Switch or fakie

Andy Parry

But seriously it is switchwhy should we use the same names as other sportsis it because you want skiing to go mianstreamI for one dont want that to happenSure A little money into the sport isnt the worst thing in the world but I dont want skiing to sell out

If Andy parry named all the ski tricks they would make perfect sense, he used to skiboard(possibly rollerblade too?) and they managed to get the names right.

BUt seriously, it is switch and thats unfortunate. if we didn't want to steal words from other sports we shouldn't have but we did and changed the meaning, you don't just change the meaning of any old word everyday so why did they do it for skiing? As for your rant about selling out, all i can think about it is "what?"

fakie comes from skateboarding it means going switch but using your good ollie foot which would be your front foot if you are doing a fakie trick. Unless you hit the jump switch and ollie off of your tails as you leave the jump you cant do fakie tricks skiing. that being said, skiing in reverse is hecka fun

if you havent noticed yetwhen i said andy parry i was joking due to the fact that he he always thinks up funny names for tricks (i.e. bindsoul, hippy killer, jackinfe tip dip, etc.)

No i knew what you meant but i sort of meant like if only he did decide what we called it.

underflip in FMX is off-axis backflip and they don't land backwards. Each sport has its own right to name tricks. 100% of skiers uses 'switch' and personally you, OP, may use only fakie if you want, but dont' try to obtrude you opinion. keep it for yourself.

haha i know thank you.

and no. fakie is switch nollie. can you ski nollie? no.

unless your riding backwards and popping off your tails then no you cant do anything fakie.

switch = opposite of naturally inclined direction of riding. i skate goofy, hence switch is left foot forward. i naturally ski forward, hence switch is backwards.

cab is a trick. half-cab, full-cab, cab 5 etc.

ok I see where you are coming from and you make a great case, but fakie does not necessarily only reference the tail slap as its means of definition. for example BMX and inline both use the term too, and to both it means to go backwards. On a board it is more complicated, but you can ride fakie WITHOUT doing an ollie, so your point is not exactly accurate. It is more about foot position on a deck, which is not really applicable to skiing, inline or bmx.

saying this again, but...

Switch and Unnatural essentially mean the same thing. If you are goofy, riding regular is switch. If you are right handed, writing with your left hand is switch. If you are right footed, most cases you have a natural inclination to turn to the left opposed to the right. Turning the opposite way of you natural inclination is more sketchy, less comfortable, OR your switch. Whether right or left is switch or natural depends on the rider... but other than which shoulder you look over, there is only one way to ride backwards. So in the end fakie makes the most sense, and it is consistant with every other action sports definition of going backwards.

Cab is a trick (fakie 360)

people have adapted it to mean fakie generally, but technically you are correct it is a fakie 360.

keep your faulty info to yourself tough guy, 100% of skiers DO NOT use switch to define fakie riding. i think this thread makes that obvious.

this needs a bump.

skiers sound like dip shitz calling fakie switch, it's gotten to the point that it seriously bothers me.

great thread.

FAKIE plz FAKIE end this nonsense 4 the sake of the youth.

switch=hard spinning direction, or if you wanta sound like a dip shit unnatural.

FAKIE

Its switch.

Switch makes sense. Cause your riding switched around.

Fakie makes no sense at all.

Spinning and sliding the hard way is unnatural

because its the unnatural way for you to do it.

Makes sense?

yes

howa bout left and right for spinning? unnatty is older than this thread, and increasingly irrelevant.. and call skiing backwards whatever you want slong as the point is made, just stop tryin to tell 50% of us we're wrong, you sound like a douche..

my main point:why does it still fucking matter to anyone?

and if you're calling an unnatural/right or left 540 a "switch 5", it'll be you sounding like "dip shitz"

at least to anyone i ever ski with

No, no, no, no, jesus no.

It is called switch. If you really want to get technical about it and use skateboarding as an example to skiing lets go there:

Regular = forward take off, normal pop

Switch = backward take off, normal pop

Nollie = forward take off, pop off noses (downhill)

Fakie = backward take off, pop off tails (downhill)

You're an idiot. What sport has switch associated with what direction they are spinning?

Further, the term "cab" comes from Steve Caballero and the "Caballero" which was a fakie frontside 360 on a skateboard. Half-cab evolved to a fakie frontside 180 on a skateboard.

Snowboarders took "cab" and dropped the need to pop the board in a certain way (ie. fakie pop) and the term "cab" became any switch frontside spin.

If skiers want to use the term tab (which I don't think we should because it has gone too far from the original meaning), the closest thing would be a switch natural spin. I say this because switch frontside is generally regarded as being much easier than switch backside on a snowboard, hence skiing switch natural.

Either way swich is switch. You can call it fakie if you want but switch is more correct.

/thread

Inb4 OP tries to rename safety grabs because they're not safe or mute grabs because you can still talk while doing one.

Not sure why this was bumped but what are you smoking OP. I pray this thread was made as a joke long ago and humanity has some hope left after all.

If not I must say that it's one thing to reply to somebody and be wrong, it's another thing to create a thread simply to point out how wrong you are on a topic nobody was arguing.

OP hasn't mastered the switch
