I don't have it but from what I've read it's one of the most used lenses for edits on newschoolers. That and the 11-16. I've seen it for 300 and lower on ebay and craigslist for good condition so I don't think it's worth 500.

Wouldn't be the best choice for a glidecam specific lens. I love my Tamron but shoot about 90% tripod with it and 10% glidecam. You'll probably want something wider on your glidecam, but that's also subjective. I think I bought my Tamron used on here for some price between $400 and $450, but that was also two years ago...

The tamron 17-50 can be found for $300 maybe $350 (non vc version) and its fun to use on a glidecam, at 17 its a good length for following jumps but you'll find it a bit tight for following rails. This is why I used a 11-16 for my glidecam 90% of the time and shoot rails at 11mm and jumps at 16mm.

I'd recommend a different lens FIRST like the tokina 11-16 but THEN definitely buy a 17-50 its a great lens.

For any purchase, check out fredmiranda. The deals there are great. KEH is good too as long as you do your research (or they have a sale). I have bought from them before, but some stuff does seem to be a little bit more expensive lately. With that said, BGN on keh is better than open box from most places, so something to consider.

Lastly, to answer your original question, $500 is approaching double what I would pay for a 17-50. It is a good lens, but you should be able to pick one up for $300, if not less (thought I saw some on here under $300 a few months ago).
