Summer Setup

I have a decent amount of room in my yard but not a ton. I built a drop in using my hot tub as support(I think it's like 3 1/2ish feet in height.) the ramp is decently steep. I want to ski in the summer but I'm not sure what the best way to do this is. How do I build the kicker so I don't lose speed? I've also heard it's good to but about a foot or two of construction fence and then the rest astro turf for speed/edge control is this true? If I absolutely need to I can build the drop in higher but I would much rather put the money into building a nice legit box and a couple of pvc rails(any suggestions for some cool, fun, and good progression rail setups?)

personally, id make it taller if you want to have some decent speed into your rail. How much room do you have to work with? you can just stack pallets for extra height and their really easy to get for free!

my yards like 25ish feet. How much do you think it would cost? The ramp is on the structure thats on the hottub so i could do that with pallets and build a ramp that links on to it kinda? How much slower is astro turf than snow? With the snow stacked up i get more than enough speed but im worried about how it will be in summer.

First off if your using turf the ramp should be at least 6' tall. If you do it right it should cost under $50. Turf is a lot slower, if you really hose it down and use dish soap its pretty fast though.

If i made a box using pvc instead of lexan would it still perform good?

Yes, i've done this and it worked well.

I have some left over plywood so I think I'm going to try and get some pallets and raise it up. Im not really sure how I'll make it a smooth transition from the new addition to the current ramp. where could I get some free or cheap pallets?

If you have a nearby local dump, the wood pile is generally loaded with them and if not just go to like any industrial area and ask if they have extras. I got mine from behind home depot. if you only have 25ft to work with it's gunna be tight. I'm guessing you'll want a 10 foot rail, 12ish foot long in ramp at the least and then the last few feet for landing. try to make your setup a minimum 4ft. As for building onto your old ramp it should be easy, just drill 2x4s on either side of the top of the pallets and attach them to your old down ramp, and then put a sheet of plywood over top. I'd show an example from mine but I'm on mobile so I will in the morning

Thanks, once the snow melts I'll be fixing it. I'll be drawing some plans soon and if i post them could you tell me if you think they will work? Also do you recommend I put fencing over the astro turf or anything?

Ya for sure post your idea! Construction fence really helps speed it up, so just build it with turf and if you have speed issues you can always add it after. Here's pics from mine.

Also sorry for photobomb and I don't know why every pic posted twice?? Ohwell anyways you get the idea. My yards 40ft for reference you you'll just make everythig a bit smaller

I misjudged my yard because it was dark. I think its actually like 35ish feet. I also hace more room into the woods if needed. I was thinking about building the lip on hinges so i can raise it/ lower it as needed. Is that a good idea or will it not work well.

not sure with what you mean about a lip on hinges? it sounds like a cool idea but i dont understand what you could do to make it work. I can make my lip 3" taller by putting in a square block of wood I cut out, and just lying it under the plywood on the lip

i could make it a separate section thats connected somehow with hinges so i can raise and lower it as i need by putting a support under it or something. To secure the astro turf should i staple or screw it in? Sorry for sone many questions. this is my first time doing this so i want to do it good haha.

my turf is just nailed down to plywood, but really as long as its not just lying on it really anything works. if you could design a hinge that would work it could turn out to be pretty sick! i say go for it

What I did was I made the the lip separate from the whole structure, that way in the winter I can move it if I want, and I can easily raise it u by just putting extra wood under the legs. Theres really no need for hinges that would just complicate things.

Should 7 feet be good for my drop in? It shouldn't be too fast or slow right? I'm planning on building a pvc box, double pipe rail(is this a shotgun rail?), and getting one of thos big gree construction pipes should I have these setup higher than the kicker or around the same height or lower? Are these rails all good ideas for progression? What are some other rails I should look into building? Thanks.

7 feet should be perfect, mines 7.5 and i can just clean a 25ft rail with the speed from it. Those rails all sound good, and height of the rail really depends on your skill/comfort level and the tricks youre looking to practice. A lower rail will be less scary to commit to switchups etc, but a higher rail will help you practice urban on and give you more height for spins off. If you wanna be safe just start off low and then if you wanna raise them you can build higher stands for the rails after on. and yea a "double pipe" or double barrel is also called a shotgun. goodluck man and have fun with it! I Just finished building a setup at my friends house this weekend, and honestly building it is half the fun! :)

That looks right! As long as its plasticy and not an actual carpet!

I plan on making it about 8 feet high should that be good? Whats the best angle for the kicker? Should 8 feet give me enough speed to do more jump tricks in the winter (backflip, etc....)? Thanks +k

You aren't going to be able to backflip your summer setup, if you find a way I'll be extremely impressed
