Subaru outback vs audi a4 avant

i have a 2001 suby legacy and i looooove it, and the outback is basically just an upgraded version. I don't know much about the audi, but subarus are sick skiing cars because they are all 4 wheel drive, and the other day i got 28.5 mpg when i filled up (almost all highway driving going +/- 70), so thats pretty amazing for a 4 wheel drive car. Nothing bad to say about subarus yet for me

my buddies got an outback 2.5 gx which is pretty fuckin fly, but other than that i would much rather have an a4. nothing beats a new audi.

i have a 1999 subaru outback and i love it. haven't had one problem with it and like the guy before me said they get surprising amount of mpg.

subee. mine's got over 200K on it and still runs like a fuckin champ. decent gas mileage for awd and audi parts/labor are expensive.

. ive driven a few audi's and they are nasty i drive a vw 1.8t which is the same engienes that went into a4's and its sick

If I had extra money to toss around, the A4 Avant Quattro hands down gets the vote.

But they are expensive to maintain, and are not reliable compared to the Outback.

So if cost of ownership comes into play, the Outback gets the vote.

That said, I've got a '96 Outback that is an absolute champ.

98 outback legacy limited with 135k. Just got out of the shop for a timing belt. The guy said it was in incredible shape and would last another 100k or more.

i drive a 2000 a4 and i love it. the only thing is that its had some problems (nothing major) and it can be pretty expensive to fix/get worked on. other than that it is a great car; its pretty fast, runs really smoothly, has a sick interior and it's comfortable. ive never driven a subaru so i dont know how reliable they are and i cant really compare them. i would go with the audi though.

i also have a 96 legacy outback. really fun to drive, reliable, decent gas mileage, super practical. nothing bad to say about it at all. but if cost was no option for me i'd go with the audi probably. doesn't seem like a fair comparison price wise though. both excellent vehicles.

my friends mom has the a6 2.7 avant and she said its fun to drive but wicked expensive 2 fix.. what engine would you get w/ the sub outback.. im splitting it w/ my parents soo i dk i want something fast, handles well, good mpg and good in snow?

I have a '97 Subaru Legacy. It's my fourth Suby. Such reliable cars, really. And there are so many Suby owners on here, why are you not in the Subaru cult? PM me :)

Subarus are sick until you blow a head gasket in bum fuck wyoming, while driving across country...

i'd definetly go with the a4. I've got an S4 right now and I love it. the "s" is better than the "a" so you might want to consider that also, its a little more expensive but its worth it in the long run. They are a great snow car and, you get a roof rack (even on the avant) you can use it for sleeping or even but subs in the back and still have plenty of room.

i'm actually looking into both too of these cars too, except instead of a legacy i'm looking more into an impreza rs wagon.

i had an allroad, i loved it, it was fast and so nice inside, but thank god it was under warrenty, because i found out even though it had been certified by audi, it had been in a wreck before and had lots of problems.

i love love love the new a4 avants, or an s4 avant. i saw an rs4 today and if i had unlimited amounts of money, i would get that instantly. but um, yeah...if money isn't an issue, get an avant, if it is, go with a subaru.

Can you clarify if its the IMPREZA outback or the LEGACY outback?

I've got an impreza outback sport, a bit slow but maneuverable as hell. Especially with an aftermarket swaybar.

Go Japanese. Reliable and cheap to fix.

The Subaru is going to be a whole hell of a lot better and has more room but if you are going for style I think the A4 looks better...all and all i would say the Subaru...more functional

Ihsve a subaru outback 02 model with 172,000 miles on it and it still runs great. The head gasket blows at about a 100 thousand on almost all subarus and they run reat after that. Id go with the subaru and to the first post subarus are AWD not 4 wheel there is a difference. Look it up. If they were 4wd they would get alot worse MPG

A buddy of min e has an a4 wagon. Doesn't fit a whole lot of stuff. Plus there's no leg space when someone normal size is in the front. So long rides with lots of gear are really really cramped. I gets clusterphobic. Id get an older a6 wagon instead, huuuuge car!

And better quality and cheaper parts.

Sorry never driven a Sub

And yes, the Audi styling is better, but my '96 Legacy Outback has heated seats, heated mirrors and heated windshield washer fluid nozzles. Has all the comfort features of an Audi, but with cloth seats and a more utility look to it. I average 30 mpg, and even on shitty ass tires it still corners and handles like a champ.

I wouldn't trade it for a status symbol, problem-laden Audi.

just go with the subaru, its so much more practical and youw ill have way more money to spend on other schwag like new skis and such

I have a 99 Outback (auto). Two friends have a 03 Outback (stick) and a 06 Outback (stick).

My mom has a 04 A4 Avant 3.0 (6 cylinder).

After driving them all, god damn do I love the Audi. The new subies with XT are sweet, but if you are getting a 3.0 avant, it just feels so much powerful.

New subarus are nicer inside, but again, cannot compete with the audi.

The subaru are bigger though, so if space is an issue, maybe go with the subaru or look for a A6.

If I had the choice, I would get the A4 in a second. They are just that much nicer.

The new subaru are pretty nice though, and they are a lot cheaper on gas and labor. So...if you can afford it, get the audi. if you are like most people on NS, I would say in the long run the outback would be cheaper and last longer.

O. And if you get an audi, look for one coming off a lease at around 25,000 miles. Sell it @ 75,000, no questions asked, when the warranty runs out. Keeping an audi above 75,000 miles is just stupid IMO.

My friend had a 99.5 A4 sedan. Such a hot car, but the thing was a money pit. It tore thru wheel bearings like it was it's business. Timing belt maintenence is very labor intensive and very costly for a shop to do, and it NEEDS to be done on schedule. (interference motor - you snap your belt, your motor is toast) He had his coilpacks for his ignition go, stranding him on the highway, and they were $300-$400 to replace.

All this was under 100k too.

Beautiful cars if you have the cash, and a fair amount set aside for repairs. But if you want a reliable daily that is quite nice and much more economic, the Legacy is a solid choice.

Have a 98 Outback Legacy with 106,000 on it. Put 25,000 in two years, never had any kind of maintenace problems, room for 5 plus gear (with a rack), ok mileage (22-25 mpg), handles really well, dominates the snow. What more could you want for a less expensive car. Only complaint is the power, but a manual would help that out a lot. I'm definaltey a subie man, haha

man, get a bmw 325 xit.   so sick.    i've driven all three of these cars and the bmw is so far ahead of the others it's crazy.
