Don't get too excited yet, this is still a REALLY SKETCHY test of a program we're trying to use.

You see, streaming live video on our servers would cost such a crazy amount of money that NS would go out of business in a matter of minutes.

However, there is a program called peercast that allows the viewers of a video broadcast to share the bandwidth usage between them. It's the same idea as bit torrent. There's NO adware/spyware, so don't worry about that.

If you want to participate in this test there's a few easy steps you have to follow.

First, download Peercast.http://www.peercast.org/download.php

YOU HAVE TO DOWNLOAD THIS. You can't watch it without the program. Please make sure you have at least three outgoing streams enabled, so you can help share. If nobody shares their connection, it won't work.

Next, go tohttp://yp.peercast.org/?find=NSTV&Submit=Search

That should take you to the NSTV link.

If not, type clickhttp://yp.peercast.org and put NSTV in the search bar.

Once peercast is running on your computer, click on the Play button to watch.

The video is streaming in .wmv right now, so you'll probably have to use realplayer or windows media player to watch it. I'm trying to figure out how to get it in different formats, but do to the fact that I'm a tech retard, I can't figure it out yet.

Oh yeah, if it doesn't work (which I assume will be the case for a lot of people) please post your Operating system, Internet connection type, media player you used, and whether or not you're behind a router or some other kind of internet sharing device.

yeh...call up espn..sell the idea to them...you could have like broadcasts from competitions and news for upcoming stuff...and interviews

the program downloaded and when i start peercast it opens up musicmatch and tries to connect to the stream then nothing

yea, i let my friends watch sometimes when they get bored. ive rented out some bleachers for them to sit in actually, im thinking of making big foam hands with 'no jaime! not in there!' written on them.

i swear to drunk im not god.

I would imagine this uses a lot of bandwidth since each user is uploading the stream to others. I'd love to help you test it out, but i'm on a college network which limits our bandwith to 1.5GB/wk. So, i'm going to have to wait till spring break to giver a try.

For those of you with upload bandwidth limits, just keep this in mind.

Also if you guys do manage to connect, could you please leave it connected? The more people watching, the more chance of it working there is.

I'm going to leave the test running for a few hours, so please try periodically.

I'm using Firefox on a sweet wireless connection. I pressed play on the Peercast website after I downloaded it, and it said 'Channel not found.'

I will keep all this for bug testing for the next round.

Also, if it doesn't work, try a few other channels and tell me if those work.

That way I'll know if it's something wrong with your system, or mine. (probably mine)

That seems to be to most common error. My friends who tried to connect have the same one.

Like doug said, you should post your ssetup details. it might be possible to determine the one thing thats causeing the same problem. I bet its something really silly and simple too!

I almost positive the problems are going to be caused by the ports 7144 and 7145 being closed.

Internet connection type - 1536/384 kbps cable connect

media player you used - Winamp and Windows Media Player

Behind a router.

It looks like peercast is trying to connect to my own computer to get the stream. It should be connecting to someone else, no?

Actually that was 2 minutes ago. Now it's 'Channel Not Found'

the channel seems to be gone completely. and before that, it used to say 'channel not found' for me. im on xp, and using a wireless connection, if that helps.

Every1 was saying try ESPN for a show once a week or whatever, that will never work.. try SPIKE TV they have a paintball show on sat. mornings for god sakes

 
Channel not found. What is IP of the computer that is initially sending out the broadcast? PM if you don't want to put it on here.

Internet connection: (Where it comes from at the root. Ie. cable modem-router-wireless card, or LAN within university, or whatever)

If you guys give me this information I can figure out what isn't working. Without it I have no way of figuring out what is wrong.

everything works fine exept the picture is frozen in windows media player, the sound is fine. It connected right away for me. But it would work alot better if you could get it in Quicktime.

I have a:

iMac g4

os x 10.2.8

Media Player- I have all of them

Cable

SMILE, its the second best thing you can do with ur mouth

It keeps opening with Dell Power DVD for me which is weird. I'm on a Dell Inspiron 5150 Laptop with Windows XP
