Teaching English

I was wondering if anyone here has or is teaching english overseas. If so where did you go and do you have any recommendations?

I know a guy who is doing it in Korea. I also saw a special report on CBC and apparently it's pretty easy to get good paying jobs, making a first world salary in a thirld world country sounds lik a sweet deal. I don't think you need too many qualification either.

If I'm ever really stuck and don't know what to do for a long period of time it's something I may consider. It sounds like a great experience though, good luck Jay.

P.S. Notice my icon? You Scouser!

Hahahahahahaha. What an entrance. This is your first post in what, two years?

I have a friend who did that. Apparently it pays pretty well and they treat you okay in Japan. The problem is that the cost of living there is out of control. I have heard that they are also seeking English teachers in Central America / the Carribean.

christ its jay!

where have you been? ive had so many restless nights wanting to know where you have gone, whether you were safe from the white man, or if you might have mutated somehow to become SUPER JAY THE BROWN WONDER!

either way, its good to see you're still around, we missed you buddy

and to answer your question, i have no information on teaching english, except that ive heard the pay and perks are pretty decent, no?

Japan and Korea are the most popular places to go, because of the demand and the money you can make there (kinda goes hand in hand). I don't really want to go to either, but especially not Japan. I'm not overly concerned about money, just as long as I can manage my student loans. South America would be my first choice, but the money there is negligible. Right now I'm putting consideration into Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand, or Poland (because I absolutely loved Poland). My teacher for the certification course also told me Hong Kong or Singapore would be good for me, but I'm not really sure if I want to do either of those.

I weened myself off NS by not having Internet for 7 months. I definitely missed everyone, but it felt kinda nice to clean myself of my NS addiction.

Jay!!!! Welcome back!

That said, I've heard that financially the rewards can be great, and if you like living in different worlds cultures it could be an awesome job!

well as of this year the english teacher market is flooded in japan since the shut down of NOVA. it may be hard to find work or if you do get paid a competitive salary. and im pretty sure teachers in different prefectures of japan will be paid accordingly to the quality of living. tokyo, you get a little more. some rural hick town you get paid less. a lot of aussies do it so i wouldn't do it if you can't stand hearing epic every 5th word.

Have you considered Teach For America? If you have your heart set on teaching abroad, that obviously won't work though.

I taught in Nagoya, Japan, and can put you in touch with someone who runs a conversation school. I guess you don't want to work there though and as whattheshit said, NOVA (the biggest English conversation school company) is in the process of going out of business. The market is going to be flooded in Japan for a little while.

I have been to all of the other countries in Asia that you listed except Taiwan. If you have any question about life in those countries, standard of living, safety, money or that sort of thing I can probably help you out.

Teaching was a pretty good time, and I would consider going to Korea sometime in the future for a few months to earn a little skrilla and see that country at the same time. Most people are fluent in English in Singapore, but its completely different from our English and often incomprehensible.

I'm not overly worried about finding a job. I'm taking a certification course witih Oxford English who has tons of reputable contacts in their placement program. I'm pretty sure I can find a job just about anywhere I wanted to go (if not I can at least apply to few schools from Canada), I'm just not sure where I want to go yet, and I want to be taking off in Jan/Feb.
