I would go with oliver twist, because that was a decent book at least.
If this isn't for some academic thing, then read something by james rollins. He is amazing.

oliver twist is quite good if you like dickens

however, a lot of people have said that the painted vail is an extremely good book, i'm yet to read it myself though
