I'm looking to buy a surf board instead of renting one all summer. I figure it'll add up anyways.

Any suggestions for brand and place to purchase for relatively cheap?

the interwebz, just go on ebay and get something cheap and in decent condition. i don't know if you've done it before, but don't start out with an expensive one in case you don't end up liking it
 
get Second hand cheap boardsthe better you get the smaller, thinner the board, so you will be stepping down alot quickly
Start off with a mini mal and step down a ft or two but keep the thikness and width, after that you will slowly step into shorter and shorter boards.
it will slow you progression down alot if you get a board to short for you straight away.hope this helps!
 
definitely go used first. board values drop quick once theyre used, but they still work fine. youre gonna beat up youre first few anyway, so dont go crazy on your first one. depending on where you live, check the used/consignment rack on your local shop.
 
sounds exactly like what i need, do you know the deminsions or a site where you can buy one? I build boards myself, so i just need the general demensions. Rhode Island waves arnt to great, so i need a pretty bouyant board, but im not a fan of 8ft+ boards and regular short boards dont work very well in the average conditions i ride in
 
sarcasm? but yes it is, not enough flotation and you have to pump a lot which gets tiring. where i go gets 4 to 10 ft waves on average, 15 to even 20 in storms
 
idk what coast your on but either way deff buy a used board to start and make sure its not under 6' cause you will be having no fun especially if your on the east coast then slowly go down in size as you feel you can also just try and find a local shop near your beach theres gotta be one just go in there and ask for help i'm sure they'll hook you up
 
No unfortunately not sarcasm, picked up a used shortboard because it was dirt cheap. Total surfing noob, just wondering if I should even try it in waist high surf. Guess not huh. I think it's like 6'8" or so.
 
i would recommend going to a real surf shop. not a shop that just sells surfboards, but somewhere that the shop owner actually know what hes going on about. talk to him about how much you will surf, where, how good you are, how much you want to progress etc. he will help you get a board that suits you. you could buy of the web but definalty go and talk a good shop owner if you dont know much about what boards.

i started when i was 11 on a 6' 9 board with a fat template and fish tail. dont get a thruster straight away cause you will find it very hard to ride. i cant stand up on mine in whitewater cause it just sinks.
 
I'd suggest nothing smaller than about 7' for starters by the way... a 7'6 egg or funboard would probably be a great surfboard to learn on i'd imagine, since you get the float of a longboard, but theyre easier to turn. They are at least great to transition to shortboards.
 
I bought my first board used at a shop. Hear from a lot of friends that that was the place to go. Think I paid 200 for the board, it was in real good shape. Got a half priced wetsuit and and bunch of free shit.

Still have that board actually.
