Extra: Tanner Talks

Shortly after his second-place finish in Ski Slopestyle finals, Tanner Hall sat down with ESPN to talk candidly about his displeasure with the outcome of the event, his missed four-peat and why silver sometimes isn't enough.

Q: Tell me what happened.

A: I was going for my fourth gold medal in Slopestyle, and fifth if you count the Big Air event before. I put together the run of my life. Did a trick on the rail that I had never done before, the 450 on the backside 270 out. Right after I landed that, I was like 'it's on.' There was one guy left, Charles Gagnier. You know, much respect, he's a great skier. Don't get me wrong. I'm super happy with second place.

I got ecstatic, but when you have a whole bunch of people coming up and saying, 'Oh, I think you got robbed,' it makes it harder, especially when you're going for your fourth and could have made X Games history. It makes you feel that you got robbed little bit. But now I've gotta tell you what, the fire is inside to win my first gold medal in the pipe, so that's what I'm looking forward to.

Q: Was the three-peat pressure or a confidence-builder?

A: There's a little bit more pressure because I was thinking about that a lot, four-peat, four-peat. It was always in my mind. But up after the first run, I was skiing that course pretty well. But sometimes it goes the way you want to and sometimes it doesn't. I'm super stoked because it was a great day for skiing. The level is getting better every year. It's actually looking like a legit sport, ya know

Q: This was probably the biggest run for your money yet. CR had a good run, Dumont had a good run. Tell me about the other people.

A: Like I said, everybody came up and said I got robbed. When I heard CR's score and Dumont's score, I was like, What? Are you kidding me? Simon is definitely not skiing at a sixth place or a fourth place, and neither is CR. When the two kids who got robbed come up to you, and their just shaking their heads, like, What's going on? It's just, (sigh) ...

Q: Tell me what it was like to come down in that finish corral.

A: It was great to stomp that last 1080 and look around and see hands in the air and hear the crowd roar.

Q: Tell me how much it hurts not to get the four-peat.

A: It doesn't hurt, it sucks. It sucks because you know, hey, Charles Gagnier won for sure. His skiing was undeniable and his run was perfect. But when I come down through the finish area and everyone's saying 'that's the run', and he comes down and they're saying 'don't worry about it', it makes it tougher.

Q: Tell me about the medal ceremony.

A: Well, the one good thing was I didn't have to walk up as high as I had to before. I was stoked to be up there with my boy Jon Ollsen and Charles Gagnier for his first Winter X Games gold medal. That was really cool. I might have not showed him much emotion on the podium because it sucks getting second place.

Q: So you taking this to Pipe?

A: I'm so stoked. I wanna be right back on top. Yeah, take all that aggression out on the pipe, for sure.

had he stuck his 10 at the bottom he definetly gets gold but he put his hands down and that is why he didnt win. same goes for jon

Why didn't he just say 'I got robbed'? We're all smart enough to read between the lines. Regardless, I'm impressed with is composure. I expected a lot less.

Cr and Dumont did get robbed though. There scores were pretty low and then all of a sudden tanner gets 3 more points to his score for a run that was only ab it better than other runs

Tanner's hand touched the ground and his 270 out was sketchy. His run was really sick, but Charles was better.

The runs were pretty similar, but Charles also finished first in the qualifs and he had so much pressure doing the LAST run and being after Tanner that I think he deserved it.

 
^it made no sense, he got scored lower than his first run when he did switch 10 at the bottom instead of the switch 9 he did the run beforehand. He looked so pissed when he got his score. Same with CR, two 10's and a shit score, ahahaha bullshit.

yea that sucks but the x seems to have a history for it, like last year when olsson slightly mess up the landin on a switch cork 9 off like the first hit, he didnt even put his hands down or ass check just absorbed the landin a lil hard and lost to olenick for second eventhough olenik missed grabs and his unnatty 7 was a lil more then sketchy in the air and his rails were lacking. and in summer x for FMX big air the carola one the comp even tho chuck missed the handle bars with one and and banged his shoulder hard on the bars, when pastrana did a flawless b-flip superman indian air, prob the craziest backflip variation yet

Gagnier is a sick skiier and i think tanner is just pissed because he thinks skiing owes him a fourpete. I dont think he handled that interview well at all, if you pay attention to the underlying comments, he is really still stuck up about the whole thing and probably thinks he should have won no matter what. but w/e good for him, hope he wins pipe.

Do you really think Jon deserved the score he got? If anyone got robbed it was him. Most of the time he's so smooth and doesn't even come close to screwing up, so the difficulty of what he does gets overlooked.

 
^ you obviously have no clue about technical defficulty and style. Yeah Gagnier was stylie but tanner is on such a different level than everyone else. There was no doubt in my mind Tanners run was way sicker and that he deserved the win. He deff got robbed so look for him to RIP in superpipe for sure. As for dumont the look on his face after he saw his score says it all.

If tanner had done something more technical off the first rail he would have won i think. And Jon got third because his first hit was sketchy and his landings were a little off.

yeah, like you're not going to be bummed out about it, especially when you're as much of a competitor as he is. i don't see what you're problem is with it, if everyone you're talking to is telling you that you got fucked and you're already bummed out that you didn't make history, it's tough.

 
yea im gonna say tanner and gangier were scored good. gangier's grabs are just too insane. dumont and cr are the only ones to get robbed.

What are you guys reading? 'Proud he's not whining'? He was whining the whole time... saying how he deserved it and how everyone said he was better. Of course thats what his friends are going to tell him, but Charles' run was heads and tails above his, even Jon's was better. Everyone I know thinks Jon should been 2nd, Charles 1st and Tanner 3rd. So no Tanner, you didn't get 'robbed' you were lucky to have gotten a silver.

juding is alway corrupted. after watching both runs i think t should have won, just his style is way sicker. theo nly thing i didnt like about his run was he wasnt landing far down on the tables he was barely clearing them

stop bitching tanner, u didnt get robbed, fucking gagnier did a sw UNNATURAL rodeo 7 PERFECT, and tanner barely landed his unnatural 5, tanner did a lipslide on the top rail, gagnier mixed it up with a one foot, gagnier did a perfect sw 10 at the bottom, tanner dragged his hand.. and CR did not deserve anymore then he got, his bio ten was only bioed for 360 part of it and only grabbed up to a 5, so i dont wanna hear bullshit... and the people only told tanner he got robbed because theyre part of his 'CHRONIC CREW'
