Tanner Hall Quits Competing

This is of his interview on the new Armada site.. Is Tanner the Terje of freeskiing?

"The Olympics is a crazy thing. My views have definitely

changed through the time I’ve been dealing with the whole process.

Olympics is a beast. Good luck to everyone that goes there, but I’m

stoked on my mission and I’m stoked to ski with my friends and link up

with very special people in BC and Alaska and share an awesome

experience.

I feel like I’m free now with my decision not to return to

contests and move forward with media type stuff and trying to get out to

Alaska and BC a lot more. I want to keep progressing the level of my

skiing with pillows, AK, BC booters, park skiing, rails – whatever it

is, I just want to go out and ski and have fun and progress myself. I

don’t want to be pressured to go and throw down a run and just follow a

circus show the whole time.

I respect his decision, but I wish he would have mentioned something along the lines of everyone being so good, that the commitment he would have to have shown to be in the running for medals was not something he was prepared to do.

This is just Tanner realizing that he cant compete anymore. People are too good and he is old and beat up.

^ even though he had a spot on the podium that comp after redbull dropped him...

I think the competing made him a bit fucked in the head because he's so obsessive, glad to hear he'll be dropping more media.

I would also like to add that Terje was absolutely dominating comps when he boycotted the Olympics, he pretty much walked away from a certain gold. Tanner is not. So no, Tanner isn't the new Terje.

It is too bad to see one of the last people from the sort of first wave move on from competing. He won his first X Games medal back in 2001, it definitely was a good run. I hope he gets back to making movies with CP and we get something like "Believe" or "The Massive" down the road.

He is def past his prime but still can ride well and have fun doing it. He should have quit competing a long time ago(though he did?...)

Respect out to him though and the group of old guys who made sking what it is today:

T.Hall

Greg Tuffelmire

Joe Vallone

JF Cusson

Nick Mercon

Glenn Plake

C.R.J(rip)

JP Auclair(spelling??)still rips

Omar Otte

The_Polock

Many others as well.

Everyone on this list is from the days when skiers still got their passes ripped for riding thru the "Snowboard Park". Old boys

I saw him tweet a couple days ago that he's working with Decker on some sort of edit/short film. Should be awesome

Being from Wisconsin I must correct you, Brett Favre...not that you should give a shit.

However, yes I do believe that Tanner is unable to compete with the newer generation of skiers. Don't get me wrong, he had one hell of a run, but he didn't have much of a chance of going to the Olympics (for team America at least hahaha).

To add to that Terje was everyone's favorite for the gold medal, but chose not to compete because he did not agree that the FIS should be in charge of snowboarding at the Olympics. At this point the ISF (International Snowboard Federation) existed and was progressing halfpipe riding, yet the IOC decided that the FIS should run the program. Terje believed the IOC was a mob style organisation taking back handers to further their own personal agendas who would not make decisions with best interests of snowboarding at heart. He practically boycotted a medal on principle...

So nope T.Hall isn't the new Terje because according to this interview he's not giving up competition for any other reason than he wants to focus on other elements of skiing. Good for Tanner on choosing a new direction but wrong comparison.

because he wouldnt podium. props for stepping down tanner and focusing on your insane backcountry game! keep progressing where you are happy and putting out edits and movie parts for us to admire!

i don't know about not being able to get a medal. tanner for sure has a top two or three run if we take away doubles and the man works harder then anybody else in the game, n he has all the dubs on tramps n shit so im sure he could throw some mad pipe dubs if he wanted too. Im not saying that he would be the favorite, but without any further injurys or setbacks he could deff compete on their level. DOn't matter now though i just looking forward to seeing more vids

crazy looking at this list and think of how BIG they were with such little exposure compared to taday. Kids today probably know 3-4 people from this list.

Not many know how sick Tuffy and Cusson were

I'd rather watch Tanner slay BC booters and pillows anyway...

