Teacher Strike in B.C.

Okay so if any of you live in B.C. and are still in school, you know what I'm talking about. The teachers are on strike so no way am i at school. I'm pretty stoked on this, but my brother who's graduating this year is not happy. Well yeah, I'm not in school.
 
yeah, i don't mind missing 2 days but this better end soon, i don't want my grad year to be fucked because of this, so hopefully the government will make a move soon
 
its bullshit, its an illegal strike, force them back, whats up with these double standards, if i do something illegal i get bum fucked
 
I hate to support unions, but in this situation, they've had contracts imposed on them year after year, there is really no alternative.
 
yeah they deserve this strike, I know a lot of my teachers simply want the right to strike. They have so much support too in the province, they were standing by my school with banners and everybody was honking driving by.
 
summers off, winter breaks, and out of work by 3pm. you have nothing to complain about. get back to work.
 
haha ctually this happens all over the us all the time too...its happening right outside of burlington right now for the second time in two years...it has nothing to do with canada being "loose"
 
Yeah, we probably don't have school for this whole week, and possibly into the next week...I'm stoked because my provincial exams are next term...but its shitty for all of the Grade 12ers.
 
to bad they didnt stike in like februray. but yea, alaskan teachers were coming damn close, but they got what they needed i guess. mo money or somethin.
 
this strike is completely justified, illegal or otherwise. my dad's a teacher and is involved with bctf, so i'm pretty familiar with what they want. it's not a matter of asking for a bunch of benefits, it's a matter of actually being treated with respect and enough support to give students the attention they need.
 
A few years back we went on a ski trip for a week and we would've missed school but they had a strike the whole time. It was dope.

yeah dude, i was talking to the teachers and trying to pursuade them to go just before christmas break. that would be perfect cause we could have 3 weeks off to ski...heaven

Anyways I gave those teachers a big thumbs down when I drove by today. Why should they be getting a raise when there is a moretorium on raises in the public sector in this province. They are among the top 3 or so for pay in the country. And, the strike is ILLEGAL. I might have more sympathy if it was legal. And as you guys said. 8-3, 10 months a year.

I am not a big fan of unions, I think promotions and raises should be a result of merit, not seniority.
 
^exactly. An illegal strike means no right to strike at all, and that's not usually how it works in a democracy and not very fair. I agree that teachers get paid pretty well, but you'd have to be blind not to realize class sizes are getting bigger every year, and big classes are not as good to learn in, especially with disabled kids that can't learn or will just mess around the whole time. And teaching involves preparing your course, so it's quite a bit of work other than just teaching in a classroom.
 
Fair enough, I do see the part about class sizes definitly. If you add some time for prep/marking, and make thier hours to 8 square hours a day, then they still probably only work 10 months a year.

Conclusion: I sympathize with the class size issue. But I am against only the pay increase and mainly the illegal strike. Plus I dont like unions.

Holy crap, you are so uninformed. Teachers have been working without a contract for almost 2 years, because the government won't negotiate with them. It's not that the government won't negotiate for all the reasons- they won't even sit down long enough to resolve ONE. The working conditions of a teacher in b.c. are fucking terrible. These are the people that go to school for 6 or so years, to teach YOUR KIDS. No one goes into teaching for money, it's for the benefit of everyone. They can't teach the way things are. My dad for example, is trying to teach a grade 5/6 SPLIT class of 31 students along with 3 special needs kids in his class. You are an ignorant fuck if you think that children can get a proper education with that many people in one class. It's just impossible to learn effectively with restrictions like that.

Another thing, is teachers aren't trying to make more money than everyone else. They're trying to be treated fairly. They haven't recieved a pay raise in the last 10 years that's a signifigant reflection of the obvious matter of inflation that's occuring. The vast majority of teachers I know work much more than 8-3. You have to take into account the extra marking they do, the basic classroom upkeep, parent-teacher conferences, not to mention hordes of extra curricular activities and involvement with administration.

Christ, I can't believe some people are so misinformed about what is being dealt with. Do your fucking research before you voice your opinions so boisterously, and realize that the matters the teachers are fighting for are almost completely for the benefit of you and your children.
 
teachers in alberta get paid something like 12 percent more then bc teachers and the cost of living in bc way more
 
on thursday the suprem court will make there ruling on how much they will fine the teachers every day. this will be the deciding factor on how long hte strike goes for.
 
^The Canadian Teachers Federation made a statement that said they will not let money be a deciding factor in this strike i.e. they're going to chip in whatever necessary to ensure the matters get dealt with.
 
i have two provincials this semester..... ones history, and the other is english...... what the fuck! this strike licks anus for me!
 
Dood I've already graduated but my lil sis is gettin affected by this shit. Me and a few of my boys drove by one of the School District buildings in POCO yesterday and threw eggs and bricks at them, fuckin waving to the crowd asking for support. Those dumb cock suckers signed on the agreement, now honor it, they get paid well and collect UI all summer, suck it up and go back to work you fucking tool's.

I hated all my teachers except for my football coach. Now I hate them even more. Except for the football coach.
 
K look your taking the wrong action dont direct anger at me. And do not question my inteligence. All I can take into account in a situation like this is the fact that innocent children are being held hostage.

The teachers union is now in a legal situation, and the government can not negotiate with them. Do not take your resentment at either side out on me.

Ha you remind me of one of the bureaucratic individuals involved in this situation. Do you not understand the fact that because the teachers have walked off the job illegally, they have handcuffed themselves? The government could not even begin to negotiate due to the fact that the the teacher union has breached the Candian Criminal Code? There is nothing that can be done until they go back? Has simple fact nullified any mental ability in your head that has you resolved to pointing the finger and making farm animal sounds? Honestly grow up.
 
im from bc but im on exchange now so the more school you guys at home miss the less i miss wich is nice being as i'v already taken nearly two mounths off my grad year.. i just hope it doesnt drag on to long after i get back or im fucked i dont even know what classes im in yet

hey guess what? THEY DIDN'T SIGN THE AGREEMENT, IT WAS IMPOSED BY THE BC LIBERAL FUCKHEADS IN OFFICE. and they don't collect EI all summer u fucking idiot.
