Tales of the early years of newschool skiing

Been watching all the Level 1 movies and it brought back a lot of memories of skiing back when it was all new and fresh and people were pushing the sport in crazy ways.

Here are somethings that were different back then.

Getting kicked out of the park and getting a ticket or pass pulled for being in there. Parks use to be snowboard only and if you were caught with skis in the park it was a big deal. It didn't last to long though but it sucked while it did.

Trying to have skis center mounted. Trying to talk a shop guy into mount a ski dead center was difficult, a few times I talked them into doing it only to show up to pick up my skis to see that they mounted them in the traditional point. Then again telling them no I want these mounted dead center. They never offered new skis either for their mess up because they thought skis with a center mount would be unskiable.

Seeing other twins on the slope. You would legit get excited when you saw someone else with twin tips and ski over to talk to them and end up skiing together.

Freeze magazine was the best thing at the time to show what was happening in the ski world.

Sketchy parks, when you could get in the parks they were terrible. Jumps with no landing, messy halfpipes and rails that were either to tall to get onto or had jumps that were taller than the rails.

Getting chased down and yelled at by patrol for skiing backwards. More than once we had to prove we were in control while skiing backwards so we could keep our tickets.

Ha! great post. I still have all my VHS tapes for the early park videos. Sessions 1242, area 51, etc..

Getting kicked out of the park and getting a ticket or pass pulled for being in there. Parks use to be snowboard only and if you were caught with skis in the park it was a big deal. It didn't last to long though but it sucked while it did.

SO much this. Bromley and Jiminy Peak use to kick me out. "the tails of your skis will hurt the halfpipe." I had the dynastar concepts at the time and they would then go and say "only skiblades" are allowed. I'd point to the turned up tail and be told they were too long.

Trying to have skis center mounted. Trying to talk a shop guy into mount a ski dead center was difficult, a few times I talked them into doing it only to show up to pick up my skis to see that they mounted them in the traditional point.

I had this happen twice. I asked for +6cm from the recommended line and got my skis mounted at recommended and my DIN at 6.... This is where i learned to sharpie the ski where i wanted and dry an arrow with the words "Boot Center Here"

Freeze magazine was the best thing at the time to show what was happening in the ski world.

Still have my copies.

Learned my lesson standing at the top of the snowboard park getting an ear full instead stood uphill a ways and watched till the right moment then went thru, damn they'd get pissed. Somewhere is a box of my old video collection like 13, clay pigeons, parental advisory, chapter 3 and others. Cant wait to find them.

For real, if you saw someone with twin tips you were instant homies. And if you saw someone with lines they were your idol because the tip and tail were the same height.

Lol, wow!! This was so true!

Getting chased down, sworn at, and or getting the boot for skiing the pipe at gore. The parks were hilariously sketchy sometimes places.

Do you have any wild stories from being part of Roundtop Riders?

Jiminy Peak use to kick me out.

back in 2005 jiminy used to chase me into the base area for throwing casual backflips. Bromley was a great ski area, they let the cat tracks and side hits exist.

I second Freeze magazine being the best thing ever. I remember being in Jr high and checking out the Liftie of the month etc.

Here are some other things I remember:

All your friends would ask you when you are going to switch to snowboarding and would look confused that you are still skiing like that was some lame old thing your Dad did.

There were no ski specific apparel brands so standard gear would be a generic ski helmet, 686 or Burton Jacket and generic black snow pants.

The first time you put on twin tips and skied switch was like this crazy revelation and people would literally stare at you.

Everyone and their brother watched the newest Warren Miller film to kick off the ski season and Glenn Plake would always do something crazy.

Jonny Moseley Mad Trix was a horrible game but nobody cared because it was awesome.

Shane McConkey was basically your crazy uncle you looked up to and was your hero. When he mounted water skis and hit AK lines it was the most insane thing in the world.

How much older skiers hated Tanner Hall because of his 'Gorilla Stance'.

Back then it was rare to see anyone filming. There was no GoPro or phone video so if you wanted to film you had to bring the family camcorder and half the time it would crap out from the cold.

It seemed like in your crew one guy would have 1080s with the robot topsheet, one guy had Rossi Scratchs with Freddie Kruger and the other guy had early Armadas. The Armada guy couldnt help but always kinda think he was hot shit because that was Tanner Hall's ski.