Never actually gave a fuck about pipe and olympics, so yay!

Quitting comps, failed the drug test and isn't allowed to compete in the Olympics... Same difference

bittersweet. It'll be good seeing him focus on bc and media projects. Kind of a bummer since he worked so hard early in his career to make the Olympics a reality. Too bad it didnt happen earlier for the Vancouver games.

Of course hes done with the comp scene. I would of been done long ago with it too if I knew the direction it was going in.

I respected his decision to stop competing until this. It seems like he's just angry and since he can't compete at the level he used to compete at, he's kind of blaming the contest scene and insulting the whole structure. Don't hate the game, hate the player. And in no way do I mean to insult Tanner, it's just that he has to drop his ego a little bit and stop insulting people and things.

Tanner is still one of the best out, and the fact that he wants to progress for himself shows how much just skiing means to him. If your only in it for the podium finishes i have no respect for you. What Tanner does in the BC is absolutely fucked. He rides BC like you guys ride parks, insane. Still one of the best.

He still is just pissed he didnt make the olympic team and is pouting. He'll be competing again when ever he gets over it. Dude needs to grow up.

Respect! He has been at the top of every discipline freesking has to offer. Gold in Pipe Gold in Slope and by far one of the best bc riders still at this point. Good for him. Nothing but respect for someone who has brought our sport to where it is today.

You've got to be fucking kidding me. He's a grown ass man who has been to hell and back battling from not one, but two massive injuries. He has made a personal decision to ski what he wants, where he wants, and how he wants. I'm personally stoked he's healthy and happy, and we wish T the best.

Having Anger Towards Everyone Reaching Success = HATERS

I'd say its silly to ignore the possibility that Tanner gave up on the Olympics. Its silly to ignore the fact that yes, maybe he is past his prime and not good enough to huck crazy meat with the kids these days.

I can see that side of the debate. The results sure show it thus far.

Of course, I could snap right now and debate the fuck out of anyone stating that Tanner is the man with unlimited focus and drive, the guy that could pull of just this kind of miracle, and the guy who would be scrubbing results right now just to fuck with the minds of all the other competitors, fuck off from the USA team, qualify alone and win the whole fucking thing.

I could debate that and I could be right.

However.... honestly I'm fucking stoked that I never get to know the truth. All that drive, all that passion and all that talent... stuck in a stunt ditch trying to woo the 'average public' into being stoked on some 'newfangled whirlybirds' on nightime NBC?

Fuck that shit... why should they get Tanner's golden years and not us?

Link this fucker up with some filmers, tell him to never compete again and just go the fuck out there and produce us some absolutely mind-boggling film that I can watch repeatedly until I burn a hole in the internet. Give me some creativity. Give me innovation.

Give me the Tanner I love.

What would we the skiing community get out of him from winning the Olympics? Some legit doubles, with just enough huck to score points but definitely not enough style to impress?

Fuck that.

So I say damn the argument. Whether you think Tanner could have won or not is irrelevant... be thankful that he is choosing not to.

Now Mr. Hall - get the fuck out there and give us some video of you doing awesome, fun creative shit with your rad buddies and we can all be happy as fuck together.

Signed,

The Internet.

Him suffering two massive injuries does not make him mature... he trolls kids on facebook and insists on using all caps when ever he types. I think your forgetting about when he called out all the people on the olympic team when he found out he didnt make it. That didnt seem like something "a grown as man" would do. Yeah hes a pretty damn good skier, doesnt give him an excuse to start shit with the people representing his country at the olympics. He should have been supporting them but instead he decided to be butt hurt and call them out and apparently he still isnt over it. Dont tell me his decision to stop comp skiing isnt related to him not making the olympic team. You'd have to be blind to not see that. And dont call me a hater because im giving you the harsh truth about one of your idols.

Haha I saw this too the day the new website came out, I was wondering about it. I wish he would've tried to compete just this one last year, but oh well pow>everything.
