this proves that there are A LOT of guys out there ripping who get zero exposure. even in aus the standard of riding over the past few years has got pretty insane, but its very hard to get north american exposure. im sure its the exact same for a lot of scandis and other euros out there.
this is why, and yes, im going to say it again, skiing needs a world tour, with a second tier tour to support the up and comers. that gives you a world ranking system, and a place for people to see the best guys on show all the time. also allows guys to graduate to the main tour when they are good enough to qualify. it means companies have an amazing medium to promote there products, and guys like this get the recognition they deserve.
you didnt see a single guy on the WCT last year without a sponsor (barring bede durbidge for part of the year), and most of the 200 or so guys who compete on the WCQ have a major sponsor, if not then some form of minor sponsorship...the best guys get the recognition they deserve, and those who cant live up to it are funnelled out of the system.
and people will flame this with the normal 'but skiing shouldnt be all about comps'....well some of the most recognised surfers on the planet are freesurfers. when companies have a good medium such as a world tour to promotioe there products, they grow, have more money, and expand there marketing ideaologys. ever heard of donovan frankenreiter? dave rastavich? ry craike? rob machado? these guys are some of the best surfers on the planet, some of the richest, and some of the most recognised, none of them surf comps, yet they would all be very thankful for the devlopment of the CT, which has seen their sport grow so big that guys like them can make a living from cashed up surf brands looking to exploit new avenues and the grassroots of their sport...this could easily work in skiing- a comp and freeski scene, and the sooner it happens the better for everyone, even if you dont yet realise it
