Tacoma Talk

Anyone know the difference between the 4x4 V6 Tacoma Base Model vs the TRD Sport? I'm thinkin about pulling the trigger on the base model, and want to know what I'm missing out on.

Assuming it's the 3rd gen and you're referring to the SR5, not the SR,I believe the following:

Scooped hood.

TRD Seats and 17 in wheels

Color matched grill and bumper

Different Shocks

Power outlet in the bed

plus some minor package differences (likely lights, interior electronic add-ons, etc.)

The real difference comes w/ the TRD Offroad or TRD Pro.

Are you looking at access cab or double? Why do you want the V6?

Why would you not want the V6? Buddy of mine has the 4 banger and been on some surf trips with him, thing struggles uphill with 2 dudes plus their shit

Does he have an autotragic transmission? If so that's the problem.

OP: if you're shopping new, get the trd off road or sport. You can't get a base 4x4 with a manual anymore.

Yeah no one in southern california buys sticks

that's just dumb, even with a manual the 4 cylinder is completely gutless haha

The 4 cylinder does fine at what it's made to do. The 6 is alright but if you want a truck that is any kind of quick look elsewhere, that's not what the tacoma does.

For reference I hauled 1800 pounds of soil this morning in a 2016 access cab sr trim and last weekend went over Echo summit to south lake tahoe in a 2017 off road with the v6. If you're going to argue gutlessness it applies to both trucks. Neither are speed demons.

Ford is set to produce a raptor ranger if you need a fast-ish mid size truck.

I really have to agree the 4.0 they put in those is what you want. You can add a factory supercharger for like 3500 dollars if that isn’t enough power, but the V6 is reliable on its own and does pretty good stock

The TRD version has bigger sway bars and Fox Shocks. the rest of the changes are mostly trim features.

Ya granted you could get a stick and maybe get the same performance but for someone who regularly has a bunch of buddies and said buddies shit in the truck it doesnt make sense to have a N/A 4 banger

He's referring to the 4.0Liter V6 found in second gen tacomas and thus agreeing with your viewpoint.

The 3.5 liter in the newer trucks (3rd gen, 2016-up) has more power on paper but a lot of people think it feels less powerful than the 4.0.

OP...are we talking about used Tacos? What number are you trying to hit? What part of the country?

No i know i was agreeing, just reinforcing why no one should have a 4banger truck unless its a diesel or turbocharged, or both

Sport is nice, better for long distance travelling, unless you really need rear-dif lock then get an offroad, just don't get the prerunner.

And if you need a truck to tow, get something else.

This. Good luck hauling anything if you ever need to.

I've hauled a 3000 lb load of rock in my Tacoma. Not saying that was a good idea but it turned out fine.

I've got a second gen access cab SR5. The main difference between the SR5 package and the TRD ones is I lack a rear locker. Head over to tacomaworld as well. tons of information.

Pro tip I heard from a guy you can save pretty good money on used Toyota trucks if you buy outside the PNW. Makes sense everything is expensive up here.

I know the market in California is asinine as well and Tacos pretty much have the best resale value of anything out there right now.

I've purchased three new ones in the past five years after brief looks at the used market. Why would I buy a two year old truck with 30K miles on it for like $2000 less than new? Unless people are paying msrp in which case it's $3000. Financing on new trucks is usually better as well. It doesn't pencil out. Unless you get an old beater which is still going to fetch a premium over a ranger or a nissan but the likelihood of it running for a while is high.

For sure, i bought mine new (leased first for a bit) because of this exact reason and at about 100k it'll be paid off and ready to sell for an insane amount of money.
