Taos Sucks

I just returned from my trip to Copper to see the US Freeskiing Open. The US Open was very sick by the way. Anyways, after being in Copper, I started to compare it to my own resort, Taos Ski Valley.

Copper has a sick terrain park. Not as good as Keystone's terrain park, but it was fun indeed. I enjoyed Copper's rail gardens and features in the Catalyist park. Catalyist park is very fluid and fun.

Taos, on the other hand, has the worst terrain park that I have ever skied on. It took the managenment five months to make up their minds on the park, and two days to build it. Something is not right here. First off, our jumps suck a left nut. There is no flow in these jumps. They are crooked and not set up right. The first jump is probably a 20 foot gap. The second jump is a 15 foot gap to a flat landing. Your speed has to be just right or you will either overshoot or knuckle. The third and final jump is a another 20 foot gap. It has the best landing out of all the features in the park. But from the second jump to the third you have to carve right to hit the third jump, because the jumps are not aligned. The rails and boxes at Taos are terrible. The lips onto the features are above them. So you launch onto the box or rail and land flat on it. Another thing about the boxes and rails is that some of them are crooked. The terrain park is built for pussies and dumbass'.

A good thing about Taos is that we have the steeps. Taos' terrain is great. But the greatness of our terrain does depend on our snowfall amounts. When there is no snow in Taos, there is nothing to do. When there is no snow in Copper, they have a great terrain park to jib in. They even have a superpipe. Taos doesn't even have a quarterpipe! The nearest halfpipe to Taos is at a small resort 40 minutes away called Angel Fire. They're halfpipe is flat and is hard to carry speed in. But it is better then nothing.

I look at all the good skiers from other resorts and compare them to me. Maybe if we had the same features as they do, I would be a lot better of a skier then I am now.

One thing that I took for granted was lift lines. Copper's long lift lines have open my eyes and made me realize how cool it is to live in a small resort. I love getting my pass checked and getting on the lift in less than a minute. But the short lift lines in Taos are canceled by the long lift rides up the mountain. It takes about 20 minutes to get from the bottom of the mountain to the top.

Taos has no activities for the youth. Taos is all about the rich old people. Taos holds its annual stupid wine festivals that nobody cares about. Where are the movie premieres? Where are the competitions? Where are the rail jams? I can tell you where they are not. They are not in Taos. Nothing is in Taos.

The shops in Taos are not that great. They dont have the stuff you need. There is no variety in the shops. I have to order all my stuff from the internet because none of the shops in Taos have it. Thank you www.jibij.com for saving my ski season. Josh Bryant your the man. But the shops do help out the local teams a little by providing us discounts on stuff. Us poor ski bums really appreciate those 15% discounts.

Taos doesn't understand the evolution of skiing. It is stuck in the hot-dogging days of skiing and it cant shift gears to the newschool age of skiing. When will Taos finally shift, no one knows. Maybe Taos will change when Mickey Blake is out of his seat of power. We need new management. That new management probably wont come until I am out of this place and somewhere where the skiing is actually progressing.

You sound like all you're whining about is a not so great park. Taos has plenty of sick terrain that it sounds like you are missing out on. Get out of the park for a day then reconsider this thread.

Dude I was in taos a week ago, and it was a ton of fun, they got a bunch of snow, no one was there, and there's a bunch of steep terrain. Also, no snowboarders. Dispite the lack of a park Taos is far from sucking.

robbie you whine too much and there is a big flaw in this thread. Look at what you wrote, you make the statement that "Taos Sucks" implying that all of Taos sucks and then you only provide one reason it sucks and disregard everything we have.

this is Ski Roundtop, PA:

so you think Taos sucks?

Perhaps a better title for this thread would be something way more specific, be careful what you write, i will NOT let you jinx us

i dont know if you realize that we just got 20" and the ridge is open from twin trees to wonder bowl

yeah taos is absolute tits, and if you want to hit a nice jump then go build one and get creative

dude. at least you get snow and you have a park. some people dont have a park. i dont get snow cause right now its about 20 below and about to get colder weve had 6 inches all season.. kinda blows

Having good steeps is far more important than having a good park. However, I do understand your frustration. The management really should do a better job with their park.

