Super8 Filming

I have picked up 2 Super8 cameras this summer, both of them going back to the 70's. I plan to shoot with them a little this winter, and I was wondering if anybody else had any experiences with Super8. How was the quality, processing, and shooting?

one of my best friends has used a super8 to film skating and it looks sick, so old-school...expensive to develop but the cameras are cheap so thats a plus. i dont know how well the older ones will work in the cold...haven't tried yet.

i use super 8 all the time - 10 bucks for film and 5 bucks for processing for 3 minutes. works good in snow you just have to watch the exposure because its real easy to have the snow overpower and wash out the whole image. get film and processing mailers at bhphoto.com

you will need a projector to view the film when you get it back from kodak. you can get your film transfered to minidv, but it costs a lot to get a good quality transfer

Yeah, no doubt 8mm looks pretty sweet, but is it worth the effort? Film and processing will add up to quite a lot if you shoot a lot. Ad how to you capture 8mm to your computer? Do you have to use some sort of projector/scanner? I bet that costs quite a lot if that's the case.

Is it possible to create a film effect in Premiers, or do you need After Effects or something else?

My friend has a projector and he rolls the film onto a white wall and uses his GL1 on a tripod to put it on DV. Then on the comp.

go on ebay you can find the m for like 10 dollars. click on mammothpunks links to get film and mailers. 5 dollars a minute isn't tha bad if you think about it, if you make a 20 minute long movie and you shoot 10 minutes total of super 8, and say half that makes it in, then you've only spent 50 bucks.

look for a canon cam on ebay - i have an 814 electric and its really good. i like canons because they have a lot higher quality glass optics than most other super8 cams. 814 1014 all those models around there are good

i have an old super8 projector, its crazy. transition effects take forever with cutting and taping together the film

if we were meant to fly, they would have given us more lsd

your best bet for a projector is a flea market or garage sale. most projectors on e-bay are pretty pricy

yea and for the dude who wanted to know how to transfer to edit, your gotta find a projector, toss the images onto a wall, then film the projection with a minidv/3chip/etc, its best to use a tripod to get the best shot, then just grab a firewire and put that on your comp and your set... iv done it a few times, next to no quality is lost

Thanks for allt he input guys. i was planning on projecting it on the wall and then taping it anyways, seems like the best way to go. i can get film, and get it processed pretty cheap through my school. i wasn't planning on filming a ton of footage with them, just a few cartridges. i have a few Super8 cameras, so i will experiment with them and figure out which one works best. as far as the guy who just said to use plugins in Premiere, i guess he doesn't get the point of filming with real film. i'm not trying to put him down at all, but i want to use real film, not a plugin. and i dont use premiere anyways. i use imovie, and plan to use that until second semester when i can get my hands on a copy of Final Cut Pro. Thanks again guys.

When I mentioned making it look like film in Premiere - of course I'm not saying it's going to be the same as using real film. I'm just looking for a cheaper alternative to get a similar effect.

I'd have to say that buying film and getting it developed is much cheaper than buying Premiere. i understand what you mean though. i cant say that i have never taken the halfass route out of something.
