit does way more damage than good and installs an all or nothing attitude in people who really should not be thinking about things that way.

Say you are a recovering coke addict. If someone offers you a line of coke on a night out, you do it, and then the next morning you don't call your dealer for an 8 ball that is a huge win. You did absolutely nothing wrong. You owe noone any apologies. But to the NA person doing a line of blow means you've blown your 1 year of clean time, won't get another chip at your next meeting, and therefore you might as well call up your guy and get another ball.

Hahah I was kidding. But maybe substitute it with actual skiing instead of liking athlete statuses and following them like a rock star groupie. Or maybe hitting the gym. But either way, was a joke and the important thing is she is sober and healthy.

Yeah I don't even know what drugs were big when I was a kid since that wasn't my thing. I pretty much just heard about pot and cocaine. I think kids today are more aware of the dangers of drinking, and certainly seem to be better about NOT drinking and driving. Here in Minnesota there is 0 tolerance for drinking under age, and the consequences, if caught, can really mess up your future opportunities in life.

Heroin is VERY SCARY! The area I live in has the purest form of Heroin in the country, and it's inexpensive! The number of OD's and deaths from heroin are at epidemic levels. It's so sad. I've known a few kids who have died recently in our city, full of potential, even great athletes, and they fall victim to this horrible drug.

That's stupid. Something like underage drinking should not mess up your future. Unless you are doing something destructive...

Yea, USA (partielly Canada too) logic:

Sure yea it's cool, you can go get paid to be rammed in the cornhole by some old guy on film and post it to the internet. But you can't have a beer since you're only 18!

i obviously dont have a drinking problem but i think that most people know when they've hit that point that they never want to hit again in drunkeness. mine was waking up naked and covered in scratches and cuts in the back of my car, then still being to drunk to drive to work. since then i have never really been much of a drinker to get drunk but more for the social aspect like a beer at a party. so go maryo and keep it sober. but honestly weed is not drug that anyone should be worried about and i think is a much safer alternative to alcohol.

My girlfriends mom is a alcoholic and cocaine addict. I hope she ods one day so she isn't a burden anymore and can find her peace in death and so can her loved ones.

Rehab is not a option and she has already been to rehab multiple times. She will not go to rehab period. Jail is a option as rehab is something that may happen.

The dumbest thing ever was when my oldest son got a minor for something he texted on his phone. His phone was confiscated when a teacher saw him looking at an incoming call ( ironically from me regarding a family emergency). When they take your phones at his school, they read your texts if they feel there was reason to think you were using it to cheat on a test or something. Anyway, one of his texts they read was replying to a friend...... "Haha, no problem man I've been clean for weeks".

When reading that text the school figured that meant he at some point wasnt "clean" and they gave him a minor and suspended from hockey for 2 weeks and on put as strike one of his highschool record. That was the beginning of 4 long years of highschool. Stupid is right in that situation.

Had a friend change someone FB status to "I'm gay" and he was facing cyber bullying charges nothing happened though.

fuPowder cocaine or crack?

I don't really think powdered cocaine is any more addictive than marijuana. Really not sure how anyone can go to rehab for it. Shes is probably an alcy who just likes a line of blow every now and again.

Theres really nothing wrong with powdered cocaine if you are an adult and do it on the weekends when you are out drinking. Its not that addictive however you just might not want to go out drinking if you don't have some.

I don't really like coke either whenever its around I like doing the tiniest little key bump just for a little buzz but not enough to fuck me up. BUt I like crack its a 100x better high than sniffing powdered coke.

(No I have never smoked it regularly and I don't think I have smoked any since I was 21 or 22 and Im 28 now but if I was at a festival and bought a bag of coke you can bet your ass I wouldn't waste it up my nose and would try and find baking soda.)

Recreational drugs are awesome in moderation.

.Dude its not that addictive. Rock is addictive powder isn't. Go to rehab for powder coke and see if everyone doesn't make fun of you. Especailly if you are a man I can kind of see a woman getting really into powdered coke but not a dude.

There is a reason 9/10 normal people enjoy a line on a night out but almost noone respectable smokes crack even though the high is way better. ITs cause its seriously addictive.

I told you I like crack way more than powdered coke but haven't done it in over 5 years. I wouldn't smoke crack unless I am drunk and at a party, and trust me I don't think I have any friends who would be OK with it if at a party I pulled out a spoon and started cheffing up in front of people. And on the same token while all of them would be pissed if I sat on the couch and cooked up crack at a party literally not one would care if I sat down and chopped up a line and nearly every single one of them would want a line. But I doubt anyone noone I know would smoke crack with me. (Haha I seriously couldn't tell you what any of the friends who I did tons of drugs other than weed age 15-20 are up to right now life sort of takes you out of touch with those kinds.) If you ever take a hit of rock you'll understand right away from just 1 hit why its so addictive and realize that powdered coke is pussy shit and theres nothing wrong with it.

That fuckhead Ronald Reagan totally duped all white people into wasting their yayo up their nose though lol!

Addiction doesn't affect everyone the same way. There are some people who have no problem recreationally using physically addictive drugs. Look at all the kids in college who drink all the time and then graduate and have no further issues. But at the same time, there are people who can't turn away from drugs. Maybe you fall into the first category.

Everything in moderation.Nothing wrong with a couple glasses of wine with dinner, or a few drinks out with your friends to get a little Friday night buzz, or even a couple bong rips after work if that floats your boat. It generally takes making mistakes to get to that sort of realization though. You have to experience a bad hangover or a night of not remembering in order to make your choice. Experience is key with stuff like this.

Props to you for realizing that drugs and alcohol has a negative effect on YOUR life because of misuse. Sometimes people are happier and better off being completely sober. You seem to be one of those people, and I truly am happy that you came to that realization and are living a sober lifestyle.

As for me, I'm going to enjoy a couple good bottles of wine with my friends over dinner tonight, legally. When my homework/studying is finished, I'll probably take a couple rips of my friend's bong. And I'm a Chemical Engineering major... haven't lost all my brain cells yet, it seems.

Circumstance is also a major player. If you have kids and are responsible for your own life, as well as theirs, you probably don't want to be downing bottles of wine every night and smoking joints all day. Leaving the kids at home with a babysitter on a Friday night so you can go out with some friends for a few rounds of drinks? Pretty harmless.

Hahah ya if you call drinking a max of twice a week and hardly ever getting drunk (during my junior year of college, mind you) and generally not smoking during the week an addiction...

yaya basically what LJ said, partying and blazing is fun but in moderation, being clear afterwords feels better then going into the high, some people can handle being their own moderators and some fall into addiction, im glad you got your life in control MaryO!
