I go to georgia tech and tons of people had it at the beginning of the year, spread by parties, rush(shaking tons of hands), then more parties.
I haven't gotten it somehow despite playing drinking games and such with others who got it soon after said drinking games.
It's died down here. The entire hysteria behind this disease is not consistent with how tame it is. My friend's dad worked for the CDC(actually it's atlantaski's dad) and he explained to me that it can be bad it if mutates, which these viruses typically do.

I just got over my swine flu yay! Most miserable six days that I can remember for a long time. Unfortunately, now I may have pneumonia according to my doctor.

Get the vaccine!
Heres the run down.
The flu is almost certainly not going to kill you. It will probably kill 7 times as many people as the normal seasonal flu does each year.
The people most likely to be affected by H1N1 is anyone under the age of 65.
Why not old people?
Back in the late 40's early 50's a flu with similar markers to the H1N1 came around. Those who got that flu back then hold some antibodies and are less likely to get H1N1 this time around.
This isn't a pandemic because it is super lethal. Its a pandemic because almost the entire population is likely to get it because we have no antibodies to help us fend it off. What governments and doctors are warning people about is that once the flu hits a work place or school etc. It will most likely mushroom quickly and affect everyone who hasnt protected themselves against it. Primary example, lots of schools throughout the US.
What people are worried about is that potentially everything could hit a stand still for a week or so which would really fuck with the way things run. If everyone at the water treatmeant facility for your town or city gets sick in the same week, no one is there to make sure its running properly. Same goes for power, hospitals, businesses etc.
Getting the H1N1 vaccine is pretty much the only defense available to make sure that this doesnt happen. For this to work properly roughly 70% of the population has to get the vaccine.
When people say "DONT GET THE VACCINE!" like we are setting ourselves up for some super virus to wipe us all out. This just isnt true. Virus's are always evolving. Even if we didnt get vaccines, virus's would still be evolving. We live in an age where we have never seen what lethal virus's or diseases can do to a population. Ask your grandparents what it was when there was no vaccines for polio or smallpox. People were dying of these things all the time. Vaccine's wiped out these virus's in 1st world countries.
Do yourself a favor and get this vaccine.

What the hell are you talking about? There's so many holes in your argument I don't even know where to start.

-The system is going to come to a halt because of a flu if we don't get the vaccine? Do you really believe that or did your daddy tell you that?
-The entire population isn't "likely" to get it, people with weak (or weakened) immune systems are. Believe it or not, people have a very strong, natural way of fighting pathogens, a thing called an immune systems, which is actually weakened by the vaccine. The immune system produces anti-bodies naturally by being exposed to it, not by being inoculated for it.
-Smallpox and Polio are completely different than the flu, which is every evolving. I would ask my grandparents about it but they'd tell me the same thing.
-You said it yourself, "the flu is most certainly not going to kill you". Trust your damn immune system. You don't need a vaccine to fight a flu. According to that Ron Paul video Wozzy posted, between January and April, over 13,000 people in the US died of the flu, that's 800 people per day, yet you never hear about that on the news once BUT you do hear when one person dies of swine flu.
-Why has Obama's own kids not gotten the vaccine yet? Don't tell me it's because it wasn't available like the white house claims, he's the damn president, he could probably be in the middle of hte Sahara, be craving a fresh ham sandwich and get it within 10 minutes let get a flu shot for his kids that is readily available to the average citizen.
Don't bring in scare tactics and worst case scenarios to the argument. Local and national systems aren't going to shut down because of a flu. That's just ridiculous to think so.

i think he meant in order for it to be effective 70% of the population needs to get it to prevent the spread. granted bio is not my subject, but i seem to remember something similar in my micro class last year, group immunity or something like that its called. basically you immunize enough people and it prevents the spread.

my mom is insisting on getting me the vaccine. im petrified of needles so i will not get any shot that is not absolutely mandatory.. theres only one case of h1n1 in my school. hahaha

This way when you do encounter the real thing your body can fight it off immediately, before it has a chance to infect your cells and reproduce.
