Sunday River,explain yourself.

as i'm sure a lot of you guys know already simon dumont is at SR trying to break the QP record. if you aren't familiar with SR, they are building the QP on a trail that is pretty out of the way (airglow), not close to the main park at all. And as i'm sure many also know, this thing is pretty freakin huge. When i was talking to a ranger, he said that once dumont was done with it, the whole QP was going down, and all the snow that was blown was not going to be utilised into a massive terrain feature. Of course PBP is paying for all this, and SR gets a ton of promotion, i guess, but it just seems extremely silly to do this.

i guess what i'm really trying to say is, dont you think its a waste of SR time and energy to not reutilize it?? wouldn't you hate it if your home mountain did something amazing like this and just said, in the end, fuck it?? it really makes me mad. not just because they are tearing it down, but because it shows how truly sick sunday river can be. if you have skied sunday river in the past two years, its main park has been truly less than amazing. nothing in comparison to the 70 foot money booters of years past, and heat harvest-esque perfection jumps. one could even say that it was comparable to some west coast features. but what i'm saying is sunday river can't do this to its local riders, its the worst tease you can ever imagine. so yea, SR, think before you waste a ton of time blowing snow you aren't going to re use and consider your MAIN FUCKING PARK that you have neglected all year. i know you can build jumps with real lips and landings, quit being lazy and dont do the same shit you did this year next year.

red bull pays the bills to build it and then sunday river doesnt need the extra liability of opening up a huge jump to the public. But i agree with you it is pretty gay.

its the pitch too, it said scientifically he would have go go nearly 50 mph to go 30 feet out, and airglow has a super steep pitch right into it

i could have told you that was going to happen when i first heard of about it. a lot of ski places do that make something for a pro then take it down.

thats what pretty much all resorts do

Vail:plows huge 60 and 75 footers after the Honda Session is over and make other way smaller

Aspen:close and make other jumps smaller after X games

ETC the list goes on

it is all about liability

they cant open shit like that up to the public

even if you want them to build a jump or whatever it is pointless

why would you want a jump over there if it is no where near the park??

well what i'm thinking is build it on the trail they do heat harvest on, or even the race trail (inbetween superpipe and park), and reutilize it. they dont have to leave it up, just reuse the snow, and pay more attention to their main park, which is really waht i'm bitching about. i know i can't get shit done but i'm just asking if anyones mountains do this and if it makes you angry.

airglow is on the opposite side of sunday river in comparison to white heat (where heat harvest is) so it wont be going there, and the snow will most likey be spread out on airglow and it will be able to remain open longer. i agree that they should put the snow somewhere more useful like the main area of the mountain so that trails can be open longer in more traveled areas. also sunday river does indeed need to pay more attention the their main park. especially this year the lines seemed incredibly short with the stair-hip-table-table line on one side or the stairs-dance floor- table-hip-assortment of boxes

it was so hectic and improperly made tables just made it all so much worse

mt hood Meadows almost always does this, almost every cool feature you see in a movie from meadows was closed to the public and then bulldozed. With the exception of cascade super park (colby west follow cam footage) but this year rumor has it, it will be closed to the public.

my home mountain, Grouse, does this every year, basically for the past decade. What makes it worse than your case, though, is that they build it solely for snowboarders and a skier has never, I repeat never, been able to hit their pro features. Don't you love liability:)

i agree with you 100%, a few years back, sunday river was way ahead of the curve as far as east coast parks went. they had bigger and more inovative features than a majority of mountains this side of the mississippi...i feel that just about every east coast mtn is doing somthing like this tho. they are having these rediculous events (like the us open at stratton) where the parks are unreal and kids on the east coast are finally getting the opportunity to ride legit features, then they destroy the parks...its brutal

Been well explained by the above posts since the answers are obvious for industry watchers.

As to the question for "why airglow?" We looked at a handful of spots and this was the only one with the required super steep into super flat for the building of this feature. Can't build a QP like this one on a location with pitch.

This thread is funny.

Poor Boyz didn't pay for this feature. This project is funded by Red Bull for a Red Bull athlete. Sorry but that's not you guys. Sunday River is just the venue. Bitching about this is like saying you're mad because you couldn't hit Danny Way's mega ramp in China!

Sorry to break it to you guys but this feature is not for you. It's nothing personal, its just how it is. Obviously this may come as a bit of a shock but also keep in mind this is one of the first super features ever built on the East Coast so I can understand why some people are upset. Don't be.

Enjoy the story that'll be coming in a few days if/when Dumont breaks the record and please quit your bitching. Again, this feature was not built for the general public. It's a private photo shoot. End of story.

same thing happens every year at whiteface in NY they have a world cup boardercross 1 trail above the park the best park ever was when the moved it over but now they just plow it over its the biggest wast ever

hes not bitching about not being able to use the qp hes bitching that there doin nothing wiht the snow when its done and there lack of effort on their main park all year long which can be said about most of the east coast mountains this year compared to say 3 or 4 years ago

exactly! i'm tired of this treatment, SR needs to quit joking around with this. if it was built in the main park or the trail over i wouldnt' complain as long as the snow was reused, but god damn, SR needs to get that shit together.

rocking chair is as good as its going to get this season at SR...i dont think theyd ever re use that snow for another park for the public. RC isnt the best but its not awful, itd be a waste of time and money to make another feature/feature out of the snow used for this quarter pipe

This is the first year I skied at SR and they got off to a good start with a nice jib park thrown in early, but that rocking chair park has no flow and they just don't change it up at all. And the mountain itself is miserable. It takes like an hour to get from one end to the other, there's no real good steep terrain. The one spot I like there is the spruce cliffs but gapers flow through there and side slip their edges down the rocks.

The reason it was placed where it was is background. Red Bull came weeks ago and determined it was the best trail in regards to slope and had a visually appealing background. Again, SR did not make this call. Building a jump up there, so far away from the park, this late in the season doesn't make sense.

Why not hit rocking chair. I went through it today with the great spring conditions and it was amazing. I had a lot of fun and isn't that what skiing is about?

fuck sunday river.. the only true effort that they put into their parks is for events.. bud light rail jam, no bib jib series, heat harvest, simon dumont QP... all of these events are completely done up, maintained as perfect as possible. however, if you go into a normal sunday river park on any given day.. it sucks. boxes are crooked, jumps are shitty, landings are horrible. i remember the bud light rail jam last year, the set up was a flat box, down box, and urban down rail. nothing amazing, but they actually spent time to carve nice lips, set it up correctly, and maintain it. if sunday river did this in an actual park, such as rocking chair or south ridge, then I think I'd actually want to go to SR again.

every time I hear a kid drop sunday river's name for the best park in the east, it makes me shudder. most people are under this impression merely because of the event coverage they see, the sunday river banners on the massive booters at heat harvest, shit like that. if you really want to see a dedicated park crew, flawless jumps, and the most flow in the east.. just go to Loon.

/end rant.

that is not what he is saying he is saying that when they destroy it don't just waste the snow which is what they will be doing, but put it towards sunday river's park to make it better, That is all he is saying.
