I'm heading back for college in a few weeks and I'm gonna have time to do a lot of surfing and am thinking about buying a board. The problem is I have no idea what type if board to buy. I've been told to buy a longer board but I don't want to grow out of it cause I can't afford to buy a new board in a few months. So, is a longboard really the best option or would it be okay to learn on a shortboard?

 
Well if you're a never ever, you don't want to learn on a shortboard. I would say if you don't have a board, get a long board first and get a shortboard later. With a longboard you will be able to go out in a much wider range of conditions and you will get a lot more waves when you're learning. Where are you going to be surfing? what kind of waves will you be riding?

 
^^ I'm gonna be riding out of pismo beach and I have been surfing a handfull of times and plan to continue to rent for a while but when i do buy a board do you still think a longboard would be the best option?

 
do you guys recommend taking a lesson or 2 when you're first starting? or is it relatively easy to get the hang of surfing... cause i'd love to go

Well, pismo beach you'll be fine with either, when it's real small with a shortboard though you're just gonna need to work it. it really depends on what you want to do. it's 2 different disciplines of the sport, really. if you're more into the up and down, slashy type of riding, go with a shortboard. If you're more into cruis'n, get'n up on the nose, etc.. go with a longboard. Both are awesome and if you want to really get into surfing, eventually you'll want both haha.

 
learning on a longboard is much easier than a shortboard, however once you get the hang of popping up and shit, youre gonna want a shorter board noo doubt. learning on a shorty is tough but you can get teh hang of it. if your short on money just go straight to shorty. or get a fun board, like a 7 ft. i hav e a 7'0" local motion board and its good for all around surf

 
you can still use a longboard after your done learning. there are tons of people who only longboard. also, if u decide you want to switch to a shortboard you can sell the longboard. used longboards are in high demand right now, so you won't have a problem selling it at a price close to what u bought it for.

also, if you're looking to save money, you can ask your local shop if they have any shop brand boards. these boards are usually made overseas in the surftech factories and massed produced. although they are not as good as big name shapers, they are still pretty good boards, and good for learning on, and they're alot cheaper, sometimes like half the price.

spandex racing is way worse than snowblades...at least snow blades you can laugh at and go on and do stupid stuff that can be fun for a short ammount of time

people who race are the best skiers on the mountains, so shortboarding (the better more experianced people from what i understand) is like spandex racing.

I would get a longboard like every single other person. Just look in the local paper for a board. All the shops in town and pismo are really expensive. Also pismo sucks.
