Tell me about Glen Plake!

One of the more senior members of my ski mates told me last night that nobody is cooler than Glen Plake!!

Call me ignorant by i hadn't heard of him, but he seems like a dude!!

Well, back in the day when skiing wasn't just skiing, it was EXTREME skiing... There were a few lads who set themselves apart as the most extreme of the extreme, and maybe, well tied with the great Scott Schmidt, there was Gleen Plake. 8feet tall, inc'l mohawk, Glenn was the baddest ass on a pair of 210's the world had ever seen. A backcountry pioneer and riper of everthing from Alaskan glacier to French Alp, to Rockies backcountry Glenn brought with him an attitude and a style that summed up the skiing movement of the late 80's and early 90's: Big mountains, Big Lines, Huge Cliffs, and even brighter colors. I had the chance to meet the man one day on my local mountain back then, Grand Targhee, best damn pow-pow skiing this side of the continental divide. I had never seen someone cut through trees with such confidence and finnesse, he looked as a torpedo navigating a corral reef with jet thrusters making precise movements and aggressive carves, smiling the whole way. I caught up to him at the bottom, I said my what's up and he just laughed for I am just a mere mortal. Glen Plake is the God of freeskiing as we know it. The fact that you didn't know who he is, well it's kind of sad, but now that you do, you must do your part to spread to the far corners of the universe the greatness of this great man... And I leave you with this...

call me lame but i think that may be one of the coolest pics i have seen in a while. Plake is one of the first people i ever saw do a grab. its in the movie 'snow what' from like 1993 i think.

If you're really interested, find the Freeskier from last year with his interview, it's pretty dope. Basically he left the country with the law on his back and skied in Europe for a few years... lots of good stories about that man.

my brother met him last year on the down home tour, or whatever its called... he said he was mad cool, and he gave my brother all this free schwag and autographs... the picture was on the FS website of him and my brother

Glen Plake is NOT an ass!!! He's about the nicest guy you will ever meet. i got a chance to ski with him on his down home tour last winter. I work at a small ski area, so one night i get out of teaching lessons, and the last person i ever expected to meet was Glen Plake. To sum it all up, i got to spend the night with him cruising the park, sliding rails with him. the night wrapped up with a ballet lesson, then autograph signing and free stuff. best night ever.

Ya whoever said he's an ass is wrong. Atleast he was wicked cool when I met him.

So anyways, all he wants is skiing to grow. And he's just helping it grow. One of my favorite skiers, personally.

 
i have had the honor of meeting plake multiple times. he is totally one of the coolest guys i have met in the ski industry ('cept the other old school guys like john egan and mike hattrup) all those guys are the nicest, and i feel bad for all you young kids who never had the chance to watch in awe of their rocket airs and mutes, and dream of one day being able to do such things. mind you this all happened before the 'newschool' skiing movement ever was even an idea. you kids need to research your history, and respect skiings past.

a couple friends of mine talked with him for little while at a ski sale and we got shirts and posters signed and stuff.... he was a wicked cool and nice guy.

yes he was^. too bad they had kent kreitler this year. plake was real chill. you could tell hed rather be talking to the kids than the employees who didnt know him besides that he was a pro.

i ahve no problems with him at all i rode the tbar with him at High North, he was coaching at momentum. he came over one day during lunch and was talking to mercon, and nick did one of those poll flippy things only in boots off a tiny like 2 foot drop near the tent and ended up doing a misty, and plake just laughed, skated through everyone and did the same thing, with a pair of pistols on, lands switch rode away and thats the last i saw of the old bugger.

yeah dude, last year I Got to show him, his wife and Chirs Jerard of Freesier mag around for 2 days. Got to watch old ski movie with plake and hang out in his RV. His wife even made me food, she was the best. BUt glen is teh coolest person I have ever met. He's so down to earth. I had so much fun showing hagning out with him. sorry for the misspeld drunken words.

 
glen plake is a skiing legend. he go's way back and his laugh is a one of a kind. his skills are amazing and its to hard describe him. if you ever get the chance to meet him do it.

plake is so awesome. he made skiing cool way back in the day. i own 'snow what' it's so sick, you guys all have to see it sometime in your life. glen is the coolest and nicest guy ever!!

 
what would be funny is if the guy who made this thread is actually plake. seems like somthing he would do, cause he already knows hes rad, so hes just making sure everyone else does

It's just piling on at this point, but -- I met him at a moguls event and, yes, he's a terrific, friendly guy and a phenomenal skier.

 
He is seriously one of the coolest guys I have ever met. He has a passion and love for skiing, and he does it for all the right reason. You tell him that you are a skier, and you are automatically apart of his family. He has a deep understanding and appreciation for it. He also does alot to get up-and-coming riders recognized.

And his wife makes damn good breakfast, haha. We went out to his house last summer for a shoot and we showed up earlier in the morning. When we arrived, Kim cooked up a breakfast fit for a king. Afterwards, we just screwed around, went four-wheeling, I got to take his boat out, and just have alot of fun. All and all, we had a damn good time. He's one of the most chill and laid-back people.

Eat. Sleep. Breathe. Ski.