I hear you. Alyeska's terrain park is probably worse than Taos's, and they have yet to make the pipe. But the steeps and pow here are sick. I think when it comes to smaller, big-mountain type resorts (Alyeska, Taos, Kirkwood, etc.), the better the steeps and pow, the worse the terrain park. I dunno, maybe the resort have to focus on avy-proofing their terrain.

Anyhow, I skied one day at Taos and thought it was awesome. You've got great snow, a great fall-line, and some good steeps. Yeah, it's a bit Aspeny, but, all in all, it's a quality place. And New Mex Mex kicks ass.

i always got the idea that it was kinda like Mad River Glen, where the main group is a bunch of old crusty, arrogant, skier, (but taos) probably is more upsacle, and like Mad River, when it snows it is good when it doesnt, it sucks,

We get it already. People who ski at good resorts should never ever complain about anything because [cue tragic violin music] there are people whose only nearby ski resort is _______ [fill in blank with some shitty Midwestern/ Northeastern/ Southeastern hill] that only have one rope tow, a 10' vertical drop, and refridgerator-produced ice cubes for snow.

if i lived out west, all i would ski is backcountry

and thats what im planning on doing, one day

The grass is always greener on the other side I guess...sometimes when you grow up out West and can ski any run on the mountain with ease by the time you are 6 you get sick off steeps and want a better park.

mani would hate to live at this mountain.. stop bitching and be greatful for what you have.

I feel so bad for you

please take a look at that PA picture and think about what you just said...

...and then realize how lucky you are, thankyou.

Yes I am grateful for what I have. But, seriously Taos is not that great. Compared to Colorado's resorts, Taos is really not that great. And that is what I am saying.

quite recent though we prolly have maybe a 20inch base now. but you have nothing to complain about. Try living on the east coast where the ski season didnt start until a couple weeks ago. At least you have a terrain park. Quit bitching and be thankful you have a real mountain to at least ski on.

no, it was when it snowed a shit ton. which, comparatively it doesnt really anymore, except this season, this season is really good i love it im not complaining. But last season uuuggghh terrible

taos is fucking dank, of any resort right now that i havent been to that i want to ski , its taos. the scenery looks absolutely stunning, I think i want to retire there too. The terrain looks so much better than anything at steamboat, where i am currently based. I would take taos over some bullshit cookie cutter mc corporate ski resort like keystone or breck that are full of middle class texan gapers.

taos has class.

in all fairness, i don't think the moving tectonic plates underneath that mountain range has changed the terrain in 5-10 years. try again in millions of years

Lulz. I have to agree with you man, it's pretty hard to get in to ski park if you're from New Mexico. Santa Fe's idea of a park is... lacking. I'm headed up tomorrow for the first time this season to see if it sucks as ridiculously hard as it did last year.

I can drop a shit and it would more resemble a jump than the so called "tables" of last year.

anything to keep the jiblets away.

I love ski areas that only have icy double chairs that are easy to fall off of.

I also love ski areas that don't think they need to put bamboo next to every single rock on the mountain.

I also love ski areas that require beacon probe shovel partner to ride certain lifts or have a open gate policy as long as you have those things.

I understand that the park there sucks, and it is nice to have some decent park stuff for early or late season when the good terrain isn't open.

But that mountain is fucking sick. You've got it better there than most of us. Be happy.

Its too late in the season for belleayre to throw a park together. Hunter actually has a decent little park setup.

that wasn't the point, it doesnt snow nearly as much as it did back then.

i wasn't complaining, i love taos, i was just defending the other side of the argument or the sake of it.

i'm not trying to prove anything to anyone. i,seemingly unlike many of you, dont think that there is only one side of this.

ahhh...poor kid

try skiing onthe east coast were it rains half the winter and good snow storms melt away in like a week and try skiing at a place were glades dont get enough snow and u cant go in them much and u ski groomers allllllllllllllll day and it gets boring and its way to easy...but i must say strattons park is sick lol sooo many sick features

I looked up taos and came across this.. It like 2am right now so i didn't read the whole thing, but what i did read has me laughing my ass off.

Its new mexico dude, i could give you so many reasons why the parks not as good. ski outside the park and youd think differently of copper