Not being able to ride the J-Bar for the halfpipe or ski the halfpipe if you didnt have twins. 2002-2004 if I remember correctly at Roundtop, PA

Just being an absolute little shit on the mountain thinking we were hot shit and gangsters. It sure was some fun times.

Ive posted this a few times here already but this seems like a good place to put it again.

Best worst intro to a videogame ever:

edits like this is what got me into skiing

btw: does anyone remember the days where you had to call your drop at the terrain park? or is that a connecticut thing?

They dont do that anymore? I thought it was general park etiquette to call "DROP" before you go so two people dont snake each other.

LOL, I am impressed you still have your equipment............ I dont have any of my clothing but I do have my first twin tips(Line Darksides,1999) along with my old Lange boots. They kind of have a little bit of a sentimental value I guess.

Always wish I was alive to see this era of skiing

At the end of the day, 90% of the nostalgia of this era was just being young and skiing with your buddies without all the responsibilities and stress of being an adult. Sure then the culture has grown and changed as well as ski design but the feeling you get ripping down the mountain with your buds is about exactly the same in 2019 as it was in 2005. The only difference now that is kinda shitty is kids are focusing too much on filming and how they look on Instgram instead of just skiing for the moment.

Dude, you're a hoarder. Why do you still have that shit?

Lol the funny thing is I still rock that jacket every time I ski even to this day. The pass is flipped over but its actually a 2018 day pass to Monarch Mountain. I emailed 686 about it a few months ago and they were stoked and forwarded it to all their employees and gave me a 40% coupon. I dont typically hold on to stuff normally but I have an issue getting rid of any ski gear. For me, its not just an old pair of skis but literally represents an era in my life ie: Pockets Rockets- High School, 4FRNT VCT- College, 4FRNT CRJ- Memory of CRJ and post college career. It wasnt until recently that I realized that the Pocket Rockets are actually a somewhat important part of history for skiing as they were really the first twin tip pow ski produced.

haven't heard that shit in probably 4 years

I can relate to that heavily, sometimes I don’t like filming just because Wanna just ski. But at the same time I need to film because then I actually have to start learning new tricks lol, and so I have shit to make edits with bc I do enjoy that

I just miss when every ski movie had legitimately zero talking from the athletes (until maybe the credits/humor section) and it was just pure rider segments. Also amazing was the punk music = requisite soundtrack for 50% or more of ski segments. Finally, can we please bring back studded metal belts, basketball jerseys, Oakley puffy pants and sag rags. That is all.

might be a tiny bit past the "true early years" but anyone remember when bandanas were the wave in skiing? Everybody was rocking one, fuck man what a throwback

Dont forget the Oakley Skull belt buckle. Yes, I had one of these belts in Gold.

I would've been just the right age to really get into park during the "golden age" (08-11) but my old school family had given me a negative view on freestyle. It wasn't til later I gave it a shot and realized how fun it was

Cool that the jacket is still functional. I understand the sentimentality attached to items associated with particular eras or life events, I've let go of a lot of that and also skis take up too much space for me to hold onto for sentimental reasons.

Imagine The Wolf of Wall Street, now add skis, XXL clothing and a few cameras from Circuit City.

It was a wild time.

Man, the whole vibe where you could ski up to anyone with twins and just ride together was the best.

Oakley puffy pants in antifreeze - people would get pay so much for torn-to-shit and rail-stained pants. "Size small but fits like xl"

Trading out crowbar parts.

Helmets with visors.

Being the token skier in the crew.

Ice rink snow to ride sketchy homemade rails in the summer (are kids still doing this?)

I remember when a ticket to breck or key only cost 65 dollars. Those were the days. And when Country Boy early season jumps were the shit. And Keystones park was on the backside of the mountain before A51 was around.

Ok, it took me a sec for it to settle in but holy shit the Mario Rap into just hit me hard. God that was a classic, "Lay the Princess quick...cause she wants the dick."

Lol

I still rock my Giro G10 MX from 2007. It came with a super early version of the Skullcany Tuneups that actually had a CD case and a set of adapters to plug into the different phones of the era so you can use it as a headset if someone called. Double points for those here who remember what a Sony Ericsson is:

Why didn’t you join 4bi9?

I had to go to high school in PA then tapered off the scene. But it was so rad to see the dudes I grew up with skiing out in UT blow up like they did.

And I didn’t own any firearms.

I had a few of their phones after the startac Era, (edit: meaning after the era when startacs and Motorola phones were prevalent) good phones, good music players, durability was suspect.
