"SWITCH" IS FOR IDIOTS

Alright it's really beginning to bother me now that people have assumed that SWITCH is the end all WORD for skiing backwards. What is SWITCH skiing. I've always held my ground on that word in that it really makes no sense. Every time I've said it I find my self questioning what just came out of my mouth.

When we ski backwards it is a totally different postion due to the fact that our knees and head among other things don't function the same facing that direction. It's alot harder to go somewhere fast much less off a jump when you have to turn you neck around just to see where you're going. It's NOT like in snowboarding or skating where you turn to the other side and it's the same motion.

We as an industry need to rethink this one because it makes a big chunk of the action sports world look at us like we're bogus. I know the labeling SWITCH is just a step in the wrong (i.e. biting blindly) direction. The only thing I can think of as far a wordage right now would be like BS as in backside, but that sucks too. Seriously who's got something better, I know there is a better word!!!!!!!

I agree. I also have a problem with the word "skiing." It's nondescriptive and misleading. It may be a step backward, but we should probably call this sport "dual-board-snow-riding" or DBSRing for short.
 
almost none of the names for tricks exactly describe what you're doing. Like a truckdriver, lets change that to bend-over-grab-your-skis-and-take-it-up-the-ass position, shall we?

But honestly, switch is what you make it. I wakeboard and skateboard, and when I ride switch, its riding backwards. Sure, its easier to ride switch on a skateboard, snowboard or wakeboard. . . But anyone who watches skiers "ski switch" knows that we are so fucking hardcore that we do it the radddest fucking way possible.
 
abolishing switch skiing is unthinkable partly because we do not have the words to describe any alternative. switch skiing is at the center of the modern discourse of freestyle skiing.
 
There is no Stance in skiing, No Goofy or Natural (Regular for you seppos) therefore no Switch, Ive posted this before and gotten into alot of fights over this... In bmx when you ride backwards its fakie not switch , switch defines Stance not going backwards..
 
I think it would be fair to describe the stance as "forward"...just because it is unreasonable to except someone to ride backward as the norm, doesn't mean you're not switching stances
 
well said...do you think by starting a thread on NS that you are going to change the direction of the ski industry? Do you think Freeskier mag is going to see your thread and say, "you know, he's right! Company Memo: DO NOT USE SWITCH ANYMORE" Who cares what other sports think. We all know what the word refers to. Why use the word "mute" to describe a grab? Why use the word "critical" to describe a grab? Or toxic, blunt, truckdriver, japan, etc. They are just words.

Come on man...don't you have anything better to do with your time?
 
I mean really does it matter that much? Just say backwards. Or say nothing... or bite some other word. Whether you use switch, cab, fakie or whatever, you're still biting.

I say fuck it, it doesn't matter. If another sport is going to say "Look at those stupid skiers using the wrong word, lets never hang out with them." then fuck it I didn't want to talk to you anyways.

Why do the words matter so much?

 
fakie sounds gay, but why not just call it jea skiing, yeah man I was skiing jea on a groomer and the patroller from alta told me if he caught me skiing jea, he would arrest me.
 
in snowboarding its called goofy if your ride the unnatural way, and switch or fakie if your in your unnatural stance...but no one skis backwards primarily..mostly
 
I think he's just trying to start something based on an old article (last year's) in K2's Skeeze magazine. There was a whole right up about why skiing backwards is not switch...i call it switch, as wel as many other people...why not jsut leave it be?
 
why must people argue over such stupid things? call it switch, fakie, cab, backwards, whatever as long as YOU know what it means. hell, call it ridin' dirty for all i care.

if youre talking to a skier and you say 'switch', they know that you mean going backwards and your neck and all that is crazy. people already use that word for it and know what it means so dont worry about it
 
I'm adopting the term "dirty"

I was thinking switch could be called "gay", but i think skateboarding has that term too "a gay twist". They'd probably hold a meeting to decide if skiers can use the term. Then have a press conference and send out their lawyers to tell us to stop saying "gay" because its their word.
 
i think people have already stated the fact that switch isnt really "switch" but it is a name for it so just chill. who the fuck cares about something that litttle anyways
