Tamron 18-270?

I was turned towards this lens by a great photographer who said I should look at this in place of the 18-135 kit lens on a Canon 60D. Looks pretty nice too. Is this like the 17-50 where I should go with the non vc? It'd probably be more for photos as I would purchase some wide angles for filming.
