Style vs. Progression

Lately I have been thinking a lot about skiing and just wanted to see what everybody's views on the subject. So what do you think is better for skiing: styling the shit out of everything or progressing the sport to higher levels? Or do you feel that style is progession? Or do you think with everybody constantly focusing on being 'stylie', new tricks are becoming fewer and fewer? Has skiing reached the point, where there isn't much more to invent/create, so we now our focus has shifted to refinement aka style?

^ thats what i was just guna say, throwing the slowest smoothest trick is the new thing, it looks the best and its a sweet style

I totally believe that too, but I guess the point I have been trying to get at is do you think focusing strictly on looking good/having style has distracted skiers from being creative and inventing new tricks? And is this a bad thing, good thing or what?

i see what your saying but i think skiers originality is leading them towards style, like take tanners no grab cork 3, i would definitly say thats style and hes progressing a shit load by being able to do something like that

its my opinion that these either or questions simply dont work. you cant say style is progression or it isnt... style does progress the sport, but so do new tricks and creative lines and jibs.

ya i think some people are gettin to into styling out their moves...like dash longe for ex. his style is sooo smooth but all u see him do are 360s and 540's and it gets boring...i like to see the huck every once and a while cuz they're fun to watch as well

what he said ^^ ,

haha, but seriously. Style IS progression, but then that becomes problematic because style is such a relative thing. Is your idea of good style super tweaked-out graps held to the last minute, or no-grabs with as little movement as possible? - they are both 'styles'.

Progression as defined by 'inventing new stuff' is slowing down now because there is not much left to invent. Yes we still have to spin stuff the other way - and that is a definate technical progression, but new stuff is fewer and far between.

Variations now will be with switching evrything up, and more tech grinds.

All this stuff happens in stages anyway. Snowboarding had slowed down for a while focused on smoothness of style, and now JP Walker throws down a double cork, and dudes are spinning 1440 in the pipe in Comps !! Its in the next transition phase.

well i personally think taht everybody is focusing a little too much on style. if new tricks are invented, they will be styled out in no time

i think that they are the similar but different. You are only slightly progressing your abilities when all you focus on is tweaking your tricks. Look at my hero Turpin vs Descheneux. Turpin is out there inventin all new grabs(want proof, check out versys), but Descheneux has more style, however doesnt do anything new. A new point to bring up is perhaps whats different is the way how he progresses through style. So i just almost proved my point wrong, you get the picture tho.

there will start to be a split happeneing. kinda already is with pollard and the line team. Anyway companies will start looking for skiers that are stylie as hell that will do cork 5 opposite mutes and make it look insanely easy and sweet, and then nutcases that try switch bio 1260 blunts over a 105 road gap...both will have their spots on the same teams...

i'm serious about the whole oakley vs non-oakley thing tho. I mean look at the oakley people, with the exception of fujas, none of them is really considered a stylie. Look at pollard, sprang, larose, belan, neither of them are sponsored by oakley.

I agree on both points. I've seen over 36 hours of footage from the best riders in the world this year. Most pro's will stay the route of style rather than difficult moves. Why? Because Thay would rather progress their own style. That's fine but I can't say those guys are progressing the industry. Tanner,Pep, and a few others have set a new standard for the industry and beat themselves up doing it. Turpin did some stuff that blew my mind this season. Some riders went for huge jumps like Jon and some riders like Anthony went for un-natural moves. I don't even know where I'm going with this so?? Anyway, I would say Progression is a combination of good style incorporating NEW or difficult moves. Just so we are clear, what I'm trying to say is that T's 360 was insane. Tanner up the ante for style with out question. I can do a 360, but I can never make it look like T's. That's the ultimate progression in style. But the ultimate progression of the sport still lies with new or difficult tricks in combination with difficult situations (ie. a 360 with great style of a big cliff in the middle of a AK line-CR, a difficult flip trick in the backcountry off a large step down-T/Pep/Mick, the best sw ten eighty to date in the park-Dave C., serious rails w/ good style-Liam,or some unknown kid creating a new grab in combination with some techy trick in a park somewhere.)

Just my thoughts

we have to have huge tricks. Theyre what make skiing interesting. Every year I watch ski movies and can't wait to see what crazy new thing they've done. It's not all tricks either. It could be the way they hit the jumps or different kinds of jumps.
