Stupid fear of metal rails

So I always have had this unconscious dear of metal rails for no reason so I have mainly stuck with plasticfattys that thankfully my hill has. I have the image of all metal rails being sticky and my edges cathcing although I have de tuned my skis. I have hit couple of flat rails but always after hyping myself up atleast few runs.

Can someone say a few words of wisdom about this problem or do I just have to hit them in hopes of not eating shit?

just huck your meat.

in all seriousness this is the advice that get thrown in every rail thread, and it is the advice that helped me the most with getting over the fear of just trying.

Once you start riding rails, you’ll realize you prefer metal over plastic. It slides better end and is usually more predictable

the metal hurts no less or more than the plastic

I would say metal does hurt more, but you come to find out most of the pain from rail skiing is just mental. Most of the time, falling off a rail you still just land on your skis and dont actually fall.

This. Metal is way mote predictable and it doesn't deflect like plastic. I had a skinny pvc tube that would bend and if you weren't ready for it, your edges would catch every time. Also when you catch your edge on metal, it doesn't dig in as much as plastic so the jerk motion doesn't hurt as much either.

I suck at computering so I don’t know how to quote the dude above me but he hit it right on the head. Rails you usually don’t fall on the rail if your off, you just kinda slip off one way or the other and keep it rolling.

I just started hitting rails this year literally just fuckin send it and you will realize how irrational the fear is. Thats what worked for me at least.

I had literally the same thing going on with me, I mightve even made a thread I don't remember. Once you hop onto one, even just barely going super slow, youl realize it's not to much different. Spray with Pam to

So since this post I have been hitting some flats, dfd's and downward donkey dicks and they have been going great. Althought I have a guestion regarding the stickyness of handrails in some weather conditions, are they stickier on sertain weather? Yesterday I almost ate shit the whole day hitting the same flat hand rail that slid like butter the day before that. The rail ate my edges like they were breakfest.

i wish i could love pvc but it slides like shit. go hit that metal rail brother, godspeed

Yeah I am just the opposite, I love fat pvc tubes they slide perfect every time. Just questioning why metal handrails sometimes slide like butter and sometimes not at all.

does your hill have boxes with metal tubing on the sides?

id say to get used to the resistance of steel, hit the boxes so that your edges are grinding the metal on the sides. you should be able to "lock in" on the metal with your heel on the downhill ski going regular, or toe going lip on.

when you step up to the full metal rail, try to find one that is particularily short, wide and low to the ground. i think its easier to get a feel for wide tubes than it is to get a feel for flat bars or shotgun pipes.

and go slow. who cares if you straddle?

Used to have the same fear, the ghought of even hitting a rail made me piss myself. The way i got out if it was skiing with some older guys and make them push me to do it. I also started pushing myself and always hitting all the rails within the first coiple laps

You just need some better PVC, the "blue brute" PVC is gas. but yes metal is still better

You should work your way up to them. Try iced up 2x4s they are a good in-between.

That's how I learnt, a nice iced up 2x4 is how I got over my fear of metal. You should try it.

hit rails for a few years, get a little older, and then it will be boxes that sketch you out.

Real words of wisdom :

if your afraid of edges catching then you’re not moving as a unit. Even if I took a knife to that sharp rail and grinded if it’s not going to get caught up cause I just keep following through with my arm. - the same is true with your skis - when you have enough SPEED even if the rail is sticky and your applying a CONSTANT force to your feet you will keep going. You need to be pushing against the rail almost when you’re front it.

in short speed is your friend and don’t be afraid to push against the rail make that rail you’re bitch
