Summer X Games disappointment

Alright..so Im live in NZ so i cant get to watch them live so after a few highlight videos I find out Jake brown wins Big Air with a backflip and Travis Pastrana wins with Double Back Flip? Is anyone else kinda gutted?

Is skiing the only X games sport that really gets pushed and Progressed each year?

i dont think motorcross can really progress past backflips just because of the limitations of the bikes they ride. maybe in the next few years theyll redesign the bikes to be a bit more manuverable and less massive but until then there not gonna do much but backflips and backflip variations.

You're quite off.

First of all Jake Brown didn't win because of his backflip. You're forgetting the other half of big air which is the quarter pipe. Jake did an off axis indy 540 type thing 22 feet out! This is what brought him gold. Not the backflip.

Secondly Travis Pastana didn't win with a double back. He won with a series of more tech tricks and on his victory lap, since he was last to go and had the win in the bag, he threw a double backflip for fun.

yes but on skate big air the only tricks ever thrown are threes and fives on the quarter pipe. There has been no progression in 5 years.

sorry, last comment was for post before and I didnt get to finish it.

I thought Travis would put down a TP7 which is definitely progression away from straight flips..

And to the above comment..

That actually explains a bit and thats probably why it sucks to just watch the highlights.. so misunderstanding on that behalf..

i dont think you quite comprehend how gnarly skate big air is along with how varied and technical the tricks in skateboarding can be. the progression in skateboarding happens on a few different levels whereas in skiing the progression goes from double flip to triple flip

hmmmm, interesting.. i thought he would big air with a double backflip it was actually freestyle.. makes it a little different.

did you watch it? bob almost got a 9 on the quarter two times in a row, and it kinda sounded like he had landed it before, although im not sure about that. give it a year or two and i wouldnt be surprised if a 9 on the quarter is the go-to for a few of those guys

Haha, the Summer X Games are an embarrasment to the winter X Games. Winter X should change it's name so that people don't think it is associated with the Summer X Games.

Also, snowmobiling is not invited to the new Winter X.

this is a good point

i remember a few years back they made a moto-x bike with a single crown fork so that someone could try a bar spin or something. It ripped the headset off of the bike, but there def has been some progression

i thought the biggest disappointment was the rally racing. The track was terrible, the drivers barley understood it and just wasnt exciting. Epic fail i thought.

yea it was just pathetically bad. the track was terrible, it was extremely slow, every corner was way too slow. and on top of that half the competitors had no fucking talent, just a bunch of dirtbike guys with a shit ton of money buying their success. next year they need a track with actual high speed corners, get rid of that retarded jump. and invite some drivers that actually have talent.

this thread is fucking stupid.

its one thing to go off a jump and land on snow with an extra 10 lbs on your feet.

Its a nother thing to do a double backlifp with a 200 pound bike.

skateboarding is the same way, i skateboard and ski and i'm 10 times nastier at skiing than skateboarding

Does anybody else think the riders aren't as stoked being there this year. I saw a little of skate park and bike park and it kinda seemed like that. Especially the bikers, they seemed to have no energy and slowly moved about the park with no passion. Maybe becuase I kinda stopped caring about the x games, but that's kinda how I felt watching it. It also wasn't the finals, which may be why. I could be really wrong though, and they could be very happy to be there and I just couldn't tell...

sir i think your retarded. lets just look at some of the crazy shit that went down.

pastrana double backflip in FMX AFTER he already won, his final run score was like 6 points less than his winning run.

PLG nollie heelflip indy 5?? one of the craziest things ive seen on a vert ramp on a board.

Bobs switch up on the rainbow rail

the youngins coming out firing in skateboard park

Cam sinclair landing the double back in moto best trick after it landed him in a coma for 7 days last time he tried it.

bestwicks 3peat in BMX vert, sure no one even pushed him to throw his bangers but some of the styliest riding ive ever seen.

sure they messed some shit up like the rally course but i enjoyed this xgames alot

really? jesus christ. it was pastrana with a 100k plus test bike that they had a pro BMX rider come in and try decades with. pastrana then used it (as a joke) to try a backflip bar spin with it. it didn't work- end of story. that's all.

Did you really just complain that a SKATEBOARDER did a fucking backflip on a 70 FOOT GAP?! and that a motox guy did a DOUBLE BACK? No one else does that shit minus the like 3 skaters who can and travis who is the only one to do dubs, how is that not progression? You're a fucking dumb ass kiwi.

Anyone else REALLY disappointed in the street course? I like the fact that they changed it up, but what the fuck was that shit? A broken coffee cup quarter pipes?

