SUV's

My buddy didnt do anything to rip it...he got caught in a hailstorm and the hail ripped right through the soft top

I drive a 92 Jeep Cherokee (XJ), it has the straight six in it and does great offroading. its got a 3.5" lift on 31" BFG AT tires. The only problem I have with it is it gets kind of cruddy gas mileage. I know a guy that bought a FJ new and traded it in for a new Tundra pickup instead. His main complaint with the FJ is it sucked fuel pretty bad. You probably can get into a jeep for quite a bit less money, Toyotas are awesome, but their resale value is high so expect to spend more to get one.

I've got a 96 Pathfinder with around 108K on it, and I've had it since about 103K and the only maintenance i have ever done to it, is change the oil, thing runs like a champ.

So based on that i would go with the X-terra or the FJ, just because those Fj's are fucking sweet, and also being a Toyota it will either last forever with minimal maintenance or uncontrollably crash. Your choice.

wow, kinda jealous.
I drive the 07 xterra off road and absolutely love it. as said, the 4.0L v6 is a must as it is an absolute powerhouse and with a tiny bit of work i have mine up to 300hp and 318ftlbs.
that said, they are great in the snow and as i said somewhere else the xterras will slide on all four on asphalt while the jeeps and fj will roll over pretty easily. im not saying it cant roll, but im pretty sure in some situations if i was in a jeep i would have rolled for sure.

really? i have seen mostly jeeps (wranglers) but hell, ive seen flipped bmw m3's. im just saying the xterra is proven less likely to flip than the fj and most of the offroad oriented jeeps. im not saying it wont flip.

Does your car drive itself to the mountain? I didn't think so.

User error... I see more people in more than capable vehicles stuck in ditches than not. Just because your car has AWD or 4x4 and can make it up a mountain on paper doesn't mean that it will.

truer words have never been spoken.

The only thing i see making it up a mountain without any probs (that isn't a helicopter)is this.

yeah, not much, but i figured i do my best to add, but i can say the service history is basically maintenance, no major parts, no huge bills, just tune ups and regular stuff. So i used that to base my recommendation. but its still worthless, all cars are different, people just recommend based on regular trends or personal experience.
