hey guys i am traveling to geneva on the 3-6 of december and plan to take a train to a somewhat close mountain to ski....france, switzerland, vaud, whereever...just some what close. i got some good feed back before but i think people failed to see how early i was going. i would greatly appreciate some help from you guys over there about what mountains i should look into going. i know Les Diaberets is opened now, but only the glacier. do you guys have any more knowledge for me about where i should look into skiing. i know Les Diablrets has some good park scene but i was curious to know if there would be any place that would offer back country, big mountain this early...with the possibility of some park as well. i would really appreciate this guys, and thank you in advance

In Switzerland, Verbier is awesome for backcountry, not really park, but that time last year there wasn't a lot open. that said, there is more snow already than last year. May well be better off heading to somewhere glacial like Zermatt or Saas Fee where there should at least be a good park. As you say, Les diablarets could be a good option for the park.

yeah verbier is a lot of fun, i also had a good time shredding leysin, villars isnt too shabby either

i would prefer to do more back country then park, i mean i am gonna be in the alps so i would definitely be looking to do more back country. im not too worried about the parks, i can find those in the states as well

i just checked verbier's website and it says they open next weekend....DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THIS IS JUST FOR WEEKENDS??? OR WILL I BE ABLE TO SKI THERE MID WEEK

mmmmmmmmm bc beginning of dec, afraid not try again.

i would be amazed if verbier is open next weekend, barely any snow in the alpes at the moment, klosters has some but that is further north.

i wouldnt get your hopes up much about skiing, vast majority of parks wont be open, certainly no bc worth looking for.

for a full update on switzland pm michaelbc, lives in zurich i think, anyway has the best european knowledge on ns and will tell you whats up

just looked out my window and it's coming down pretty heavy at 800m in the tarentaise valley (tignes / val disere / la plagne / etc) so probably dumping up in the resorts at 2000m+... been cold lately, too. looks like this year is shaping up to be a pretty damn good one, so early season here might be surprising.

anyway just to let you know the train connections between geneva and a lot of the big french resorts suck ass since there is no direct line (2 or 3 changes, 4 or 5 hours in total)... it's only about 70 miles to about 10 absolutely epic resorts, so you are better off renting a car. (europcar.co.uk = the cheapness)

if you are set on the train, i dunno about how easy it is to get to the swiss ones via public transport, but it's gotta be easier. you cant go wrong with any of the mega resorts.