I'm still trying to comprehend the fact that Jake Brown backflipped that fucking gap.. I literally thought this day would never come

just because skate 1/2/3 physics are remotely realistic, and you can do a double flip/cork in it does not mean you can do them in real life as easily. i dont really skateboard much/at all, but i mean straightlining a drop-in that steep on skis into a 70 foot booter is pretty damn gnarly, and your feet are attached to your skis....

rally was a real letdown this year though, the prelims/qf/sf's were decided by course confusion, car failure and shitty mistakes.

the superrally finals were fucked and they missed a lap, fuck even the announcers COMPLETELY MISSED one of the drivers going over the jump in the final... like what the fuck youre supposed to be watching and commentating for the viewers and you somehow miss a car going over a god damn jump? jesus christ espn

In terms of Moto X you have to look at what their tool for the sport is. There is only SO much you can do on a damn motocross bike. Also, for them, the memory of what happened to Carey Hart when he was trying to progress the sport into backflips is probably still with them:

And dude, Brown backflipped a 70 foot fucking gap.

Yeah, I suppose so but to be frank... after Pastrana and Mezger (or however you spell it) started being the only ones to really fight for gold I stopped watching the X Games.

FMX is progressing you just aren't paying close enough attention. TP did the dub flip in his 3rd run which didn't count, he had already won with he previous run.

skateboarding on the other hand is completely retarded.

No one is consistent, and can't land shit on command. you are pros guys, land some shit.

skateboarding vert still hold it down, but street is so weak i don't see how they justify giving it so much time.

dude, what are you talking about? the street skate was the best. It was all about the flow. If you saw the finals, Huston killed it, Sheckler was a supreme hack show the entire time until the last round, dont think he deserved gold. but skating for 45 seconds and landing all your tricks is a true test of skill, and I was very entertained while watching the entire street event. Big air was dissapointing, only saw the highlights and all I saw was a hippy jump 180 on that giant ass rail. So pretty lame, skate. makes big air seem way sweeter than it is.

And to who ever said that Pastrona is the only one to do dub b-flips is wrong. Theres an aussie who can do dubs and mike metzger as well. but none the less, FMX has hit a bit of a progression block, trick wise atleast.

wow. your mad..

First off all, double back is sick and all but it won X games two years ago, how is that progression? In my mind Its like seeing a kangaroo flip at x games 2010.. ?

Maybe its just that skiing is a younger sport.. but it just seems that X games is like, the biggest comp, that can showcase an entire year of working/progressing on new tricks..

And as for skating.. a backflip is a new trick? Wow, I thought that had been landed.

Ok... well being there... it was crazy! There was a lot more excitement it seemed this year than last year. I think the way it is getting portrayed is slightly different though. They are trying to make it a little more mainstream and get more viewers. Apparently it is working quite well.
I know no one really feels like action sports should be "mainstream" but with out it, all the companies we love are eventually going to stop growing. I think X-games is going to less of a player in the competion world in the future and competitions are going to be tour based internationally. At least that was the vibe at the action sports conference yesterday.
mainstream = profit = more money to put back.
Maloof money cup plans on actually building skate parks for their competitions in the upcoming years that will remain in place.
X-games is considering going international with the first suggestion being in south africa.

Aside from your complaints on big air for skate. Seeing it in person.... 70 foot ramp to 50 foot gap to massive rail to massive vert. It was INSANE.
Burnquist doing the switch stance on a skateboard at that speed on that rail... it was really amazing and the crowds reaction was nothing to scoff at.

dude you might want to check around, i'm 99% sure danny way has done a tre flip over a very similar jump, maybe you can find it..

oh and, btw.

X games 12. which would be 2006

First hit.. backflip.. so yes eheath.. im not that stoked when a winner of the biggest skateboard competition does a trick that is one of the older mega ramp tricks..

That makes no sense at all, kiwi isn't derogatory at all, and it is used to describe New Zealanders. Fuck you troll

im sorry the adults are talking, please wait at the kiddie table for the other kids who like to throw out unwarranted derogatory comments at others

lol. he called op a dumb fucking kiwi, implying that new zealanders are stupid. which, as ill say again, is very rich coming from an american (no disrespect america, but you do come off pretty fucking stupid most of the time)

I think the fact that skiers have so many more options on jumps than sports like motocross. A double back on skis is done by soooo many kids it isnt as highly praised a trick as something more technical. But in another sport a double on a big as bike is gnarly as shit. Like said above, 10lb skis vs 200lb bike.

However i would love too see a motocross rider try and do a 3. Idk if its possible but it would look sick.
