Sun Peaks Gils/Backcountry

Does anyone know if you need a beacon etc to go into the Gils area at Sun Peaks, it says its outside the boundary but theres loads of gapers on youtube hiking up there?

no, i'm pretty sure you don't, tons of people go out there without them. for the most part, it's an easy hike and an easy descent, unless you want to go far out.

I have had a friend end up at whitecroft (10 minutes down the hill from sun peaks) but it was completely their fault haha

ahh sweet, yeah im not looking to go majorly far out just shred some differnt terrain with a bit of snow, sounds like what I thought

Where do you hike from, is there anything good off the crystal chair, just I hate riding the burfield its so slow.

Its a long hike from Crystal.
BTW beacons are always recommended. Its not just for you. If you see another rider go down in an avvi, how are you gonna help?

Yeah I would like to have a beacon and all the kit but I just cant afford it.

If it looked vaguely dangerous I wouldn't consider it but the area seems quite tame from what I'v seen on youtube (I could be wrong) hence why I'm asking on here as I don't know anyone that could take me up there.

If anyone skis there on a monday/tuesday and wouldnt mind showing me a few little spots in return that would be cool, would chuck you some beer or something if you wanted.

Ive never been that far over but I plan to this season. Ill be living up there so I guess Ill cya there.

It is always a good thing to have the right equipment when using the backcountry but in my experience it's not needed at Sun Peaks unless you are hiking far out into the valley towards elevators where it starts to get a little bit steeper. The descents are not very long compared to other places but its a very quick turn around that involves minimal hiking.
