Surprised by Majority of NS Political Views.

Ok, first off, I just want to say I respect everyone's opinion. But it does surprise me to how many conservatives there are on this site. I think the conservatives out-weigh the liberals. Initially I assumed that being a freeskiing website, there would be more liberal, progressive thinkers, than those who are in favor of a conservative, traditional view on the world. So NS, why do you view politics the way you do? Is it your parents or your own views? and Why are they that way?

most NSers are born rich. and it could be skewed by those who actually take the time to respond to the threads.

and, imho, it is way easier to troll as a fake conservative.

You're surprised that the sociopolitical views of NS match that of the general socioeconomic state of those that frequent the sport of skiing? Middle to Upper class white people from the suburbs?

i try to expose myself to both sides but i feel that im more conservative. i just try not to involve myself in political shit storms

That's weird you got that vibe OP. I thought everyone seemed more liberal than conservative. With the exception of abortion views. But that's from the little time I spend in NSG

its because the majority of kids on this site have no idea what they're talking about beyond their rich parents' views

i get almost the opposite perspective. i feel like in most political discussion threads it will be one or two conservatives/page "debating", if you will, against considerably larger amounts of liberals. just my view.

lets try and keep this discussion too a calm discussion and not a shitstorm on political views

it's pretty all over the place, imo. i'm definitely fiscally conservative, but somewhat liberal on most issues (i.e, healthcare, abortion, drugs, etc.). in terms of ns, i feel like the majority of peeps here are a) american, b) ski and c) "well off" and therefore, conservative. after all, skiing is somewhat of an elitist sport..

I hardly think you can use "progressive thinkers" when describing either "side".

Honestly my views are more republican. I'm a registered republican. But that doesn't mean I support any of the shit going on these days.

Same reason most of them don't snowboard. Common Sense.

nah, this shit is full of librodouches, and then you have many thinking that all conservatives are as batshit crazy as woozy.

I also think it is funny that many people associate being politically conservative with being rich. I think you will find that this is untrue. I think you will find that overall, the spread between 'conservative' and 'liberal' is 50/50, give or take, across most income brackets. Which side carries more sway in each bracket is much more dependent on the current social, economic, and political situation. What you will find however, is that those who live in denser urban environments, tend to be more liberal than those who live in more rural environments, at least politically.

I've noticed it too in my time here. It's pretty typical and unsurprising, actually.

1. Skiing is a "privileged" sport (think of the equipment, transportation, access costs).

2. NSers primarily ski.

3. NSers are primarily under 18.

4. Those under 18 often do not hold concrete political views, and often inherit those of their parents.

5. Many parents of those "privileged" enough to ski are wealthy or at least middle-class.

...the result, apparently, is a large percentage of GOP (or, at least, pseudo-GOP) NSers.

Oh look! Another baseless claim from someone that I can only assume to be conservative. Coincidence? I think not. The plot thickens my friends.

no. i live in the nicest part of minneapolis, i am the only conservative person on the block i am 17 and my parents are semi conservative.

And while the discussion is focused more on left v. right rather than individual topics right now. I might as well give a quick explanation as to why I often end up on the 'conservative' side of the street.

I prefer that I get to choose how I spend my money, rather than the government getting to decide. I also tend to think that they have a habit of making poor decisions with it. I also think other people should be able to chose how they wish to spend their money.

What 'right' do we have to someone else's money?

While some government sponsored programs provide an overall societal good, they are almost always grossly inefficient.

It is my responsibility to take care of my self, both physically, mentally, and financially. Not someone else's job. Nor is it my job to take care of you physically, mentally, or financially. If you make a financial mistake, deal with it. Don't ask me (or other taxpayers) to fix it for you. If you did not have the common sense to plan ahead and accommodate for Murphy's law, too bad, you now have a great opportunity to learn from the consequences of your mistakes.

Seems obvious to me. Buncha privileged white dudes gathering around talking about something only slightly less cost prohibitive than competitive dressage...Yeah, there might be some leaning towards particular opinions.

I feel the same way.

I'm more conservative than anything really, but I don't choose to discuss why because arguing politics with NSG would give me ulcers.

I also don't live with my parents.

Fuck off you stupid cunt. I have never seen you back up any of your posts with facts. Stop being a bitch just because some one said something good about the opposing side.

I'll concede the existence of welfare whores in the US if you concede that universal healthcare has worked in other countries.

The whole political system of the US surprises me. Australians tend to vote with whichever party has the best policies whereas you all seem to pick a party and stick with it.

One day, you'll grow up and realize that money makes the world go round. Socialist concepts end in dictatorship and poor living conditions for everyone. The system is perfect, it just doesn't work with humanity.

And btw, Guevara is an interesting character, but the last time I saluted him for his actions I was about 15 years old.

People are greedy. Some people more, some less. They have different needs and desires. And that's the reason why there will always be disparities in society.

Are you blind? Are you even aware of what Obama stands for? Green Alternative engergy, health care reform, women's rights...all seem like progressive ideas to me.

When all these "conservative" NS graduate from college and are trying to make it by in the real world they will be sucking Obamas dick and thanking him for letting them stay on their parents health care plan for a couple years while they get their life in order.

I don't make absurd claims to try to sound like I know what I'm talking about. I'm a celebrity and a part of SAG, I don't need to make silly things up in order to feel important.

What a political candidate "stands for" =/= the actions that a political candidate makes in achieving goals directed at either side.

Republicans are soooo stupid! do you have any idea how much money they steal from the poor every year. Plus who are they to decide if people can have abortions? its not thier life! and gay marriage....why in the world do they have to care what people do inside thier own homes? rich conservatives suck and thier views of how to treat have nots and people with other views as them is totally fucked!

I am glad you have a wide view on things.

What money do they steel from the poor? How do they steel it?

Many people who are opposed to abortions have that belief because they view it as murder. If you disagree with them that is fine, but they are entitled to their opinion just as much as you are entitled to yours. Like it or not, many people have very strong views on gay marriage, and even homosexuality in itself. They view it as wrong, is it your job to determine their morals for them?

There are two sides to every argument, and a lot of stupid ends up on both.

Sweeping statement .com.

I think you'll find most kids on here are fiscally slightly conservative - because they have to grow up, go to college and find a job through all this shit - in a country preferably not crippled by debt. So - i think that's perfectly legit.

Socially, I imagine most folks are pretty liberal.

this should have ended the thread, political veiws don't matter unless you vote.

Also i can't even decide on political veiws,

Please explain what you mean here. How do the rich "steal" money from the poor. At age 16 i was living in my car. Did i at that point think that it was the responsibility of others to take care of me? No. I felt that it was my personal duty to get myself out of my bad situation. I worked hard every day in order to try and get out of my situation. I worked minimum wage jobs for 40-60 hours a week, and was able to get my feet back under me. Even than, I was paying these stupid taxes which are aimed at social programs which are abused. Since Clintons administration the number of people on social programs has gone from 5 percent to almost 30 percent of Americans. Does that sound acceptable to you? I worked hard every day, and never took a dime from the government. Now I live in Breck and am thoroughly happy with my life. Being successful or even being simply comfortable in life is NOT easy.

We live in an incredible country where any person can do well if they go for it. That is the idea of capitalism. What you are speaking of, and what President Obama speaks of in wealth re-distribution, has a very socialist feel to it. It is not something I am comfortable with.

It's time there was a little more personal responsibility in this country.
