Tell me if this would persuade you...

I wrote this for my persuasion class, this is the first part. Basically I have to write a summary which would persuade my professor to go pro-marijuana. I hate all of the marijuana threads on here but I didn't choose my topic and I'd really appreciate your guys help and opinions. +K

By the way I am not done writing this summary and I'm open to any suggestions on how to end it off.

Legalization of Marijuana

After researching this topic we have found that there are no good or logical arguments as to why marijuana should not be legalized. The amount of facts backing up this topic is astonishing and when you are done reading this we hope that you too ask the question ‘why is marijuana illegal?’

Firstly, something very obvious should be pointed out; this being that cigarettes are the number one cause of death in the world, yet the government allows the tobacco industry to make billions of dollars profit off of killing people. Alcohol comes in at number two. The two main killers of people and the government proceeds to do nothing about it. Marijuana on the other hand has not had one notable death. It is physically impossible to overdose on marijuana unless a person is literally suffocated by marijuana, humans require oxygen to breathe.

It has been said that marijuana causes cancer but actually, a study by the University of California proved that marijuana has no correlation to lung cancer.

"We hypothesized that there would be a positive association between marijuana use and lung cancer, and that the association would be more positive with heavier use," he said. "What we found instead was no association at all, and even a suggestion of some protective effect." – Donald Tashkin, Pulmonologist

It has also been said that marijuana is addictive and is also a gateway drug. A 12 year study done at the University of Pittsburgh proved differently. They found that someone’s personality is really the determining factor if they are to go use other drugs, it has nothing to do with marijuana at all. Out of 104 people who smoked marijuana only 1 went on to do cocaine and 0.1 went on to do heroin. Marijuana is not physically addictive so there are no side effects of stopping use.

According to the National survey on Drug Use and Health 54% of 12 to 17 year olds said it was easy to obtain marijuana. Marijuana is easier to obtain than alcohol and cigarettes for underage kids since it is not regulated. Not only would regulating it make it more difficult to obtain for kids and put many drug dealers out of business but it could also be taxed allowing more money for other things. There were 786,000 marijuana arrests in 2005, the United States spent over twice the amount enforcing marijuana laws than they did on education. Tax payers also pay for the marijuana drug busts so if it were regulated there would be no more need for these ‘busts’ which would save even more money. Hemp can also be used to make over 5,000 textile products and used to be the largest agricultural crop at one point. The use of hemp would also obviously boost the economy.

Not only is it smart economically but it is also smart ecologically. Anyone who is ‘eco-friendly’ should be pro-marijuana and this is why; Marijuana is highly beneficial to the ozone layer. The plant takes in lots of carbon dioxide and releases lots of oxygen. The plant can be grown almost anywhere on the earth and can also be used to make paper. Growing the plant would eliminate a lot of deforestation due to the ‘tree free paper’ and this could help solve a lot of the climate problems the world is having due to our continuous abuse of our natural resources.

So why exactly is marijuana still illegal? There is no good answer. Most politicians understand the whole debate but fear not getting elected if the majority of the general public is not on the same page. If a politician has been anti-marijuana for the last 10 years and then suddenly becomes pro-marijuana it looks very hypocritical and therefore negative on their part. The only way for it to be made legal is for people to become more educated on the subject and start asking more questions.

ya man I'm taking Advertising in college and a huge part of advertising is persuading your target audience.

dont start with "no good arguments" that whole part. it will automatically make you seem less open minded, and conducive to learning new ideas. (in the eyes of your teacher) a bad thing. dont start with such strong words.

instead begin somewhere along the lines of.... After researching the ever controversial drug of marijuana I have come to the personal conclusion that it should be legal. (XYZ back it up) develop your thesis.

after reading your first couple sentences all you did was alienate me and make me want to argue what you have said, not agree with it.

im also not seeing some of your facts backed up by credible sources, (citations? works cited?)

is this for HS, college? what?

I can't tell if your being sarcastic or your just narrow minded as fuck. But if its the latter what are these 'dangers' you believe marijuana to have?

weed is illegal because of the lumber companies. The Hemp would put them out of business. Thus, they lobby that weed should remain illegal. There are many other factors; however, this is one of the main ones.

ya I have all the citations that I'm going to footnote later. I like your idea for the intro and completely agree with that, definately will change it. It's for college btw, this is just a summary that were handing in before we debate the subject in a couple of weeks.

In your opening, you say that alcohol is the number 2 cause of death in the world. Not sure where you heard that, but there's no way it's true.

I immediately stopped reading after that. If someone's trying to convince me of something, but they aren't using true facts, their argument is immediately invalid.

i've always been told using first person, i.e.. I, me, we, you etc. is bad.that being said your intro isn't very good either way.Saying: "After researching this topic we have found that there are no good or logical arguments as to why marijuana should not be legalized."this kind of sounds like you are just saying, they are wrong, because you said so, try to at least hint at your reasons. Something more along the lines of: Although there are many arguments against lehalization they do not hold any weight due to..(insert reason here)

first off, i don't smoke, i never have, but almost all of my friends do.
even though i don't plan on smoking anytime soon, i am still pro-marijuana because of a few reasons:
1. it would stimulate the economy greatly2. it's not as dangerous as alcohol3. it's wayyyyy easier to get than alcohol (as a minor)
you stated all of these in your paper, but for some reason i wasn't a huge fan. had i not been pro-marijuana in the first place, i don't know if i would have been persuaded very well. i think that some of your sentences were constructed a little funny, and i really didn't like when you said "humans require oxygen" or something like that. everyone knows that, and you had already proved your point, you didn't need to restate it. although parts of it were shaky, i liked it overall. the statistics were good, and i had no idea that there was more money spent on weed busts than education, that's RIDICULOUS. blasphemy i say. haha
again, overall well written, but take out some of that "filler" stuff, or things that are merely restated. good luck

thats a good point which I briefly touched upon and I'll definately expand, thanks for reminding me.

As for the alcohol being 2nd most cause of death it is supposed to say in North America I fucked up.

And thank you Style eeze that was a very good constructive comment +K bud.

i'm somewhat skeptical about how you said twice as much money is spent on marijuana busts than on education. i have a hard time believing that...i definitely would need to see some legit stats on that before i believe it

not the busts dude, enforcing the marijuana laws. I should expand on that since it was unclear. But basically it's paying for the officers to work, paying for people being in jail because of it etc.

I still can't agree with you man. Here's stats from the CDC for causes of deaths.

Number of deaths for leading causes of death

* Heart disease: 631,636

* Cancer: 559,888

* Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases): 137,119

* Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 124,583

* Accidents (unintentional injuries): 121,599

* Diabetes: 72,449

* Alzheimer's disease: 72,432

* Influenza and Pneumonia: 56,326

* Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and nephrosis: 45,344

* Septicemia: 34,234

You could maybe attribute alcohol to accidents or (long stretch) Diabetes, but alcohol isn't in the top 4 at all.

Poisoning isn't even on your list and that's a huge contributor to deaths. You've forgotten that alcohol can cause liver and breast cancer, it can cause strokes and it can cause heart disease aswell.

Not to be a douche, but what exactly are the dangers? Im not saying there aren't any but if figured that if your so passionate to wright that statement than you may know some good ones.
