Talking to people about skiing who dont ski.

Ive had this experience multiple times in my life, and i must say, it is one of the most irritating things. Ok so not everybody skis, but when i have to explain to them the concepts of the sickest sport on earth, i often feel like i am succumbing to their level. anyone else feel the same?

not hating, but i do thins on a daily basis, kids didn't really know i skied at my school until this year, mostly because i knew they would ask me stupid questions. Everyone thinks im sponsored because i have my facebook picture of me grinding a handrail.

i know what you mean! it is so difficult to describe how truly amazing skiing is to people who have never done it before. they just dont get how a sport can bring someone that much joy as skiing does for me! there is just something about the mountains that cant be explained

That is exactly how i read i too! And now i'm all distracted...thinking about penis...

Where was i?

I totally agree! It's so hard to explain what skiing is. And then they're like "Oh yeah, i get it" and youre like "No. No you dont."

People usually just say its stupid and too expensive to me. I just tell them don't know it till you've tried it. I've converted 2 of those naysayers and I'm working on 1 more.

Usually I just tell them that I do all the stuff snowboarders do but on skis. And they ask if I can snowboard, and I say yes... not that hard to learn, did it in 2 runs. And they ask why I dont do that, and I just tell them that skiing is 10x more badass

This. People are like, are you ever gonna learn to board? I learnt to board first, then converted when I was 9, and Im never going back.

And I especially hate having to explain what butters and jiberish and newschoolers is, cause they just stare dumbly at me as if I was speaking fucking jiberish!

I have an After Dark poster in my dorm room and some chick was asking if it was a horror movie, jeeeez

I get the snowboard thing from those who don't know all the time too. "are you ever gonna try snowboarding or does that scare you?" or "I know someone who snowboards and that's tough." or "when ya get really good, you eventually snowboard right?". Shits annoying as hell. I explain to them I snowboarded for two years until ski equipment progressed to my style of skiing then I went back. (twin tips, etc). They just don't get it and follow with, "so snowboarding was just too difficult?". I try to explain to them that in the upper tiers of freeriding, skiing is actually more technical and difficult due to TWO skis, poles, etc.. I also explain that alot of my ski buddies started out snowboarding. They still don't get it. "but Shaun white snowboards right?", is about the time I give up and change the subject.

i feel like my friends think all i talk about is skiing. well those friends that dont ski at least...

Almost all my friends ski, and i'm pretty sure it's because most of the time i'm thinking about skiing. When i get around people that aren't into winter sports I legit feel out of place because it's always in the back of my head. so when i do get around people that shred i have so much more to talk about and can actually relate to things they're saying because it's not just something to talk about it's my life

I don't talk to people about skiing who don't ski, unless it comes up in conversation. It kind of alienates those who don't ski...and gives you a niche group of friends if it's all you talk about.

been through it, over it. there are more interesting things out there to talk about. only way to share the joy is to just go skiing and experience it with others.

I wish more of my friends skied. Just a couple of snowboarders at my school who you can talk skiing and boarding with. And I agree that it´s hard to talk to nonskiiers sometimes... Iy´s always in the back of my head like you said.

Yeah I'm literally the only person in my school who skis and there's even only 2-3 snowboarders. I just don't bring it up, people here just can't grasp the concept. It sucks when I'm stoked on something I did and can't really share with anyone.

I do a handrail on a ski trip and get God treatment from my gaper friends. I am literally the only person in my school that skis park and there is probably only 3 snowboarders I can hold a conversation with about park skiing and snowboarding with. My school is like Hickville USA, everywhere I look i see confederate flags and chewing tobacco. I think I could tell them I was going to the X Games and they would believe me.

i hate the kids at my school who see me skiing on their first day of snowboarding, and tell me how much cooler snowboarding is. it happens about once a month in the winter months and is annoying as hell. im basically just like

In the 1000+ members of my uni snowsports club i am the only "newschool" skier. Sure there are others who ski park and a bunch who are alot more into freeriding but it just sucks that i watch something on here or a comp and there isnt anybody else who really gives a shit. 90% of the people in the club are gapers and are in the club for the week/weekend trips and the drinking culture. 5% are racers and kind of get the whole enjoyment of skiing idea. The other 5% are the park and freeriders who i am closest to but i get shunned a little as they are stuck in the traditional sense of skiing and just dont accept its the future of the sport. This is why im on the forums and all over the edits all the time as its the only time i really get a chance to connect to people who understand it. Dont even get me started on what everybody else thinks i do. Im pretty sure people think im pro just because i did a lincoln on the euro x kicker and its my fb cover photo.

and like put a new picture to fb, where i'm with skis and that and the comments are like "you are cute" or "i like" .. that's sad, i'd like to have "sweet shit man, keepin' it steezy" or smth. In my friends, there are like some snowboarders, who rides once a week and i'm like that dude, who calls every day "yo, let's go riding" and talking about skiing... well i have given up already because nobody really doesn't care what i'm sayn'

This is usually the red flag for me to stop trying.

Another favorite is "how do they still have snow"

I have come to the conclusion that people who hate on it or peoples interest in general, just don't have a passion for anything in their life other than watching reality TV shows on the idiot box all day.

I personally could care less about what passion someone has, but have a passion for something and work hard. I don't know about anyone else, but I enjoy talking to anyone about what their passion is even if it is not skiing. Then I am not as ignorant about their interest, but that is just me. The attitude of people who have a true passion for something whether it be yoga, ice skating, or painting is much different than those who don't.

I never realised newschool terminology can be so complex until I had to explain it to my non skiing friend. AND THEY KEEP SAYING THEY UNDERSTAND WHEN THEY TRULY DONT!

Sometimes when i go in for lunch and i meet someone (like a friends friend ect ) will ask me if i snowboard. And i say no. And then they say "oh well you look like a snowboarder to me" :/

My roommate is the worst. I live with the kid so skiing comes up a lot and he always feels the need to remind me that "Snowboarding is cooler, and my friend who lives in the Alps agrees!" Apparently one of his friends here at school came from Italy so her opinion is automatically a fact since her mountains are bigger than ours.

Pisses me off. Kid has never stepped foot into a board or skis yet insists that snowboarding is somehow better. My friend who snowboards even laughs at him.

Theres a bunch of people at my school who, just not very well.

I have 1 friend that skis park and that's it, all of my friends who ski get that its a fun thing to do and they appreciate it but I wouldn't be able to have a serious conversation about skiing with them.

so I'm all like

When ever I tell people I freeski. I always feel like they see me doing this....
