Symmetrical skis

hella bored right now and is wondering why barely any skis are fully symmetrical park skis. Yes i know that the a bangs, step ups, punx, and a couple others are but looking at the big picture of park skis the dimensions barely are symmetrical. Just curious as why they all arent.

+k for any help!

well, turns out there are a lot of symmetrical skis. my park skis (nordica ace of spades) and my pow skis (surface new lifes) are both symmetrical and mounted dead center.

but to address your point, much of it has to do with tradition when it comes to ski shape. make a uniform radius, have the thinnest point behind center, therefore the tail is thinner than the tip. with a center mounted ski it only makes sense that since the narrowest part of the ski is centered the tip and tail would be symmetrical, but many skis still favor improved forward handling over improved switch handling and therefore a non symmetrical shape is ideal, even if it's just barely off and the mounting point is only 1cm back. the thought process behind that is that no matter how much you ski switch, you're probably still going forward the majority of the time, so why not have the best handling properties while doing so.

hopefully that made sense

Skis that are symmetrical tend to be really hooky in the tails. They grab unpredictably and are harder to wash out which is why you don't see too many of them around.

I've ridden both symmetrical and non symmetrical skis and I prefer symmetrical for sure

I know of somebody at my hill who mounted carving skis backwards so that they were switch carving skis. she also mounted a pair of old twin with two bindings so two people were riding them, him and a friend hit a dfd like that.

tandem urban skiing, it's all fun and games till you hit the parking lot and drop the girl...

this. i don't want to go back. for the record, thats park skis since i have no reason to own any other kind of ski due to location.

my pow skis are symmetrical, and for the type of pow skiing i try to focus on, i wouldn't want it any other way.

(newlifes)

most twins these days are very close to symetrical like no more then 10 mm off. mine are 5mm off from symetrical, and i have em center mounted and they ski fine.
