Tanner Hall: Cyber Bully

I'd say it's mostly people just spending time on the site -- whether or not they'd like to admit it haha.

I personally can't think of a single instance I thought it was necessary to bring a thread / comment to someones attention. I did however try really hard to convince Matt to comment on the pursuit campaign... but that's a whole other can of worms / he was already following the news article and thread.

You guys should ask for the IP/Usernames of all pros featured on their sponsors webpages and do a big infographic on how many pros post, lurk, how long they're on NS blah blah all that. Do an infographic for the whole of NS fr everything

lol, t hall might be not afraid to talk shit and ''stir up the pot'' but he sure as hell can't take any shit talking directed towards him.

like the LOS post on fb quoted earlier in this thread, Lolo favre made a JOKE, not something i would even qualify as shit talking, and tanner goes bananas and tells him he won't be friends with him anymore. HOW RETARDED IS THAT? is he in third grade or something?

ANyway it's always good entertainment when t-hall speaks his mind, so no need to stop!!!!!!!

We actually probably already have all that info! But yes, I think that would make a super interesting / funny / revealing data set.

IP checks and tracking? sounds like a great way to scare industry people away from the site

we'll file this under "retarded ideas that should never be used"

Why would it scare people away? It's not like it's publicly available information -- just the staff have access to it. And anyways, the "Members Online" sidebar shows how often someone is online. And honestly, if someone is "scared" that Doug and I know they browse Newschoolers... well let's just say they have bigger problems to deal with.

We've had IP checks for a long time now, and they wont' be going anywhere anytime soon. They are almost integral with dealing with a lot of issues such as:

- IP banning spammers / trolls / etc.

- Regulating upvotes / downvotes

- Fixing commonly reported bugs

- Retrieving stolen llama heads

- Dealing with more serious issues such as threats or illegal activity

The fact that we've had them in place for a while and that most people have no idea clearly shows we're not abusing them...

This thread is pure gold.

It really brings out TANNERS true colors. He's really INSPIRING! I'm so INSPIRED now I think I'm going to go talk shit to people in my industry of employment. INSPIRED THANKS TANNER!

I'm sure the Rastafarian's are so proud to have you trying to be apart of their community, they love cyber bullying, and talking shit about other Rastafarians.

Or they could simply douche their vaginas. I'm shocked to find out you deal with email complaints to that extent. This generation is so fucking entitled it makes me want to watch endless Kenny Powers content just to make up for it and restore the balance.

that's all well and good assuming you guys don't abuse the system

the part in his post about tracking IPs and actively gathering that information for publishing is what im saying will scare people off.

doing that could not possibly help maintain industry folk posting here. some don't hide who they are at all but many do to varying extents. some you just need to know that that's their name, some use aliases, etc etc

anyway, keeping track of IPs is hardly a guarantee of exactitude when multiple people use the same IP all the time. e.g. another NSer who almost always lurks uses the same IP as I do sometimes

it's just an idea that has a terrible risk/reward ratio

Yeah, we definitely don't go around actively searching -- and we would never publish that type of information without prior consent. In my post I simply said it would be an interesting data set.

Basically it's just a tool we use to keep the site running -- you'd be surprised at how much shit gets cleaned up in the forums.

With that being said, I know sooner or later someone is going to cross the line and I'm just going to lose it and publicly out them.

i only wish i looked a fraction as cool as that gentlemen.

but honestly, is it weird that i'm not ashamed i probably would win that tally? i leave it logged in on my work computer all day and lurk whenever possible. i just fucking love this place.

I don't think she really had choice on how the ad was shot. So don't jump to conclusions on her, blame the ad company tanner. But then again, her fault for taking money for a fake shoot.

oh yeah don't get me wrong man, i'm not saying anything negative about the administrative things you guys do, you guys mostly kill it

i just thought that one idea was stupid, that's all

Yeah, it's pretty ridiculous... with that being said, I'd say 95% of them are super easy to deal with and go something like this:

"hey wtf newschoolers you guys are gay unban me" -banned member

"what's your username?" -me

"[username]" -banned member

"It seems like you were banned for [x] amount of days for [insert clearly bannable offence here]. At this point in time I see no reason why I should lift the ban. Thanks for your time and hopefully you can take something away from this." -me

On the other hand, the other 5% do require a bit of legwork, and can often times end up being a mistake made on a mod's behalf.

Things I learned from this thread

1) Tanner is still a ski boss and is still awesome on the internet, because lets be honest who wants to hear people say the right thing on the internet.

2) Kids actually still think it is funny to give eheath shit. The only thing less original than hating on eheath is calling Steve an am. or calling him Steve Stept.

3) Loganimlach is still one of the best orange names out. See him post in troll threads and real threads a like, always on point.

4) I still love NS, especially now that Bishop is all over the forums.

Now Carry on bitching to Mousseau even though he is more stoked on skiing than you and you probably deserved that ban.

Did no one else find this shit hilarious? Hahahaha!

As Mousseau already said, skiing has a lot of people that talk shit behind people's back, or are afraid to step on toes because the industry is so small. Everyone is afraid to actually give real criticism. It's one of the reasons why we have repetitive ski movies, and get trapped in stupid trends (in terms of skiing style, features, contests, and outerwear) for years. Have you ever read a negative published review of anything in skiing? Of course not. Are there shitty products? Of course.

PROPS TO YOU TANNER FOR SPEAKING YOUR MIND DUDE.

That all said, those of you talking shit on that photo are a bit disillusioned. Do you actually think they're going to CGI her over a jump or some shit? No. It's going to be used in some sort of McDonalds, Coca Cola, Visa or CBC ad where there will be skiers, snowboarders, curlers and shit spinning across a white screen with a logo blasted between them. They're not going to use real footage for something like that.

+k thankss, google translator must have been off

anyway what Roz is doing definitely looks goofy, but she probably knows that and has her reasons for doing it.

tanner is a legend and is being exposed to a changing ski community that he helped shape, i'm sure it's a trip to wake up everyday and see how skiing has changed since the old days and he's probably just concerned with the direction of skiing in the future.

Exactly. It's an advertising shot for a composite. You can't light someone on location like you would in the studio. A similar motocross studio shot placed highly in this year's Illume comp. I'd be very very surprised if this isn't for a comporate ad, so shooting like this is fair game. Hating on the shot & setup itself isn't cool. The chick claiming that it looks like a trick she can't do? Well if that's true then that's another issue and was a silly comment on her part.

Angus is in the middle of a 25-30 hour drive at the moment by the way. Maybe longer if he has to take breaks to cry about being bullied.

Love and hate represent at least two differing opinions. More opinions lead to more understanding. More understanding leads to a better ski community.

Well he does it like a 12 year old, which is great for this site but if you're going to be a "ski boss" perhaps you should start acting like someone who can at least legally purchase cigarettes.

I've told this before, but I'm gonna share with you the only dialogue I have ever had with Tanner Hall:

Me: "Hey man, Tanner, why do you always post in all caps?"

Tanner: "To get my fucking point across"
