This summer I want to try to get into surfing. I have a bunch of friends who do it so I can alwyas learn from them. But what are some good cheap boards to learn on and what are some basic beginner tips? Any help would be great, thanks

ya go with something around 8-9 feet if your starting off then move to fiberglass/tuflite

shortboards are cooler but a little harder than longboards, but some surfshops rent surfs so you can try to see which one you prefer

and tips well....put your board in the sand before going in and practice your paddling and how you get up and practice your speed of getting up

i go to school in manhattan and tons of my friends are from rockaway. they all surf. they then dominate the swimming competitions. Its not really a ghetto. just near one.

I tried surfing in mexico, but the day I went out I only got 2 waves in 3 hours, I never managed to get up.

id definately get a longboard. not only are they easier to learn on but the waves arent so big here and longboards obviously have more flotation for smaller waves and not going so fast. the shortboards work if youre going fast but on small waves they wont have enough flotation. id get somethinig maybe 9 ft or so. big enough to float but short enough to be a little manuverable. i go in maine in the summer. sick sport

don't get a longboard!!! Get a board depending on how tall you are and how much you weigh. Longboards are fun for a while, but they get boring. You can throw shortboards around more, and do airs on them too.

i have a freind who surfs all summer on block island. He rides on a board that his height and hes about 5"6.... he fucking rips.
