Summer skiing in europe

Is the flight worth taking going over to ski zermatt, SAAS etc during the summertime? or is no different than going to Mt. Hood?
 
well I imagined it would be a much more cultured experience with a distinct lack of government camp gypsies
 
I've never been to Mt. Hood but I've been to the Stubai Glacier in Austria (I think the actual resort is called the Stubai Zoo) and the actual skiing looked far superior to anything I've seen out of Mt. Hood.
 
Im hitting up L2A for the first time this summer, pretty stoked but I have no idea what the skiing might be like other than a pretty decent park.
 
I would imagine that it would be the same in terms of terrain parks, mediocre public parks and amazing private/summer camp parks. The life of the mountain would be better in europe IMO.
 
There's no such thing as a public/private park- there's only public parks. In general, from what I've seen out of the summer parks in Whis and Hood, the majority of EU glacier parks are better than hood, not as good as Whis (as a generalization).

Not much going on outside the park though- in all cases there'll be a few pistes to ride but you'll be riding park over that for sure. Traditionally Les 2 Alpes and Saas Fee are the better summer parks- I don't know the Austrian parks so well but Hintertux has a great reputation. Tignes glacier is steeper than most others but the park hasn't been that good in the past.
 
I never been to the States, but have been to most glaciers in Europe. To be honest it seems like a long way to go just for summer skiing. However, you could always combine it with some general European exploring, then it's def worth. Hit me up if you wanna know about Austrian glaciers.
 
Dachstein glacier has a pretty awesome summer setup. Stubai will be closed in a few days (at least the park), so I wouldnt go there. Hintertux is always pretty decent. For the overall experience Ive liked dachstein the most though, because there is an awesome camping ground with a lake, volleyball fields and a tramp right at the bottom of the mountain.

I had a great time skiing in Les Deux Alpes one summer, though as someone said, if you're flying all that way, why not go to South America or NZ?

Bear in mind that Dachstein most likely wont be open for longer than late june early july if all goes well.

Ive skied up in Saas Fee and Cervinia (zermatt glacier) in the summer and they are both really fun. Quite a large park with big kickers but you get so many laps in. But you can only ski till like 1 in the afternoon
 
Was in Saas in summer 2011, small park, big features. Shame it closes mid afternoon and is a total ballache to get to in the morning, bubble, bubble, funicular.

Still, fun summer. Also, babes.
 
I'm skiing Les Deux Alpes for the first time this Summer, only going on what I've heard and watched but it a load of friends say it's brilliant. Probably not worth the money when travelling from NA though.

Oh well, there are lots of great late season ski resorts in Europe. Like:

Hintertux, Austria - which is open 365 days a year

Ruka, Lapland, Finland - Open: Until mid-June

Tignes, France - Open: Until mid-May

Passo Tonale, Italy - Open: Until July

Riksgränsen, Sweden - Open: Until June

Zermatt, Switzerland - Open: 365 days

What time you going? Im going to be there in early july with freeskicamp. Pretty stoked! L2A looks sick in all of the videos from the previous years.

Ruka already closed its park few weeks ago, riksgränsen will be open until end of may, then theyll open again mid summer for a week i think.

Theres a few actual summerskiing glaciers in Norway, like the mentioned folgefonna and stryn. In stryn you get to ski backcountry too. Norway is so expensive tough..

That's not true though, as far as i know Kitz has been closing in june at the latest the last couple of years, which would be the beginning of summer.

Not certain on dates yet but it is likely to be 28th June - 5th July, yeah I know I cannot wait!

If you're flying, fly south. However if you're heart is set on Europe, L2A is the way to go. Pros / Cons:

Pro: It's much cheaper than saas fee, the people are super chill and mostly spanish, trampolines everywhere, people tend to party hard at night, Opens almost a month before saas, a lot more jib features.

Cons: super crowded around the opening, skiing ends at 1 (normal, same at saas), afternoons can get super super boring, skatepark is smaller than saas', you're gonna be "locked in the mountains" with no big culutural cities around except for Grenoble (1h away and it sucks anyway), but geneva is only 2h30 away.

That said, i'll be camping out in L2A this summer for sure, always have good time and meet loads of people

Sick dude! How many times have you been? I hope the park will be good this year, theres a ton of snow atm so hopefully we'll get a sick setup!

That's what I heard from a friend who was there last summer in June, either way I think Hintertux seems to be the consensus

Right, Hintertux is open all year but the park isn't. It will close on 20th July 2014.

Right, the Snowpark at the Kitzsteinhorn is already closed and not open during summer.

Important point. Saas Fee is expensive as fuck! Not only the ski pass but also rooms, food etc, everything is EXPENSIVE! And yes, getting up there is really annoying, takes more than 1 hour from the bottom to the actual Snowpark.

No it isn't. I think it depends on the actual snow conditions but it's about end august / beginning of september (so pretty close to open all year). In the second week of September Hintertux opens again with a small jib setup and medium jumps.

Only really good choice in my opinion is L2A. Good park, prices still expensive but not as bad as in switzerland. But I would really recommend you to go to Mt. Hood or southern hemisphere.

Only park I know nothing about here in europe is Folgefonna but from the videos it doesn't look really good (at least compared to Mt. Hood!) plus the weather seems to be very shitty a lot.

I live in south germany (4-5 hours to Saas-Fee) and I prefer going to the indoor slopes during summer like Landgraaf or Bispingen. It's MUCH cheaper, you can sleep all day and shred at the afternoon till the night, the snow conditions are always the same, the weather is predictable BUT it is indoor and not everybody likes that.

Saas opened on july 14th last year. Glacier preservation laws make everyone close during a certain amount of time every year. but they stay open from then all the way to october afterwards, whereas L2A closes early september.

I never go there early july. did once and ended up having to hike the whole time due to the ridiculous amount of people. i'm up there on july 23rd until i run out of money

Does anyone know anything about Dachstein, Stubai or Hintertux? Haven't seen anything about it on here.

Glaciers in europe tend to either be open till june/early july and then shut down till end of sept/beg of oct or shut down late may, reopen beginning of july till beg of sept, and then shut down again till nov or so.

Midsummer you best options are Hintertux (park closed in august, reopens mid sept), Zermatt (park is closed in June and sept i think), Saas fee (totally closed end of april till beg of July) or L2A. I think val thorens or d'isere might have something open in the summer as well

Val Thorens and Val d'Isere are not open, but Tignes, which is in the same lift system as Val d'Isere, is.
