I went to high school with a girl who has a mental disability and just stood up to the world and posted an 8 minute video of how it has impacted her, how she supports the "Spread the word to end the word" campaign (http://www.r-word.org/Default.aspx) and how it hurts her and others when its used, and how people used to call her that to her face. So no, there are other ways to describe disabilities and handicaps without calling them that word, because it's a fucking insult to them and I promise you it's something they never forget.

Do whatever the hell you want around your friends, but understand that it's something that really hurts a lot of incredible disabled individuals, and people who stand up for those people are not "Whiny Fucks".

that's all well and good, but it doesn't make sense to me. This isn't like "faggot" where the word was adopted with harmful intent. Mentally retarded is a scientifically accurate description of someone who is developmentally disabled. I understand that its harmful to people and that's why I don't use it. It's a bit ridiculous in my opinion though because it's the victimization of a completely accurate term. It's like campaigning to end the use of the word "gay". When describing a homosexual with no malicious intent....it's acceptable and correct.

Why are you so set on using this word? Sure, there are scientific reasons to still use it, but otherwise, why are you so committed to being a dick? There are enough assholes in the world, don't be one of them.
