Sumatran rhinoceros on the verge of extinction

I don't know why, but every time I hear about an animal going extinct it deeply saddens me. Especially when most animals that go extinct are usually due to humans killing them faster than they can reproduce.

I'm holing on to hope for them to save this species.

Anyone else hear about this? What do you think will happen? No hope? or is there still hope left?

For sure. It pisses me off the way we view the world and nature. Watching "the national parks" 11 hour ken burns doc again. Pisses me off the way we treat the land and the animals. Let's just kill everything, cut down all the trees, mine and damn everything, so the earth blows for future generations.

Conserve

millions of species have gone extinct over the last few hundred million years without any human help. it is a natural occurrence.

im not saying they should keep killing rhinos, im just pointing it out.

Millions of species have gone extinct naturally, yes, however living in a more bio-diverse world is beneficial to all life. When human's cause even a local extinction, it hurts the entire ecosystem.

In Jackson Hole, farmers spent decades killing off an entire wolf-pack to save more cattle. In turn, elk quickly overpopulated the area, and ate much more grass. They collapsed stream banks by overeating the grass, and the stream water became too dirt filled for the fish population to survive well. This hurt the population of all the fish eaters. Including tourism for fly fishing.

We will never kill all life, but every time we over hunt or destroy food sources, we usually end up hurting ourselves and many other species along the way.

That's stupid. No one wants to be seen as stupid. Except for Australians.

But not even close to the current rate of extinction. Extinction is a normal process but at very slow rate. Humans have accelerated that rate an ungodly amount.

i understand how a simple food chain works.

This. Nature is just like every other process, there's usually some sort of equilibrium that can be reached. Humans are just a big perturbation and we keep fucking everything up.

This just popped up in my news feed today...

Link: http://www.iflscience.com/plants-and-animals/sumatran-rhino-declared-extinct-wild-malaysia

I know, I know it's from IFLS, but it's still some pretty shitty news.

I know this is a different Rhino, but a while back I donated to this(link below) in hopes it helps the black Rhinos.

Not only did I donate, I also paid for advertising for some exposure to help their efforts.

If I remember correctly their endgame was to be able to 3D print Rhino horns and start selling them for cheaper than what it would cost for a genuine Rhino horn.

one time at the zoo when i was younger a rhino started pooping and flicking its tail all around and poop sprayed all over the asians taking pictures of the rhinos

What a classic statement, just like "the earths temperature goes in cycles". If you have taken any basic science course, you'll know that occurrence doesn't mean shit. It's the rate of occurrence everyone is concerned about. And because people don't understand that simple fact, that is why the ignorance continues

youre a piece of shit. you would rather help save a fucking animal that had extremely low numbers before humans started "overhunting it", than help save someones mother with cancer or ALS. Or help save a child starving to death, or living in a refugee camp where drinking water means instant dysentery.

get your fucking head out of your ass.

I donate to multiple things. Why don't you get your head out of your ass and wake the fuck up. Wanna give someone shit for doing something? What have you done lately mr high and mighty? Probably dickall.

There are people who do more than me, but I can pretty much guarantee you aren't one of them.

Let's just put it this way, my tax write off for charitable donations is larger than 4 of your paychecks, easily. And I am only concerned with helping humans survive.

It pisses me off when people would rather help a cute rhino than help someone's mother dieing of cancer, or help a little child starving or shitting thself to death.
